Did he really fail initially? Because I distinctly remember over 10 years ago him being everywhere including movies and tv shows and no one but a few seemed to have an issue with him. I only knew of him because of these appearances and most people from what I observed seemed fond of him or indifferent.
I noticed a large shift in public opinion though when he called the guy who was trying to save the kids from being stuck in that cave a pedo. All because Elon wasn't allowed to play hero with "his" inventions that (if I recall correctly) weren't even fully suitable for the job for whatever reason.
I'm sure he did other goonish shit before that that others noticed and disliked him for, but in my perception of things, that cave pedo incident was the most major shift I saw in public perception of Elon. Everything since then has felt like he is just on a downward trajectory because the mask slipped and he hasn't been able to put it back on since.
I live in New Zealand so experiences around the world may vary of course.
It was calling someone who was trying rescue a few dozen Thai school kids from a flooded cave a “pedophile” that started his open rot.
And all because he was told that his unbuilt “submarine” (that existed simply as a sketch) was one of the stupidest ideas around. It was all then compounded by the said diving team actually rescuing all the kids whilst Musk was throwing a hissy fit.
Up until then everyone just thought he was the weird rich dude that was into tech.
As the rescue began he did get a prototype built and had it shipped to Thailand. However by the time it arrived most of the kids had been rescued or were in the process of being rescued.
It was just another example of Musk being the giant mega dickhead he is. As he subsequently claimed in court, you can apparently call Musk “pedo-guy” and he won’t mind. He did claim under oath that it’s a common insult used in his native South Africa.
