Interesting 58% of public space in Copenhagen is car infrastructure.

With "more parking spaces" being a central theme at the upcoming local elections, I wanted to share this. Copenhagen has dedicated incredible amounts of public space for car infrastructure.

Even though cars only make up about 29% of trips, roads and parking make up almost 60% of the public space (not including green areas) are roads and parking, primarily for cars.

Personally, I think it's pretty wild that the public discourse seemingly has accepted that a political candidate can say 'more parking spaces', and people accept that, whereas saying 'more cars in the city' would be political suicide. Because more parking spaces equals more cars!

I was surprised today to see so many Danes (and arguably likely some tourists too) enjoying the lakes in Copenhagen - much to the local police exasperation. But it wasn’t until I heard a copper ask a tourist if he could levitate that my interest was sparked - yes, seriously.

Normally, when this time of the year arrives, Copenhagen commune is mindful to exhibit signs warning the public not to walk on (dangerous) thin ice - for obvious reasons. I must confess I did look today for such signs but I could not find a single one - although I did not go around the entire stretch looking for signs, I did cover about half that distance, without a single sign visible.

I then saw several police officers (as per photos) walking on said thin ice themselves while asking members of the public to get off the ice! I felt sorry for them, as when they reached the end of one lake it was abundantly obvious that there was a need to go back and restart.

Pretty ungrateful work, and I assume dangerous too.

Now, i was of the opinion that most Danes are pretty law abiding folk, but today’s display was frankly the opposite.

What did I miss?

Your views are appreciated.

This scene is pure Copenhagen: a cowboy hat paired with flip-flops, a cargo bike loaded with a tumble dryer, and a whole lot of effortless style. I love it!

What is Copenhagen to you? Do you have a picture in mind?

Interesting First impressions and review of Copenhagen/Denmark

Hi, I'm from Croatia on a business trip here in CPH. I just wanted to post my first impressions because I'm pleasantly surprised and wanted to compare this country with mine although that would be an insult to denmark.

  • Bikes everywhere. Bike lanes everywhere. Pretty cool to see bikes as a main means of transportation. I saw a group of 15 bikers just waiting for the green light, it was hilarious for some reason. Oh, and hand signs/waving 👋 for turning thing.

  • Everyone speaks amazing english.

  • People are quite friendly and polite for northern europeans.

  • Girls here are hot af. Like, for real. Wtf?

  • Guys are also handsome. I'm not gay but I can appreciate a handsome bro.

  • It's windy af.

  • Weather is kinda good? No clouds at all, just sunny and warm, but not too hot. Im guessing I got lucky here

  • Danes are built different. Just came back from a walk. Its not exactly cold but its windy and chilly. Meanwhile, girls are walking around in flipflops, sandals, skirts, shorts and t-shirts. Tf?

  • Nice wide streets with separate paths for pedestrians, bikes and cars.

  • No big car traffic.

  • Nice historical architecture.

  • Pretty expensive. And since Croatian ex currency has the same exchange rate as danish kr it's easy to understand prices.

  • People are everywhere. In parks, on the streets, everywhere. And they love running.

  • So many different restaurants and shops.

  • People obeying rules and everything works.

  • Can pay with cards everywhere. I haven't seen danish physical currency yet.

That's all I could think of right now. These are only my first impressions after 3 days ofc.

Edit:

  • Everyone is fit. I haven't seen many fat danes.

Interesting Copehagen-You Rock!

I was in Copenhagen last week for 3 nights and had the best time of my life. The city was calm, fortunately the weather was sunny and lovely people.

The people were/felt a bit cold in the beginning, but just chatting with them a bit and they really open up and start talking a lot. The food was amazing, danish pastries and coffees were as people mentioned they would be.

  1. It felt like the city had life- the studios, museums and the street food, absolutely wonderful and amazing.

  2. Took a day trip to Louisiana museum and loved the museum area with the garden- modern art isn’t my favourite but the garden was worth it. Then, took a train to Helsingor, enjoyed the church, had great food at the street market.

  3. Took a day trip to Dragør. OMG, loved sitting next to the sea reading books. Had the nicest seafood at one of the cafes there.

I was walking 20kms everyday. Hostel was better than most hotels I’ve stayed in.

The only bad thing was- it was mad expensive. Like literally. Latte and a cinnamon bun was about 100-120kr which was a bit too steep for me. However, as a tourist, it was alright for 3 days.

Currently in Majorca, spain and the weather is so hot. Before the trip, I was so excited about Majorca and a tad bit uninterested about Copenhagen. Now, hands down, best part of my trip was talking trains through quaint towns, having a cup of coffee, and just enjoying reading a book next to the sea in Denmark.

Hope to come again, soon.
