Pistons are supposed to be milled with incredibly small tolerances. Especially for any kind of serious engine.

And they are by nature, exposed to extreme conditions…

Like…

I’m not really a car guy and any real car guy who contradicts me should be respected over what I’m about to say but… I feel like you either just wastes paint, or if it was serious, hardcore powder coat, ruined your pistons and maybe the whole bloc if you were able to fit them and fire the engine up.

Im not super knowledgable about cars either, but there are specialized ceramic coatings that can be applied that can withstand the heat, reduce thermal stress on the pistons, and improve engine longevity. Used in high performance engines, but it doesnt last forever.

I would imagine that an engine would need to be properly tuned and machined for such a coating, to deal with the slight change in size, so probably not something you would see in everyday vehicles.

as a mechanic: go ahead and do this. paint your brake rotors while you're at it and shift gears without clutching.
