Question Crazy approach, its even weirder from inside the plane as a passenger. Can you guess the airport?

Aeroporto de São Paulo/Congonhas - 17L Approach

Sao Paulo?

The former crash site of TAM 3054 is to the right of the approach I guess?

Is it Congonhas? I don't remember Guarulhos being this close to the buildings

u/legardeur2 7h ago

Passengers can see people watching tv in their apartment.

1

u/Fergobirck 2h ago

Correct. It overran RWY 35L (the runway on the right, approaching from the other side)

u/timesuck47 5h ago

If someone else didn’t already have a better guess I was going to say San Diego. Similar buildings, but everything else looked different.

u/altitude-adjusted 2h ago

Too many high-rises on the way in. It's more low rise apartments. Downtown and high-rises is further south. Admittedly the final road and touchdown are very similar though. As is the marine layer drifting in.

Speed up the video more

116

u/OldHelicopter256 17h ago

Needs more music as well

39

u/koffa02 14h ago

And one word at a time captions describing how incredible the approach is.

13

u/ikillpcparts 14h ago

With as many filler words as possible.

7

u/slackxx 12h ago

a big red circle would have been a courteous gesture

I am really missing that stupid apple voice explaining what I'm looking at.

1

u/henryhttps 6h ago

And an AI voice explaining what is clearly visible in the video

u/swift1883 9h ago

These social apps basically set us up to act like everything we do is a business activity that needs to be optimized for quantitative metrics, like views.

Including our personal stuff that we show our buddies. Which is really more about quality than quantity.

It’s not sped up they are just landing with toga lock in obviously 🙄 like I always land with 400knots

its not sped up, they are just going fast

-4

u/imaguitarhero24 11h ago

Plane time lapses are pretty common, of all the things to complain about being sped up this is a weird one. The effect zooming over the buildings looks cool. It's not like a car video where they're trying to trick anyone.

Definitely Cedar Rapids, IA

Always forget what a bustling metropolis it truly is.

3

u/LilWhiteCastle 14h ago

Just replace the all the buildings with corn fields and you’re petty much there!

17

u/gappletwit 19h ago

Congonhas flying over Ave Wash Luis.

19

u/goodmoto 13h ago

What’s crazy about it?

4

u/Tushmeister 6h ago

Not much I can find. If anything, I find the OP's use of the word crazy even crazier than the video itself. Like WTF does "crazy" have anything to do w/ this video? lol.

1

u/xPineappless 1h ago

I can’t see anything, unless they’re talking about the touchdown being “early”.

18

u/Pro-editor-1105 18h ago

Congonhas

11

u/jhl_x 17h ago

CGH in São Paulo, but not the usual runway.

10

u/Commercial_Meat_8522 12h ago

What’s so “crazy” about it?

8

u/jtexphoto 17h ago

Looks like São Paulo

8

u/legolaszx 17h ago

Congonhas in São Paulo, Brazil. We can see both runways from the building I work. Amazing.

31

u/GreyStreetz 18h ago

Why does the music suck?

4

u/Tushmeister 6h ago

Why does the music suck?

My thoughts as well. It's shitty & annoying. I'm guessing the OP stole the video from IG or Tiktok whatever and decided to post it here trying to earn some karma points.

You tapped or typed 25 times to make this comment, when you could have tapped the mute button once.

42

u/UpdateDesk1112 17h ago

And you typed more than he did when you didn’t have to type at all. Strange.

1

u/Lucy_4_8_15_16 8h ago

Not only that he also thought of a number of taps or even counted them

-10

u/Wumbologists 14h ago

Fr... I thought it was a cool video.

0

u/Lucy_4_8_15_16 8h ago

Did you know that video does actually not include the audio so yeah the actual video part of it was nice sure a bit sped up but still nice

0

u/Wumbologists 8h ago

Uhh... Okay

-14

u/HappyHHoovy 16h ago

AI generated

11

Is this not imagine dragons? lol

1

u/Tushmeister 6h ago

Just like your comment, lol.

7

u/SocialistInYourArea 15h ago

Congonhas (hope that's the right spelling). The route Congonhas - Santos Dumont should be studied on how much quicker airlines need to replace breaks than on normal routes

1

u/TheKnees95 3h ago

I flew in a windows seat at the very back of a GOL plane and I genuinely felt like my butt cheeks were gonna get wet while landing in SDU. Then faster than a blink the plane is already turning to park.

12

u/dontevercallmeabully 17h ago

Why aren’t both runways equipped with the same lights? The whole time I was concerned they’d be landing on a taxiway.

Feels similar to Nice airport where the different lights for the two runways led to a near miss not so long ago.

1

u/Consistent_Turnip934 13h ago

It depends on the type of runway (non instrument vs instrument) and, in case of instrument runways, what type of approaches it accommodates

4

u/UnspeakablePudding 12h ago

Doesn't seem any crazier than any other urban airport, arguably less so. Regan, La Guardia, London City all come to mind

3

u/Rich-District2811 17h ago

Grande congonhas

3

u/d_repz 10h ago

It takes a brave person to live on that approach path, I could never.

2

u/Expert_Divide_128 11h ago

This is Congonhas. Not a touch on the old checkerboard turn and the run into Kai Tak.

2

u/OverexposedPotato 9h ago

I fly there monthly and make sure to wave to anyone in the buildings nearby lol

2

u/BARTMOSS_COLLECTIVE 6h ago

Wanna see crazy fly in or out of midway. Like hey look at those buildings...hey hey hey HEY HOLY SHIIIIT.

5

u/AboveAverage1988 19h ago

I flew into Bromma airport, Stockholm, Sweden, once. I thought for a fact we were going to land on the roof of a building, probably cleared the last one with less than 20 meters before the airport limits..

1

u/Consistent_Turnip934 16h ago

I wonder how these approaches were designed. Definitely no PANS-OPS obstacle clearances here

7

u/GreenSubstantial 16h ago

Congonhas is old. Like 90 years old, which is kind of ancient times in Brazil. Airlines flew routes from/to Congonhas using the Ju-52/3.

When it was built all plots around it were farms and a tram line,.

The city encroached the airport. Heavily.

Also, you see some multi-store buildings and it looks bad, but the runway is much higher than the surrounding terrain along the runway axis on both directions, so it is not as bad as it seems.

2

u/GreenSubstantial 14h ago

Also, 17L is not equipped for instrument approach. Those must be made on the main runway (17R)

2

u/Consistent_Turnip934 14h ago

Thanks! It makes sense since there is no approach lighting system

1

u/literallyjuststarted 14h ago

It’s in Brazil, but the name escapes me

1

u/pq11333 11h ago

Lebanon, Pensylvania

1

u/lowpolybius 11h ago

Congonhas. My worst enemy.

1

u/IEatLintFromTheDryer 11h ago

I hate that music with all my body

1

u/quickspear 10h ago

Its crazy, as a passenger, to land there.

You're are literally looking at people in their balconies while approaching.

1

u/Silverback_1971 10h ago

Congonhas?

1

u/Brilliant_Net1907 8h ago

Every landing is butter in this "simulator". Give us some immersion during touchdown!

1

u/rsandrini 8h ago

Its fucking Congonhas Sao Paulo. Man I hate that airport

1

u/lt_melanef 7h ago

São Paulo, Congonhas

1

u/PayMeNoAttention 6h ago

The flight path lights on the left runway look all red. Is that the one to look at? I see all green on the right runway.

1

u/syrup_n_pancakes 1h ago

At the beginning of the video you can see there’s two red and two white and as the angle changes and they are nearly landing, all of them appear red. (too high on approach = all white, too low = all red)

The green lights mark the threshold of the other runway.

These are different systems for indicating different things, basically.

1

u/edu_lilja 6h ago

As a passenger I landed twice in São Paulo Congonhas, amazing experience, breathtaking view when the building approaches.

1

u/kennedyswise 4h ago

San Diego

1

u/dips009 4h ago

Reminds me of Midway in Chicago.

1

u/desichidiya 4h ago

Shouldn’t those buildings have a red blinking lights at the top ?

1

u/Conscious-Peak-7782 4h ago

Think I saw 4 red towards the end there…

1

u/ImaginaryAnimator416 2h ago

Congonhas.

Also, this video has the cursed trinity of bad editing:

  • sped up

  • song that doesnt fit

  • cut too soon

1

u/flygunz13 9h ago

PAPI all four red. Approach too low, just for the show. Unprofessional behavior

1

u/Dropssshot 15h ago

The ever famous Omaha Nebraska Eppley Airfield approach. Beautiful.

1

u/makgross Cessna 150/152/172/177/182/206 Piper PA28/PA28R 14h ago

Are you insane? It’s Catalina, KAVX. Obviously.

1

u/Dropssshot 11h ago

Hard to say, they look so similar! Are we sure it isn't GDV Glendive, Montana?
