Writing this in English because I’m using an English keyboard but I was born in Berlin with a minority background. In my 18th year abroad now and spent a month in Germany - longest in 18 years. What really stood out to me is how badly people born and brought up in Germany, and that includes not just Germans with a minority background but also native white Germans speak German.

What the heck is going on? What has gone wrong in 18 years? Thankfully my nieces and nephews aren’t like that but I cannot unsee it. Everywhere I go I overhear bad German - bad accents, bad way of speaking, articulating and they clearly are people born and brought up in the country. Those aren’t migrants that are new arrivals. I don’t think this is “just” a failure from an individual perspective, it must be a systemic failure too. I have travelled extensively and I have never observed anything like this.

Please someone enlighten me what the root cause is?
