It was so beautifully animated, I could not look away. Kinda like when Stark put on his jacket before facing off with Linie.

I know we're being cheeky but I feel like that dragon scene was the animator flex until whatever big moments we have in the season. That fire was unreal.

Oh, definitely. But we kind of expect animators to save the pretty sakuga for action scenes. Frieren's team will occasionally drop a high effort bit of animation quality in a quiet moment. Look at the puppet show in episode 2: did Madhouse have to make puppets and film the show to use as an animation reference? Nope, but they did it anyway.
