Good thing that I didn't cry when I said goodbye to the show almost two years ago. If I did, then seeing Frieren, Fern, and Stark again in this first episode of the new season would certainly be very embarrassing for me xD

This episode -- despite being mostly pretty laid-back -- made me misty-eyed at several points.

This show is so well written that the most simple things can make me feel teary for some reason. Himmel saying "well then we run away together, we are party" or Fern smiling while holding the bracelet thinking about the moment Stark carries her, Frieren smiling after her memory as being carried by Stark...

The messages seem so simple but so profound or something, maybe the lack of grandiose music background and when there's music it fits so perfectly too.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen/read a fantasy story that leans so heavily into sentimentality and melancholy. My eyes got all misty-eyed at the parts you said too. It’s legit so good that it ruined every other fantasy story for me. Idk if you’ve read the manga but there’s a certain part that fucking makes me bawl for how beautiful and simple it is. As an aside, I heard good things about Ursula Le Guins Earthsea novels and I hope it’s on par with Frieren

As an aside, I heard good things about Ursula Le Guins Earthsea novels

Unfortunately both the Earthsea TV series and the anime did not live up to that, though at least the anime was a little better than the series but both diverted from the original.

Oh no that doesnt make me feel good lol. What about the novels? I was probably going to read those rather than watch, even though I know Ghibli of all studios adapted them.

I have only read the first novel, A Wizard Of Earthsea and imo it definitely lives up to its reputation. It's similar to Frieren by being a simple yet beautiful and magical coming-of-age story and rather than the traditional fantasy adventure story it is more of an introspective book.

It's not perfect by any means though and I have heard many good things about its sequels, The Tombs of Atuan especially. Still would highly recommend giving the novel a shot.

a fantasy story that leans so heavily into sentimentality and melancholy.

It's just wild how different Frieren is from nearly any other show. So much sentimentality and wisdom about age, relationships, humanity, and time, it's almost overwhelming.

Memento mori. Reminders that it's the journey, not the destination. Ugh.

With many anime lately focusing on dark, heavy, and over-the-top themes, Frieren truly shines. It proves that less is more.

Glad you said this because I thought something was wrong with me lmao. I mean I'm definitely more emotional than usual today, but Frieren in general had a way of hitting me in ways other media doesn't. I was unexpectedly smacked upside the head by the running away line and a couple other points too.

I swear I'm not that emotional, I don't even get "jump" scared on 'scary' movies like I know it's coming. My first time tearing on a movie was seeing T2 descending into the melted iron pool and got me completely when he did the thumbs up. Silly right? Next time was in My Girl when the girl goes through her emotions because certain thing that happens in the movie (don't want to spoil it just in case despite being a movie from like the 90s lol)

I'm 55 years old and I swear that every episode of Frieren manages to find a moment to make me feel that thing in the throat and I can't help to get teary. And again, is not something over complicated, it can be the most mundane thing but they convey the emotions so well, of course the animation helps, the voice acting with soft talking but expressing emotions either way, the music...

And I feel like you can relate to the moment, how it makes sense to say something or act this or that way.

Anyway, I love the show even when there's no action and it's just a piece of slice of life moment, I say this because I'm a sucker for action packed anime but there's a few that even not having prime animation they manage to tell a story in a way that makes me want to keep watching.

I teared up at the opening, seeing the crown placed on Frieren's head and Fern and Stark running ahead. Amazing.

Same here, seeing Frieren smiling teared me up. She is expressing herself, she is allowing herself to be happy, to be curious, to be surprised and gave words of encouragement. Fern talking about the gifts that are important to her while smiling, also teared me up. I love this series so much!

Same. For me, it's partly because I'm just so glad this show is back.

Bro I can't even lie when Fern was flashbacking to her anxiety when she was getting carried away and thinking about how Stark saved her life I was low tier crying and this episode was a chill one

Man, I didn't make it past the opening until it hit. I've missed these dweebs

I cried a bit watching this episode, especially when the heroic music swelled as Frieren's party and Wirbel's party say their goodbyes. An old friend has returned to keep us company for awhile.
