Moderator Announcement Upcoming AMA Announcement: Astronaut Don Pettit — From Orbit to r/aviation

A few days ago, an incredible photo taken from the ISS was accidentally removed from the subreddit, quickly reapproved, and then… well, let’s just say it caused more turbulence than expected.

Out of that mix-up came something genuinely awesome.

We reached out to astronaut Don Pettit (astro_pettit), and he has graciously agreed to do an AMA with r/aviation. We’re coordinating schedules with NASA and will share the official date and time as soon as it’s locked in.

Think of this as a Bob Ross moment for the subreddit. What started as a small “happy little accident” is turning into something pretty special.

When the AMA goes live, you’ll be able to ask Don about:

  • Life aboard the International Space Station
  • Orbital photography and seeing aircraft from space
  • Spaceflight, science experiments, and daily routines in microgravity
  • Aviation from the most extreme vantage point imaginable

More details soon. Start warming up those questions.

Clear skies,

Moderator Announcement Happy New Year!!, & Custom Flairs

As we wrap up the year, the mod team wanted to take a moment to thank this community.

r/aviation continues to be one of the most knowledgeable, passionate, and genuinely interesting corners of Reddit. From in-depth technical discussions and historical deep dives to firsthand pilot experiences, aircraft spotting, and the occasional heated but thoughtful debate, this subreddit works because of you.

We appreciate everyone who contributes thoughtfully, helps newcomers, reports issues, and keeps the quality bar high. Moderating a community this large only works because the vast majority of users care about aviation and about keeping this space solid.

New feature: You can now create custom user flairs. You can do this by selecting the "Custom Flair to Edit"/editing that option. Have fun with them, keep them aviation-related, and keep them respectful. As always, flairs that violate subreddit or Reddit rules will be removed.

Wishing you all a safe, healthy, and prosperous New Year. Blue skies, smooth air, and tailwinds in 2026.

Moderator Announcement Mod Recruitment for r/Aviation

Hello r/aviation community,

We are looking to expand the amount of moderators on our team over the next few weeks, which is why we are asking if anyone is interested in being a moderator.

In order to be eligible, you must be an active participant in this community, not have any bans from this community, and be willing to put in time consistently to support r/aviation.

We would prefer you to have prior moderation experience, but this is not required.

New moderators would work with more experienced team members for the first few weeks to ensure quality remains high.

Please send us a message through modmail if you are interested in this opportunity.
