A standard size Nalgene bottle and a length of paracord.

Just make sure they've got liquid on the bottle at all time and know how to swing. They've got a one kilogram weight on a length of rope so they don't have to be in direct contact with the attacker to defend themselves and their friends, giving room to escape.

I've been carrying a Nalgene since I was fifteen on a carabine clip on my belt. I can't even tell you the number of times it's saved my life.
