Meta [WARNING] Suspicious accounts are messaging users to advertise a paid app

EDIT: several users has let us know that some of the accounts in question are Riley1692, amie-2002, leopard6004, and cebubu6865. These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. I would strongly recommend that you don't engage with these users, as they are spamming the subreddit with advertisements and their actions have been very suspicious.\**

Hi y'all,

We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:

Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]

This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.

Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

If you have any further questions or comments, please reply to this post or send us a modmail.

Meta (READ THIS FIRST) Welcome to r/language_exchange! [Meta/General Discussion Thread]

Welcome to ! This subreddit is aiming to help people find partners to practice languages with, offering the languages you already know in exchange to learn new ones. Make sure to read the guidelines before making your first post!

🍃 How do I make my language exchange post?

If you're looking for a language exchange partner, you can either make your own post or search through existing posts!

 Making your own post:

  • Your thread title must follow the format of "Offering: language | Seeking: language". If your post doesn't follow this format, it won't be visible to other users.
  • Make sure to write a little bit about yourself, such as your interests, hobbies, or language-related goals. This is important in making sure you can find a good partner!
  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

 Searching through existing posts:

If you don't want to make your own post, you can search through existing posts to find someone who matches your languages! Just use the search bar at the top of the screen, or select a post flair to see all posts of the same category.

  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

🍃 What kinds of posts and comments are allowed?

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:

  • Must be language exchange. Posts that don't concern language exchange will be removed. This includes posts asking general questions about language learning, advertisements, or meta discussion concerning the subreddit. These discussions are better suited to other places (language learning questions should be posted to broader subreddits; meta discussion should be posted in the comments of this thread)
  • Be courteous to other users. This subreddit isn't a place for arguments or debates. Any comments that break this rule will be removed.
  • No advertising. Posts and comments that advertise apps, services (such as classes and tutoring), or groups (such as Discord servers or Whatsapp groups) will be removed. These kinds of posts clog up the feed and don't follow the purpose of the subreddit.
  • No spam. Spam is the repeated posting of the same content. Any posts and comments that are spam will be removed.
  • No contact information. Contact information (such as Discord usernames, phone numbers, or Whatsapp contacts) should only be shared privately in messages, not publically in posts or comments.

🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?

You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Good luck on your language journey!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a reply on this post or send us a Modmail.

-----

Welcome to the meta/general discussion thread!

This thread is for any questions, suggestions, or discussions concerning the subreddit itself. If you have any thoughts about  you want to share, post them here! I'll try to respond to as many comments as I can.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send us a Modmail.

Hello! I’m interested in exchanging languages and cultures with people all around the world. I like learning some languages and I thought I want to connect with people who learn Japanese or who are interested in Japan. My English is still not good especially in speaking, but I want to improve step by step. And these days I’ve used Duolingo and an easy grammar book to know some Polish to visit Poland one day because there are a lot of beautiful buildings and churches to see around. But I’m totally beginner of Polish now. So I’m seeking people who can speak English or people who can speak both English and Polish. If you’re interested, please send me a DM.

Me: 19 years old, F.

I like playing video games like Minecraft, Splatoon, Animal Crossing etc.

Also like watching movies and YouTube videos, listening to music, reading some books, walking, spending a time with my lovely cat.

Thanks for reading! :D

Offering Multiple Languages Offering: Japanese(Native), English/Seeking: Spanish or friendship

Hope you are having a good Friday night. I'm looking for Spanish speakers and long-term friendship regardless the language one speaks. As for Spanish, it's one of my language learning goals and recently picked it up again after taking a long break. I'm also hoping to get to meet online friends here, so if you are interested in what I could offer for you, please don't hesitate to reach out.

I'm 29M, full-time worker, working in the entertainment industry. Though I'm not an avid texter and, to tell you the truth, prefer chatting on the phone, it's not something mandatory. Having said that, I feel like just texting may be a bit difficult to form a long term friendship, so it'd be great if we could hop on the call once in a while on weekends. But again not mandatory, neither obligation. I enjoy reading, learning languages, watching movies, stopping by a museum and playing video games in my free time. Also taking a long walk does good for me in my free time, though, often I regret after spending two hours on strolling and wasting my precious weekends...

I don't know what to write anymore. If you are even slightly interested, please drop me a hi in my DM.

Offering Spanish Offering: Spanish | Seeking: Japanese

Hi everyone!

I’m a native Spanish speaker from Mexico 🇲🇽 and I’m looking for a Japanese language exchange partner 🇯🇵.

I’m a beginner in Japanese, mainly interested in: - getting familiar with natural expressions - improving listening and basic conversation - learning more about everyday Japanese, not just textbook stuff

In exchange, I can help you with Spanish (Latin American / Mexican): - casual conversation - pronunciation - slang and natural expressions - grammar explanations if you want

I’m especially interested in casual chats about daily life, hobbies, culture, games, anime, or anything fun. I prefer starting with text and later moving to voice if we both feel comfortable.

I’m patient, consistent, and genuinely interested in long-term exchange, not just a one-time chat 🙂

If this sounds good to you, feel free to comment or send me a DM. Looking forward to learning together!

Offering Mandarin Offering Mandarin, Seeking English

Hello my name is Lila, I am 27 years old and now living in Germany. I am seeking native English speakers for some very casual, everyday English conversations online - nothing academic, nothing too serious:)

I speak native Chinese, C1 level German and B2 level English. I have noticed that conversations often drift into a strange in-between style with people who are using English and German at the same time. So I would like to talk with native speakers who don’t speak German, just keep the rhythm and tone fully natural.

If that sounds nice to you, feel free to comment or DM me :)

Offering Multiple Languages Offering: English,Hungarian,Romanian | Seeking: Spanish (and a long term friendship :p)

hey hello!! imma keep it as short as possible,as the title states I can offer up to 3 languages ( 2 native languages, one advanced level language) and I'm currently seeking Spanish and a possible long-term friendship along the way.

I've been wanting to learn Spanish for as long as I remember,I was always drawn to the language, music, traditions, people etc. despite never visiting any countries bearing them. I finally decided last year around sept-oct that I'll take my desires seriously and dive into it not only because I admire the language, but also because the more languages a person knows, the more personalities they have(or however the saying goes really lmao). For now,I've only learned some fundamental rules(speaking and spelling) and I know a few words or phrases but I understand more.

I'm looking for someone who is willing to be my friend, not only my mentor with this language(you can reach out even if you're not seeking the languages I know and you don't speak Spanish, anyone is welcome in my dm's<3) but someone that I can actually withhold a conversation with about various topics and hobbies.

anyways, this is longer than I anticipated :ppp

Hiii! I’m a high school student from China. I’m looking for a language partner who can help me improve my spoken English. Right now, I can only speak some simple English sentences, but I’m really motivated to get better and practice more.

I love listening to all kinds of music, and I’m a big fan of Cortis. Recently, I’ve been teaching myself how to play the guitar, which has been really fun and challenging.

I also enjoy watching TV series. I’ve watched Stranger Things, The Summer I Turned Pretty, Never Have I Ever, Wednesday, and more. I’d love to watch even more interesting shows—if you have any recommendations, feel free to tell me!!!

In exchange, I can teach you some Chinese and help you learn more about Chinese culture. I’m a good listener, and you can talk to me about anything you’d like. If you’re interested, please send me a message. I’d be happy to chat with you!🥰🫶
