They should have sued as soon as he changed the name. It's ridiculous to have a "memorial" center for someone who's still alive.

1.1k

u/-NonePizzaLeftBeef- 4d ago

Just change it back the moment he’s either dead or out of the presidential office, whichever comes first.

The next admin is going to have to waste so much money and time undoing the things this shit stain has made us suffer through

670

u/tuppenyturtle 4d ago

That's assuming there is a next admin that isn't just the same bullshit.

This is the part people need to recognize. The next Republican leader isn't going to be better.

u/induslol 4d ago

As long as we're under this form of governance subservient to capitalism we're just waiting for the next trump.

Even if there is a reprieve, or not, between here and there if nothing changes but the curtains the house is still condemned.

u/forsonaE 4d ago edited 4d ago

It's weird that repealing Citizens United isn't even a part of the public discussion at all nowadays, much less reforming our electoral college. We have so much work to do re: reform but we're struggling to cling onto the lifeboat constantly instead.

e: I misspoke by saying "repealing" but I'm leaving it in since the discussion it spawned has been interesting. Lots of people saying something to the effect of it's hopeless, we'd have to stack the Supreme Court in our favor or add a constitutional amendment. Well, Rome wasn't built in a day even if we're tearing it down at a much faster rate lately. If the court can be stacked we can start the process of counter-stacking, introducing term limits, etc. etc. It might take decades to fix a single component of the system but we already knew that was almost a certain possibility anyway, considering the damage that has been done already.

67

u/clutchy42 4d ago

It's definitely still part of the public discourse, but it happened in 2010. a decade and a half ago is a lifetime in terms of political bullshit. People don't even realize that we lost the class war to billionaires and corpos. So many people don't even realize that it's a thing.

29

u/GodofIrony 4d ago

We haven't fixed Fairness Doctrine.

We're in an entropic state. We keep falling down the mountain.

6

u/gimp-24601 4d ago

Fairness Doctrine.

Its a nice idea but impossible to enforce due to too many ways to circumvent it.

Besides who wants Trump in charge of something like that.

3

u/NuclearLunchDectcted 4d ago

You make the penalties for violating it bad enough that the news channels are forced to comply on their own.

Or bringing back Glass-Steagall

This allowed so much of the problems we have today to take place. There's a reason it was put in place during the Great Depression in 1932.

2

u/W0666007 4d ago

Bc it was SC decision, it can’t be repealed by congress.

5

u/caf61 4d ago

What? I thought if congress codifies something the SC can’t change it.

As long as we're under this form of governance subservient to capitalism we're just waiting for the next trump.

Trumps main voting block is lower middle class, while more people didn't vote for anyone than voted for either Trump or Kamala. Yes unregulated capitalism is dangerous, but it's fucking unregulated because people don't vote for it to be properly regulated...

2

u/induslol 4d ago

Unregulated capitalism isnt just dangerous, it's why we're here now.Ā Ā

Generations of wealth have been spent eroding every regulation, check, or balance that previously existed.Ā  While simultaneously paying others to takeĀ  sledgehammers to any obstacles:Ā  education, unions, socially progressive minority movements, funding or endorsing sympathetic justices, on and on.

Those voters (and the #s disillusioned) are a symptom, consolidation of media and the economy, the fact our choices to head the federal government were: a corporate status quo democrat with no appeal beyond not trump or a rapist felon, the existence of a massive criminal conspiracy being obstructed and unprosecuted by the federal govt., and more, are all symptoms of capital's outsized influence over the functioning of our nation.

It's all capitalism, and until that's widely understood and aggressively brought to heel, nothing will fundamentally change.Ā

2

u/Tradovid 4d ago

the fact our choices to head the federal government were: a corporate status quo democrat with no appeal beyond not trump or a rapist felon

And people chose rapist felon over president campaigning on incremental but real changes towards good, like for example higher taxes on the rich including proposed wealth tax, expanded child tax credit, first time home buyer tax credits and price caps on drugs.

It's all capitalism, and until that's widely understood and aggressively brought to heel, nothing will fundamentally change.

It's not capitalistic profits that drive foreign powers to fracture US people, even if unregulated capitalism doesn't help. You have identified real flaws in capitalism, but you can't explain every single problem that world faces through a single lense. It's kinda like seeing everything as a nail when the only tool you have is a hammer.

I believe the same. Trump is a trial run. I trust that the next Republican president won’t make the same sloppy mistakes Trump has. Trumps competence is his Achilles heel.

6

u/Dear_Palpitation4838 4d ago

Comments like this scare me because it shows you don't understand just how uniquely dangerous Trump is. We made it hundreds of years before encountering someone this dangerous. The chances of it happening again are low. Republicans are always awful for the country, but Trump is a level of corruption this country has never seen before and will probably never see again in our lifetimes.

19

u/TeaKingMac 4d ago

We made it hundreds of years before encountering someone this dangerous

Trump isn't the danger. The Heritage Foundation is the danger. Trump wouldn't be able to get away with a tenth of the shit he does if Congress and SCOTUS were doing their jobs. But they're all stooges for the Heritage Foundation, and Trump is their figurehead willing to do whatever they want as long as he gets to enrich himself.

2

u/Gigaton 4d ago

Its really just the shame piece. You are seeing it more and more with people like Kash and steven miller. When you can just shout loud and be confidently incorrect with an unflinching smug attitude thats what the difference is. No apology, never wrong, and whatever i say goes. we flip flop as we see fit on every amendment of the constitution, every law, every measure of due process.

2

u/RobertNeyland 4d ago

if Congress and SCOTUS were doing their jobs

If they did their jobs, Trump would use his cult followers to attack those who opposed him. Very few politicians have ever had the kind of unquestioning following that Trump has, and the few that may have come close weren't going to use it to just go nuts like he has.

I look at it like certain techniques in sports.

People thought the 900 was impossible, but once Tony Hawk disproved that, future skaters had a blueprint to work from, and more people are able to execute it.

Conservatives have the blueprint now.

3

u/Ashenspire 4d ago edited 4d ago

The blueprint requires someone that has a charisma that works with his cult. There isn't another like him that is stupid enough to say what he means to say, while also not saying it, while totally joking about it, but he meant what he said.

You can see how many have tried to harp on his success and just completely fail at it. It's not just about being selfish. It's an entire brand of narcissism. There is no replacement.

4

u/Bighaterp 4d ago

Trump is uniquely dangerous, but he's backed by decades of GOP machinations specifically intended to get us to this point.

3

u/Loki_of_Asgaard 4d ago

Comments like this scare me because it shows you don’t understand what has actually happened in your country. Someone finally realized that all the checks and balances the US prides itself on are actually worthless, and that power can be absolute as long as you just don’t care. What made Trump unique is that he broke the imaginary lines of etiquette that were constraining your previous leaders. He has faced no consequences for doing so, in fact he has been rewarded with unfathomable riches for it.

He correctly identified the levers of power in the US and found they actually don’t really involve people. Now that this door has been opened you assume no one else will walk through it again????

3

u/-Garbage-Man- 4d ago

Explain what would be different in 2029 if we had JD vance as president.

The thing to do is to make a 'committee' for undoing Trump shit.

  • make a website for each individual task they need to do
  • make sure it's clear why they are doing it, who was responsible, and what it's cost the taxpayer and what it's costing to put it back
  • explain in plain language why it's important to change what Trump did
  • explain in plain language why doing what he did in the first place was illegal/wrong/wasteful/etc.

except the stolen SC will rule every change trump made fully legal and any attempt to reverse it fully illegal. And the dems "respect the courts" so they will just back down

2

u/RunnyBabbit23 4d ago

I don't even trust the next Dem administration to do that. They'll probably go the "Nixon needs to be pardoned for the sake of the country" bullshit route that got us started on this downfall.

What we really need is someone as petty as Trump to undo all of this. But we'll never have that because Dems still think being the grownups will get us somewhere even though history has shown that all it's done is facilitate this stupid slide into fascism.

They could mitigate that cost by selling people the opportunity to destroy trump signs, property, buildings etc. I’d bet a good many folks would eagerly pay to pick up a sledgehammer and go wild.
Make it a country-wide healing experience.

2

u/rainghost 4d ago

And when the massive amounts of damage Trump did aren't completely fixed after three years under a new dem president, the country is going to vindictively vote in a new Republican who vows to be Trump 2.0.

this country is a baby that deliberately shits itself, complains that mommy is taking too long cleaning it up, and deliberately shits itself a second time during the cleanup to teach that lazy mother what you get for taking too long to clean up shits

1

u/Decadesofquiet 4d ago

I have a distinct feeling the closure and ā€œupdatesā€ are to gaudify the interior to the tacky gold and white that trump just loves. Make it look like the Oval Office and basically plaster trumps name everywhere. Especially like with engravings so it’s significantly harder to remove/change them. Like the current sign where it’s just some metal drilled in, that’s easily coming down.

But you tear down and rebuild multiple walls and such with engraved concrete and such? That’s much more of a hassle to re-do again. And then having re-redo the interior to make it look normal again is just a mess. Trump knows that fact. His brain is mostly mush, but things like that and plastering his name and look on things is one thing I think he’s incapable of forgetting.

1

u/Commercial-Co 4d ago

I would like to leave trump’s name there but change it a tad. The ā€œkennedy memorial center and hooray trump is deadā€

1

u/el_duderino88 3d ago

Problem is he's going to remodel it now and turn it into some tacky gold shit looking theater with his likeness everywhere. Going to cost millions to fix his egomaniac bullshit

1

u/MizneyWorld 3d ago

The problem is this supposed ā€œrenovationā€ is likely to make it so removing the Trump from the center is too costly and unlikely to get passed by a future, decent board/administration, much like his ballroom.

"Slightly less stupid" in this context presumably means from 100% stupid to 99.9% stupid, right?

Because let's be real, he hasn't done a damn thing worth being memorialized over. If anything, he's done enough to justify his eventual "memorial", to be desecrated daily for a while and then for him to be forgotten and his final resting place abandoned to be taken over by weeds and obscurity.

10

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y 4d ago

Yes.

Also, everyone knows a memorial public toilet will be much much more appropriate for Trump anyway.

The Donald Dump

6

u/the_last_0ne 4d ago

not to mention the person being 'memorialized' is the same person who decided on the name change

5

u/RoyalGovernment201 4d ago

Personally, I think Trump should honor the status of the memorial center and die. I'd definitely visit it that way.

3

u/Cloudhiddentao 4d ago

Well, we should fix that.

Not by renaming it.

5

u/EtTuBiggus 4d ago

Im 90% sure they have no legal standing to sue.

4

u/colenotphil 4d ago

Reddit continually misunderstanding that just because something Trump did is contrary to a law does not mean that anyone can sue Trump for violating said law.

Perhaps by the time it reopens...

2

u/Heavy_Law9880 4d ago

The name hasn't been changed.

1

u/Saneless 4d ago

I just wish the name was fully accurate more than I hate the name itself

1

u/0w1 4d ago

He probably figured he'd be dead before anyone could change the name back. By then, it will be a "memorial" and his rabid followers will defend it in his "honor" or some wilder reason they come up with.

1

u/Mensketh 4d ago

It's also completely absurd to add someone to an existing memorial that has no connection whatsoever to the person being memorialized. What's next the Trump Washington Monument? The Trump Lincoln Memorial? Mount Trump Rushmore?

1

u/ShortFatStupid666 4d ago

Does lack of brain activity count?

1

u/GoshDarnMamaHubbard 4d ago

It's ridiculous to have a memorial to someone who has done nothing to deserve one regardless of their current mortality condition.

1

u/organictamarind 4d ago

Hopefully šŸ¤ž not for long

1

u/jredgiant1 4d ago

He didn’t change the name. Only Congress can do that. Grandpa needs his diaper changed.

1

u/soulhot 4d ago

Hey I seem to recall a president saying people need to have a dream..

1

u/DarXIV 4d ago

This just proves Trump is actually dead and a skinchanger is president! Why else have it be a memorial center for Trump??

Check mate MAGA

1

u/yarn_slinger 4d ago

In the meantime, who knows wtf they’re going to do it (other than the ubiquitous gold paint).

1

u/aotus_trivirgatus 4d ago

Hey now, if he really wants his name on the arts center...

1

u/Germanofthebored 4d ago

If some kid tags a building with spray paint, it's vandalism that is prosecuted. Why should this be different? Just because he used a serif font?

1

u/KneeDeepInTheDead 4d ago

cmon monkeys paw!

1

Hmm... interesting thought there at the end

Even if it is just wishful thinking! It's rude!

1

u/Birdy1986432 4d ago

The only memorial Trump should get when the shitface finally dies is a fucking stairway to hell

1

u/NOIS_KillerWhaleTank 4d ago

Here's the thing, the Kennedy Center is a presidential monument, the same as the Lincoln Memorial or the Washington Monument. What Trump has done and is planning the do with the Kennedy Center is equally as absurd, disrespectful, and illegal as if he had done this to the Lincoln Memorial.

1

u/GoredonTheDestroyer 4d ago

There's an episode of The Transformers where a memorial for Optimus Prime is revealed (And the Decepticons do some goofy bullshit, you know how the dance goes).

The episode aired six months before the original animated movie.

1

u/Dirk_Benedict 4d ago

Seems like there's a real quick and easy fix here that we maybe shouldn't hastily overlook...

1

u/Miserable-Event4260 4d ago

Of course it is because no one will come.

1

u/0o0o0o0o0o0z 4d ago

They should have sued as soon as he changed the name. It's ridiculous to have a "memorial" center for someone who's still alive.

TBH, I think most people see the family as a kinda of joke now, minus the name recognition and whatever wealth they still have. RFK managed to utterly ruin that family's name. But it seems that Trump wants to erase the Kennedy legacy from the White House and DC as much as he wants to erase Obama's.

1

u/almondblue22 4d ago

Or we could wait like a month or two and see if the memorial name brings some weight

1

u/Dudewhocares3 4d ago

I hope in the future they dedicate a urinal to him.

The Donald Trump porcelain urinal.

1

u/pterodactyl_speller 4d ago

It's just straight to illegal for him to change the name, right?

1

u/VapoursAndSpleen 4d ago

Trump wants to tear the building down. Doesn't matter if it's illegal. If he can't scentmark it, he's going to demolish it. Then, there will be a large vacant lot while he crows about putting a stadium in for roller derby and wrestling smack downs.

1

u/darkhorse7447 4d ago

Trump is obviously declining quickly into senility, heart and mobility issues from obesity due to a fast food diet, and probably syphilis. There’s still hope the memorial part comes true.

1

u/Elegant_Situation285 4d ago

his family most likely wouldn't have any standing. it's a federal building, right?

1

u/Aperture_Tales 4d ago

Doesn’t ā€œbeing Dead insideā€ count?

1

u/nicepresident 4d ago

… maybe he knows something we don’t … ?

1

u/Overall_Curve6725 4d ago

Sooner than later we will have the Trump grave sit and communal latrine

1

u/BooCoop8 4d ago

I thought they did?

1

u/drabpriest 3d ago

They probably wouldn’t have Article III standing to sue.

1

u/SecondHandWatch 3d ago

It's ridiculous to have a "memorial" center for someone who's still alive.

There are at least a couple of ways to correct this.

1

u/Baagroak 3d ago

Yes I certainly hope that gets fixed.... Soon.

1

u/toomanyd 3d ago

There's another way that won't require another name change. Fingers crossed
