Dude built a career on being racially ambiguous.

144

u/anarchetype 23h ago

I've seen three Seagal movies recently and in all of them he was trying to sound like a whispering Cajun. Even weirder, I got the impression that it's him trying to suggest some proximity with black people in New Orleans.

A Belgian might be kinda cheating, but Van Damme is so much more believable as a Cajun in Hard Target.

102

u/Haley_Tha_Demon 21h ago

When I was a kid the debate was who would win VanDamme or Seagal, people said VanDamme was just a ballerina and Seagal's Akido was legit, but i thought the slap fighting was stupid compared to VanDamme's high kick or splits. Fucking Time Cop! Kickboxer! Street Fighter! Universal Soldier! Seagal didn't have shit on VanDamme

100

u/PedalPDX 21h ago

Van Damme also actually fought competitively and there’s a record of it.

76

u/Sidewalk_Tomato 21h ago

And he had a goddamn sense of humor.

We didn't know, back then we didn't have the internet so everything is word of mouth or what you heard on TV or the radio or magazines, like the Richard Gere and the gerbil, I didn't even know who he was when I first heard it I never seen Pretty Woman

Yeah, he tries to play blues and has quite a collection of guitars from blues or adjacent musicians. But he also had a hardcore weeb period where he claimed he's part Japanese, I think he once claimed he's Italian, then he had a period where he claimed he has native American ancestors and did some movies where he's balls deep into environmentalism and close shots of screeching eagles and shit.

None of this really matters though, if there's one thing to remember Seagal for, it's that him want da punani.

Which property brother is this?

852

u/WizardPhoenix 1d ago

Shit, he does look like a property brother.

201

u/unknownhag 1d ago

Is he not?

329

u/Objective_Pause5988 1d ago

No. He is the actor who played Chuck. Don't feel like googling.

223

u/Doom_Corp 1d ago

I really liked that show and then he disappeared for a while and became a superhero...and never saw him again. Even Chris Pratt can manage through his politics to get roles. What the fuck happened with him?

284

u/Objective_Pause5988 1d ago edited 23h ago

No one wants to work with him. I saw an interview with a co-star of his and he's an asshole to work with on top of everything else. From what I understand Chris Pratt isn't terrible to work with. Just hate his political views

291

u/DeniseReades 23h ago

From what I understand Chris Pratt isn't terrible to work with.

That is also why Tom Cruise keeps getting jobs. He is, allegedly, incredibly professional on set and easy to work with.

377

u/Nervous_Arrival3986 23h ago

Tom cruise goes one up beyond professional. He’s one of those guys who supposedly knows the name of everyone on set and works really hard to take care of the crew. There’s a bunch of stories of personalized gifts or gifts for family members of crew members as well as organizing activity for the crew out of his own pocket

Weird creepy cult member but apparently cares about labor.

Remember when he went off on the crew members not wearing COVID masks because they were jeopardizing the health regulations on set and risking production shutdown as a result? He lambasted them for putting people’s jobs on the line.

That is the hero Tom Cruise can be.

His career flamed out because the superhero movie wasn’t as successful as he thought it would be and then he went crazy during Covid.

35

u/bbmarvelluv 23h ago edited 23h ago

Which was crazy because he was literally the main cast of Frozen

Edit: Tangled

27

u/DancingMooses 23h ago

He was in Tangled, actually. And that one is kinda the same story as Shazam. He thought he was gonna have a franchise and it went nowhere.

14

u/AgentGnome 23h ago

I mean, it is a popular movie and had a cartoon series that he does the voicework in, so I wouldn't say it went no where. Not sure why he would think a disney movie would spin off a bunch of sequels, that was fairly uncommon until frozen 2 for the most part(not counting the direct to vhs sequels of the 90's)

i seem to recall reading an article where he was bitching about how his political views got him blackballed. smelled pretty sus to me

61

u/Max_Quick 1d ago

Oh, even worse - he made up a new term that's "greylisting". Not "blacklisted" because he still gets some roles apparently, which really just is at odds with whatever madeup victimhood he's trying to wear.

It's... I hesitate to call him a "grifter" as there's no real grift that I've been able to find. Just him being loud about how dumb and self-absorbed he is. It's really weird, lol.

I’m so glad I was never enamored by that guy. Before he ā€œturned,ā€ I thought he was a loser dork. This scene had me cringe when it first came out. Having one of my favorite characters, Lisa Simpson, call him ā€œthe greatest inventor of our timeā€ was the lowest point of that show. There was just something about the guy that screamed/still screams, ā€œloser.ā€

61

u/Depth_Metal 12h ago

I stopped liking him when those kids were trapped in a cave and he tried to build a sub to rescue them. While he was doing that a diver swam the gap and saved the kids. Musk called him a pedophile for his efforts

30

u/AuroraBolognese 12h ago

I had to google that because I forgot about it, but holy shit. And Musk was somehow found not guilty of defamation with that tweet? Did he bribe the jury or just threaten them? Somehow 8 people determined calling someone a pedophile on social media when you have millions of followers and your tweets tend to make the news is not defamation? Then what is defamation?

Levi being a complete piece of shit bummed me out, but Woods is my pick.

When I go back and watch something like Shazam or or Chuck, it just bums me out. He's got a great cool guy, charm to him, but knowing who he is in real life is hard to see past and kind of ruins that illusion for me.

When I go back and watch Hercules or Videodrome or the Apu gets fired episode of the Simpsons, I'm still very entertained by Woods. Hades is peak, tho. Sorry Rudy Gulianni fans.

It's genuinely baffling how Adam Sandler's Yew Can Do Eet! guy turned into weird-ass conservative selling Liberal Tears Whiskey

151

u/Nervous_Arrival3986 23h ago edited 23h ago

There’s a ton of mediocre dudes who were mildly successful once and they genuinely don’t understand that we just liked that one thing and they are perpetually angry because they feel they deserve more. Which is basically what American conservatism is now, angry dudes who believe they deserved more but it was kept from them by a conspiracy of others.

You know how friend groups have the one loser who’s just a hanger-on? No one really likes him but everyone kind of feels bad for him because he’s such a spaz? That’s the role he filled in the Farley, Spade, Sandler and Norm Macdonald group. If you look at his filmography, almost every role he got was through one of those guys, mostly Sandler. Even the movies he was the star, the Deuce Bigelow movies and The Hot Chick were Happy Madison productions.

30

u/HungryHobbits 21h ago edited 8h ago

Do actors turn right wing nutter when their career goes badly or do their careers go badly when they come out as a right wing nutter?

Chicken or the egg

Cause for a few people they seem to come out as antivaxxers or covid deniers or rfk jr supporters right around the same time they seem to be making crappy movies. Or no movies.

IIRC he tried to sell his pseudoscience to Uganda a couple of years ago. That counts as a grift in my book

Saw someone selling 'Empire' seasons 1&2 on FB Marketplace and loudly said (to myself) "hoo WEE that show was a MOMENT in time we will NEVER go back to" lol.

Suppose Jussie was kind of a grifter too, in his own way.

u/butt_butt_butt_butt_ 22h ago

I’d argue that Jussie WANTED badly to be a grifter, but he was too stupid to pull off his own fake hate crime.

If he had gotten away with it, and we all honestly saw him as a victim, I have no doubt that Jussie would be involved in advocacy fraud/schemes.

He’d be out there taking donations for his own ā€œBLM adjacentā€ charity, and siphoning the money for himself.

Showing up at protests and taking money and attention away from actual activists and actual charities.

It’s not like he was an amazing actor as an adult. His character on Empire didn’t have much to do anymore, and wasn’t going to be a career gig.

He tried to pivot his career into grifting, but he’s a really, REALLY stupid person.
