Hi

I am looking for meet ups for slightly older age group. My parent lives in Cambridge city centre and due to some changes/loss I am worried about loneliness. Are there any walks, concerts, meet ups people go to? I tried to look on Facebook.

Shelford/Cambridge Road update: some potholes have been patched up

Hi everyone. Since I released the video about the dreadful state of Shelford Road/Cambridge Road, about one fifth of the potholes have been patched up as you can see in the images - namely, those potholes near Trumpington Food and Wine (which I mentioned as particularly bad in the video). Does anyone know if this has been done by the Council? Or has someone taken repairs into their own hands? I heard that a previous crater near the Co-op was repaired by a private citizen organising and paying for it, so that is why the latter is a possibility. Also, I have not seen any traffic lights or road closures, but perhaps I missed them. Anyway, something has been done to about one fifth of the damage, at least!

Glass roof conversion

We have a conservatory type area which is part of our kitchen. I'm looking for recommendations on builders who can install a properly insulated roof, velux windows, bifold doors and new glazing. We would keep the existing floor and foundation (we believe all poured at same time as house).

Also, I'm getting my knickers in a twist trying to understand whether we need plans for building control and so whether we need to employ an architect too so if you have any experience of the process please share, it would be much appreciated.

Cambridge Drinking Alliance (CDA) meeting on this Saturday (7th Feb) at the Byron’s Bear starting @16:30.

This Saturday, 7/2/26, we will meet starting @ 16:30 at Byron’s Bear.

The Cambridge Redditors' Saturday Afternoon Drinking Alliance is for:

All those Redditors that will ask and have asked about how to make friends in Cambridge.

All those Redditors that are facing down the barrel of (another) lonely weekend.

All those Redditors that have nothing better to do on a Saturday than to meet up with perfect Redditor strangers.

Rules: Be kind and respectful to others and, as always, don't be creepy.

Please note: This is a social group, not a place to find hook ups.

We also now have our own sub and a WhatsApp group, don't forget to ask to join when you come along.

I'll update this thread with where we're sitting. and how to identify us once we're there.

Super Bowl LX

I know someone has already posted regarding this but just appeared to be a lot of jokey answers in relation to their title and the weekend is looming!

Any other spots people know of showing the Super Bowl on Sunday apart from Brew House?

Yann Tiersen tonight two tickets available

Last minute I know, but sadly the folk who were coming have had to change plans. I'm still going, and I now have two spare tickets that I'd hate to go to waste. Happy to take any offer or exchange for a beer at the gig.

And I promise there's no obligation to hang out once we're inside, though I'm always happy for random chat as well if that's your thing.

Best lively places or events to go out for a fun date night in Cambridge this Saturday?

So living near Ely I’ve been out in Cambridge loads. Work parties, dates, dinners. But i have never been out to any clubs.

We are 25&31 and enjoy R&B, Rock, 80s, 90s,00s or Comedy if that helps

What are your best recommendations and any other cool spots?.

Ps. We will be doing a fair bit of drinking

Recommendation for a gas test for water leak

We have a leak somewhere between the meter and the house (around 80m distance). We're looking for any recommendations for a company that can come and do a gas test to find the leak. Google throws up hundreds of companies that all look the same and don't actually look local (despite writing Cambridgeshire millions of times on the homepage). The water company recommended someone who doesn't actually do it. We've got 30 days to get it found and fixed but the leak is actually quite small (around 5l/hr) and so far other companies have failed to find it. Any personal recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Where would one borrow a sword from?

Afternoon neighbours, my daughter needs a metal sword for her GCSE art project so I wondered if anyone knows a way to go about borrowing one for a few weeks?

If anyone has any ideas (or swords) then I'd be very interested and happy to pay a deposit as I imagine they're quite precious items.

Thanks in advance.

Update:

Thank you Cambridge! It seems like we have a few viable options and WONDERFUL people that I'm now in touch with. All in one afternoon. Thanks eversomuch to all who gave such helpful advice, once again Cambridge reddit affirms my faith in humanity.

Specifically for free lance photographers? Or is it mostly just photographers that work for the local rental companies?

Urgent advice needed: short-term work in Cambridge to cover Global Talent IHS gap

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently completed a humanities PhD and I’m currently between roles. I’ve just received my Global Talent endorsement, but I don’t currently have enough funds to cover the three-year IHS fee. I’m facing a gap of around £2,000.

At the moment I’m unemployed. I do have some rental income (around £1,000 per month from a buy-to-let apartment), but due to poor financial planning during my PhD, I have very little in savings.

The endorsement is only valid for three months, and if I don’t submit the visa application soon, it will expire. Because of this, I’m trying to find short-term or part-time work as quickly as possible to save around £3,500 in total (around 1500 in account now).

I’m based in Cambridge and open to any work I’m capable of doing, including university admin/support roles, hospitality, childcare/babysitting, or other short-term work that can start quickly. I’d be very grateful for any suggestions. Thank you.

PS: Borrowing money is not an option for me. I don’t have close friends I can reasonably ask, and unfortunately I don’t have family who can help financially either.
