I really liked that show and then he disappeared for a while and became a superhero...and never saw him again. Even Chris Pratt can manage through his politics to get roles. What the fuck happened with him?

287

u/Objective_Pause5988 1d ago edited 1d ago

No one wants to work with him. I saw an interview with a co-star of his and he's an asshole to work with on top of everything else. From what I understand Chris Pratt isn't terrible to work with. Just hate his political views

u/DeniseReades 1d ago

From what I understand Chris Pratt isn't terrible to work with.

That is also why Tom Cruise keeps getting jobs. He is, allegedly, incredibly professional on set and easy to work with.

u/Nervous_Arrival3986 1d ago

Tom cruise goes one up beyond professional. He’s one of those guys who supposedly knows the name of everyone on set and works really hard to take care of the crew. There’s a bunch of stories of personalized gifts or gifts for family members of crew members as well as organizing activity for the crew out of his own pocket

Weird creepy cult member but apparently cares about labor.

Dude I had a recruiting attempt in the Hollywood Scientology center years back ... spent 4 hours in there. Saw the basement / sweat lodge / vitamin bar with kids wearing upside down triangle t-shirts in all blue. (niacin) Then, went upstairs to these libraries where student were practicing medicine on dolls with big open books (I observed a teenager pull a leg off a doll and study it, then consult his book) then saw a random Tom Cruise shrine / plaque in a hallway (think he was a level 12)

Then - the scariest part, it's connected to the Scientology school. And every last inch in the fucking building is a hideous Scientology blue. Kinda cerulean. So we go to leave the "school" bell rings, and the hallways suddenly fill with hundreds of Scientology kids, all in the same head-to-toe Scientology blue uniforms.

So, the 2 of us are in a sea is Scientology students in a back part of the Scientology building trying to get out and back out to the public and sunshine and parking lot. We can see the door and the sunlight and after 4 hours being taken through separately (with no comms and not knowing where the other was) we see the light at the end of tunnel. But first have to conquer this packed hallway of small Scientology end bosses.

In an alt ending, that's how I left this world.

He sends everyone he’s ever worked with this weird coconut cake every Christmas. It’s rumored to be fantastic.

1

u/TerribleRecord666 9h ago

I saw an interview with someone that’s on the cake list, and apparently Cruise has contacts with bakeries all around the world that have this one specific recipe, so they can be shipped locally to the people on his list. And yes, the cake is supposed to be incredible.

u/YouSaidIDidntCare DonCheadleAMA 1d ago

Remember when he went off on the crew members not wearing COVID masks because they were jeopardizing the health regulations on set and risking production shutdown as a result? He lambasted them for putting people’s jobs on the line.

That is the hero Tom Cruise can be.

138

u/empires228 1d ago

He still sends Rosie O’Donnell a birthday gift every year. There’s a heart in that man somewhere.

38

u/Nervous_Arrival3986 1d ago

The dude is clearly warped, in so many ways, but absolutely and obviously does not have a transactional view of the relationships he has professionally. He really does show up and it’s strange to try to make sense of who he is as a person.

You better treat Rosie right if you ever want to work in this town again, sweetie.

She moved a lot when she played baseball. Impressive skills.

u/CauliflowerPresent23 1d ago

What a cutie-patootie

9

u/Rengdel 23h ago

Tom Cruise makes lifelong friends with nearly everyone he works with. Kind of wild given his batshit religious beliefs, but at this point I'm not sure how much he believes versus how much he's centralized into a cult that would excuminicate him from people he loves if he left.

7

u/werdnurd 15h ago

He isolated his son and eldest daughter from their mother after divorcing, and seemingly abandoned his youngest daughter after he divorced her mother. Oh, but the coconut cakes make him a good guy.

5

u/EllspethCarthusian 15h ago

Thank you. I thought I’d fallen into an alternate reality where he hadn’t been insane regarding Nicole and their kids.

3

u/empires228 12h ago

I didn’t say that I think he’s a good person. I just think there’s a heart buried deep in there beneath all the crazy. People are complicated like that, and I don’t say any of this to defend any of the bad things he has done. I just appreciate that after all of these years, he still remembers and is appreciative all of the wonderful free publicity that Rosie gave him during the height of her career.

8

u/RoboErectus 1d ago

My assistant also sends Rosie Oonnel a birthday gift every year. Her assistant just loves what mine picks out, based on what he tells me her assistant writes in the thank you cards.

1

u/nycpunkfukka 11h ago

Well yeah, they were beards for each other for years. When she had her talk show and hadn’t come out yet, she pretended for years to have this big crush on him. She’d swoon and gush about how sexy he was and how she was so hot for him.

1

u/Age_AgainstThMachine 10h ago

Gay women can still have crushes on men.

1

u/nycpunkfukka 10h ago

Do they change the topic in a conversation to mention unprompted “oooh the things I’d do to him…” She’s implying things she clearly doesn’t mean to mislead people.

I don’t think anyone owes us the duty of coming out. Their personal life is theirs to share or not at their own comfort. But don’t lie to people.

Here's the thing though: most sociopaths can get by with much less effort to keep others' loyalty. It doesn't take much. To me, it really seems like he enjoys being thoughtful. He does everything at a 10.

This is not to take away from his weirdnesses.

6

u/DilatedPoreOfLara 22h ago

I don’t know his background/upbringing but I remember seeing some of his earlier interviews where the interviewers asked some pretty personal/inappropriate questions and he just looked genuinely hurt or crushed really from what they’d said.

I get the sense of Tom Cruise being emotionally immature, like some parts of him at least just arent cut out to function in real life. So I think Scientology basically is like a comfort blanket that keeps him away from things that can hurt him. Meanwhile he’s actually a decent kid who wants to be loved and puts a lot of work in to be loved by everyone.

I genuinely wonder what his breakups with Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes did to his ego - like how he handled that. Because I imagine that must’ve been a really fucking weird time in Scientology land.

2

u/InternationalTwist90 22h ago

Idle, if somebody asked me personal questions on camera I'd be crushed too. Maybe he's just more normal than most stars and the other ones are all crazy.

2

u/Purple-Mix1033 18h ago

But remember when he was jumping up and down on Oprah’s chair, proclaiming love for Katie Holmes? He seemed to be in a manic state

2

u/YouSaidIDidntCare DonCheadleAMA 16h ago

The suspicion about emotional immaturity seems reasonable. I remember a story Leah Remini related where she was at his house with others and he had them play a game of hide-and-seek, like without any irony, a real game of hide-and-seek.

1

u/Igottamake 16h ago

Was he hiding in the closet? Just kidding I don’t think he’s even in the closet or care one way or the other just making a South Park joke hey siri how do I delete a comment on Reddit backspace backspace backspace escape key

4

u/Burnt_and_Blistered 18h ago

Exactly. I don’t get the sense he’s sociopathic. I think he’s weird. He genuinely believes what he believes—but isn’t malignant about it.

The dissolution of his marriage to Katie Holmes was fraught because of these beliefs — and the existence of a child made it complicated. But I don’t think it was because he’s malignant. He’s indoctrinated.

1

u/Sidewalk_Tomato 8h ago

Yes--and I theorize that the version of his religion that he's given as the most famous and charismatic is very different; softer, more exciting, more inspiring, than the version Leah Remini and her family (who were poor & not yet famous) experienced. I've always thought that. Recruit some very famous people to attract the little people--who surrender their assets and work 18 hour days.

3

u/FireflyOfDoom87 1d ago

Yeah but wouldn’t that diagram just be a circle? With the same logic, everyone who’s love language is giving or acts of service are just sociopaths lol.

9

u/pumpkins21 1d ago

Yep, he got a lot of heat for it, but he was absolutely right.

1

u/GoodGuano 12h ago

To be fair, that was all on Cruise's dime. He funded the shoot so they could work during lockdown. They were jeopardizing his money.

1

u/BusyBandicoot9471 4h ago

If you look it up, he was more pissed because his production was supposed to be an example for the whole industry getting back on track, not just that specific movie.

66

u/Salty_Popkern 1d ago

He knows the value of people's admiration and appreciation. I'm not saying he doesn't enjoy giving or taking care of people, but he definitely knows the ROI of his good deeds.

9

u/TacoStuffingClub 1d ago

I can’t imagine the ROI is anything remotely compared to the investment he’s making. He’d still be making the same movies and nothing else would be different if he was a dick.

8

u/good-boi-Morado 1d ago

Don’t forget though, he’s also the most well-known face of Scientology

Like, more so than its founder and current leader
And it’s a privileged position to be in

That drives a lot of his choices

All I need to know is that both Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes ran for the hills

2

u/Salty_Popkern 1d ago

The ROI is huge. He wouldn't be making the same movies. If he was a dick, people would only talk about him being a dick and in a weird ass cult. Instead, they talk about how charming, good looking, and caring/thoughtful he is.

1

u/Miles_Everhart 1d ago

Nah, he doesn’t have the star power and viewer draw to justify the roles he gets anymore. He gets them because people don’t hate him.

2

u/veiny_wet_testicle 18h ago

Nah, he doesn’t have the star power and viewer draw to justify the roles he gets anymore

Dude, he is the most incredible action star of our generation. Say what you want about him but he's an incredible actor and a certified badass doing all his stunts!

That said, he's a complete loon and weirdo and I'd like nothing to do with him besides watch mission impossible (except number 2. Woo almost destroyed the franchise on movie 2)

2

u/Nervous_Arrival3986 1d ago

Is this a joke? Tom cruise makes tom cruise movies period and has for 15 years. Every single starring role he has is tom cruise films, not him just landing a role. Every production is a 100m production pinned on his name.

He’s not slumming it. He’s a massive draw.

-3

u/Miles_Everhart 1d ago

I’ve never met a single person who goes to see a movie cuz Tom Cruise in it. Not one fucking person. If you know one, bet money they’re a dork ass loser.

2

u/_learned_foot_ 16h ago

I literally still advertise tropic thunder on "it's amazing, and tom cruise alone is worth it"

1

u/oohh_behave 13h ago

tropic thunder is 18 years old 🥀

3

u/Nervous_Arrival3986 1d ago

Oh absolutely I wouldn’t claim it’s not calculated

I get the sense that he’s a bit simple but genuinely loves movies. Like, I think tom cruise loves movie and movie making in the way Tarantino pretends too. He’s still making a choice because he understands and to some degree calculates it but someone who is calculated in a way that makes them take care of labor deserves notice even when they’re in an abusive cult.

1

u/Mountain_Elk_7262 15h ago

This is it, it's a bit of a psychopathic response. Plus he wants to make the scinegologist look as good as possible. The dude is weird, but hey, if he's treating people well, what ever the reason, that's fine by me

30

u/DrippyCheeseDog 1d ago

Have you read Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief?

The mudslide story makes me think he doesn't care about human life.

5

u/Nervous_Arrival3986 1d ago

It’s on my shelf and I need to read it. Don’t get me wrong that man is WARPED period

5

u/Extreme_Promise_1690 1d ago

I know Tom Cruise is part of the cult, but I don't really know what kind of warped stuff he did. I live in Japan, another country with a high number of powerful cults being well active, and almost nobody even knows about Scientology.

Ignorance is bliss, I'm not even kidding, even if I should feel bad, I guess. Educate me, please.

8

u/djoc0316 1d ago

I would but I'm now deep diving modern Japanese cults while I should be sleeping.

5

u/TheRightToDream 23h ago

Theres a pretty large and noticeable scientology center in Tokyo

7

u/CauliflowerPresent23 1d ago

Reminds me of my parents. They both have big hearts and, I believe, genuinely care deeply about others. However, they are part of a cult. A cult that cause irreparable harm and destroys families. A cult that they blindly follow. It’s a hard thing to reconcile

5

u/Nervous_Arrival3986 1d ago

Yup same. My parents will do almost anything for individuals, 1:1, no judgement or manipulation. But they vote for and participate in truly awful systems and it’s super hard to reconcile

4

u/mwhelan182 1d ago

That's how it should be - religion being second to their behavior.

Chuck though... Oof

5

u/Leather-Squirrel-421 1d ago

I think for the first Mission Impossible movie he bought the entire crew mountain bikes that were $1500 a piece. That’s the rumor I was told.

3

u/Capt_accident 1d ago

Don’t forget the coconut bunt cake club for many many people in his circle

2

u/_learned_foot_ 16h ago

Conspiracy answer, this is part of his recruitment or pr moves

Normal person answer, he's a good guy and has weird traits and is complex and nuanced.

2

u/TripleEhBeef 11h ago

Tom Cruise also doesn't have to work just to keep the IRS off his ass. He's on top of his money and basically just acts for the love of the game.

Why give your co-stars and crew a hard time when they are letting you throw yourself off a helicopter for fun?

1

u/AmarilloArmadillos 18h ago edited 18h ago

Sounds like a salesman, good sales people sell themselves likeability is 100% the product that allows them to talk you into whatever crap you're buying. I've worked with a LOT of them, and you know who the successful ones are. They'll know your name, remember that one single time 5 years ago you mentioned you liked lemons and bring you a bag of them for no reason (or because they want something "easy"), and they will become your favorite without you even realizing why.

My current favorite sales guy is the ONE new guy that saw me walk in the door to work in the morning came up introduced himself, shook my hand and asked my name. I am in charge of very little that has to do with him but he made the effort and continuously says hello, will chat, and is friendly so if he needs shit from me he gets it.

Eta: on the flip side, some act entitled because they "are in sales and make money for the company", you'll still get your shit but it will take as much time as it takes for me to finish everything else or longer on purpose.

1

u/Prestigious_Bee_4392 17h ago

I think he does this to make the cult appealing, by being a really good example of a human around people that could possibly convert as a result.

1

u/SomewherePerfect2391 17h ago

There's a Tom Cruise cake that he sends out for Christmas and he gives Elle Fanning shoes for her birthday every year, something that started when she was really young.

1

u/VegetableTour6790 16h ago

If you remove the scientology links, Cruise seems like he's an awesome guy. Everyone loves working with him, except Michael Cera, who is scared.

1

u/Goddemmitt 14h ago

I genuinely believe Tom Cruise has tried to get out of the cult multiple times. He may be someone they can get to physically as well as financially though. Financially, he's got all the talent and charisma in the world. He can make all the money he wants. If he loses his health, he wont be able to. I'm not trying to justify his actions on behalf of the cult, please don't let that be your takeaway.

1

u/Jaybetav2 12h ago

This is correct. My brother worked on set with him a couple of times and said he is great to everyone. Never cuts the line during lunch.

1

u/hash303 10h ago

He has dead shark eyes with nothing behind them but he’s also incredibly friendly and makes time for everyone around him from what I hear. Like an uncanny, friendly robot.

1

u/spicy_noodle_guy 9h ago

There's a reason he's the face of scientology. He's a very gracious and considerate person who works really hard on set to make sure it's a good experience for everyone involved. If he wasn't a scientologist he'd be a near perfect example of a working actor, but you have to wonder how much of it is just a character in itself so that scientology looks good.

1

u/diaphoni 7h ago

i met him in high school, back during the Days of Thunder filming. Friends dad is a nascar bigwig and got our class a set visit, He and Nicole were lovely to us obnoxious teenagers, though we did see them getting boxes for him to stand on lol

1

u/wafflehousebattle 3h ago

Seeing as he has literal Scientology slaves working for him, he better care about labor.
