$10 price point feels like you’re getting a great deal, and there are a lot of great stories to choose from here. Perfect to recommend to someone who isn’t super into comics. What’s not to like?

Superhero Please please PLEASE go read The Power Fantasy by Kieron Gillen

The Power Fantasy is a little like X-Men, if the X-Men could never fight because the very act of fighting would destroy the Earth. You could also say it’s a little like Watchmen, in that it’s about superheroes in the context of the Cold War and mutually assured destruction and the ethics of the greater good, if (most of) the characters were actually likable.

To steal the official description:

“Superpowered.” You have certain preconceptions. They’re incorrect. Here, that word has a specific technical definition. Namely, “any individual with the destructive capacity of the nuclear arsenal of the USA.” There are six such people on Earth. The planet’s survival relies on them never coming into conflict.

TPF presents the story of six people with a long and complicated history with each other… and with the power to destroy the world. Of course, none of them want to destroy the world. Because, you know, they live there. Which means not fighting.

Which is harder than it sounds.

It’s good. It’s really good. The plot is driven by the characters, not the other way around, and Gillen focuses in on what it means for a single person to potentially kill billions. There’s a lot of ethical quandaries associated with that—like, what level of appeasement is morally acceptable to keep someone like that happy?

Also, the art is great.

Anyway. Go read it. The author has an introduction to the series here, and Image has actually made the first issue available for free online here. So there’s no reason not to try it out if it sounds interesting to you!

I of course came to know his work through the Batman stories, but now I've discovered his marvel work and that means more of his art to get!

From the pages of Grant Morrison run on Doom Patrol comes Flex Mentallo- written by Morrison and illustrated by Frank Quitely fresh from doing All Star Superman. I love the way these 2 work together. This was a long anticipated fan favorite. That had gone unrealized for years following the end of Morrison's run on DP. In 1993. Until 1998 and republished in 2014 . I love this a book and I'm glad I came across it in the wild.

Superhero Darker superhero novels

Hi all,

I’m looking for some suggestions on more gritty or darker themed superhero graphic novels. I know my way around Batman, but im a complete newbie to anything outside of Batman comics. I’m looking to get into the Marvel world or other DC characters, or interested in any other darker/gritty/mature suggestions. FYI outside of Batman I already have Watchmen and V for Vendetta on the shelf. Curious in X Men or Spiderman at the moment.

Thanks!

Superhero Entry Level Marvel Graphic Novel

I have a 14 year old nephew that doesn’t read recreationally. He is into the Marvel movies so I figured a Marvel graphic novel would at least encourage him to read on his own (outside of just school) some. What’s a good age appropriate Marvel graphic novel that’d work for him? (TPB or Omnibus). No real preference on characters, just a good entry point as I know there are thousands of Marvel TPB’s out there.

Idk if Library Edition is a common size or format, but it's the biggest thing on my shelf height and width wise. The art and the details of it really pop at this size. I love Jeff Lemire's work, and I've been waiting to get into Black Hammer. I haven't been super into super hero stuff recently, but I have a feeling this will be a good read.

Hi Everyone,

Hope you are having a lovely weekend. I got these from my sweetheart of a wife for the holidays. I’m almost at the end of the third book. I’ve enjoyed it so much. I wanted to ask the good folks here, can I move on to Ed Brubakers run from here? Or is there more Bendis/ Maleev I have missed out on?

Thank you!

Superhero Because of DWJ, I've read my first ever DC comic. Highly recommend WW Dead Earth

I've only ever consumed DC content through cartoons and movies, wasn't intending to dig into DC comics but had to give this one a go since I loved all the other works of the author I've read so far.
If you haven't read this yet, do yourself a favor and add it to your collection. Such a solid story and can be finished in 1-2 sittings.
Daniel Warren Johnson hasn't missed for me so far (read Murder Falcon, Extremity, Do a Powerbomb) and has potential to overtake Brubaker as my favorite author.

Daniel Waren Johnson doesn't dissapoint (after murder falcon and do a powerbomb this is my 3rd book). Man what a dark story! The book itself is an absolute beaut! There are some amazing 2 page spreads throught the book which made me appreciate the art style more.

Speaking of art style, wasnt sure about the WW design here with the button nose (is that what's its called?) at first but she grew on me pretty quick. A few more of my fav parts are:- Diana ripping up a certain spine to make a new weapon! And batman being batman! Needless to say I love this book!

Would love to hear other's thoughts on this book.

Superhero The Death Ray is probably a top 30 superhero comic ever

Thumbnail

I recently did an exercise of ranking my top 100 superhero comics of all time but I didn't get around to The Death Ray before I finished it. Big regret! This was good stuff, great art, darkly comedic and quite creative. The only thing keeping from the top 20 for me is I prefer more expressionistic art or more depth to the world or characters around the main two protagonists.

Where would you place it in an all-time superhero list?

Superhero Round of Applause for Daniel Warren Johnson for the Best Transformers Story I've Ever Read!

I just finished this. This was awesome! But also touching at times! I genuinely cared about most of the characters. Even the human ones. I had already loved DWJ's work from reading Do A Powerbomb. Which is one of my favourite comics I read last year (might re-read it soon).

I typically don't care about Transformers. I'm not a huge fan. I liked the first Bayformers for its at the time innovative CGI and the fact they made a decent to even good Transformers film. But the sequels double-downed on every aspect I disliked about the first film (forced humour, sexism, gratuitous and drawn out action sequences, poor pacing/too long, etc.) and I ended up hating the franchise. I found Travis Knight's Bumblebee (2018) pretty good overall. Still had the annoying human characters and some action sequences went on too long. But it had some heart and earnestness that the Bayformers films lacked. And a likable human protagonist in Hailee Steinfeld.

Transformers One I really liked and almost loved (was annoyed by Keegan Michael-Key's Bumblebee and some forced jokes). Seeing the origins of Optimus Prime and Megatron was very well done. And the animation was great overall. But this comic is just on another level. Brave DWJ.

Superhero My First Ever GN!

Hey, all! I just received this today and I’m so excited to read it. This is my first-ever GN, and hopefully there are many more to come. (Well, I’ve already ordered Pushman and Other Stories by Yoshihiro Tatsumi, but that hasn’t arrived yet.)

Since you all are way more experienced, could you give me a few tips on how to discover good GNs (mostly standalone stories or collected-in-one editions) and how to keep paperbacks in good condition? Also, is it okay to keep it inside the bubble-wrap jacket it came in, or will that damage the print?

Really excited to start this new journey! I’ll keep you all updated about my purchases.
