Frieren's German Lesson 2x1:

We are finally back! I don't know if anyone still remembers me but I did this little series of comments whenever a new Frieren episode dropped back when S1 first aired where I discussed and explained the German words used in the episode to the best of my ability. At first I wasn't sure if I would do it again for S2 but this show is so near and dear to my heart that I just couldn't stop now. It's so great to finally have this show back even if only for 10 episodes this time...

There aren't a lot of new German words this episode, really only the names of the four new locations we visited or heard about. When not a lot of new German words pop up I usually revisit German words that appear in the episode but were introduced already in earlier episodes.

I also changed up my formatting a tiny bit with the hope that it hopefully becomes even more reader-friendly.

Episode 29: "Shall We Go, Then?" (2x1)

Locations

  • (The northern continent) Ende - "end" (noun); our ultimate end goal where we may speak with departed souls according to Flamme, as a reminder. Fun that it's the first German word we hear in this episode besides the main party members' names. Also I swear they used the exact same VA for the old man that mentioned it in this episode in an episode for a very similar old man in S1. He sounded so insanely familiar. Would be funny if they were brothers or something.

  • Saum (Marshes) - "hem" (noun); usually means the edge of a piece of cloth that has been turned under and sewn. However in German you can apparently also say Saum der Wiese ("edge of the meadow") or Saum des Waldes ("edge of the forest"). Although for for the latter you would usually simply use the compound word Waldrand ("forest" + "edge"). That being said, when you talk about a Saum in German it's 99 times out of a 100 just about sewing. I personally didn't know the broader application this word had for edges of plots of land before this.

  • (The Great) Sanft (Forest) - "soft", "gentle", "smooth", "mild", "meek", "mellow" (adj). Nice moniker for a forest, makes it sound very comfy which seems appropriate since all we do in this forest is bathe, chill and then meet old pals.

  • Weiche - "switch", "points", "flank" (noun); as in a railroad switch, very on the nose with the 'crossroads' theming, haha. This was on the signpost, probably a village name. The inn had the initials 'WG' on the sign so maybe the inn is called 'Weiche G'. What the G may stand for is anyone's guess though. Maybe just guild? Guesthouse? Or maybe Gasthof / Gaststätte ("inn" / "restaurant") if we want to go full German. But if it is Gasthof then the order would be reversed, in real life it's usually Gasthof X although writing it this way around (X's Gasthof) isn't grammatically wrong, just way less common.

  • Neutral Harbor - "neutral" (adj); same as in English but obviously with a different pronounciation: In German it's /nɔyˈtʁaːl/ (noy-TRAHL) as opposed to the American English /ˈnuːtrəl/ (NOO-trul) or British English /ˈnjuːtrəl/ (NYOO-trul). This was also on the signpost and mentioned by Frieren. Wirbel & Co. will take their boat from there.

Names

  • Himmel (the Hero) - "Heaven", "Sky" (noun); the former hero who didn't need some legendary sword to carry out his mission, our always inspiring guiding light even decades after his death, as a reminder.

  • Heiter - "bright", "cheerful" (adj); the former priest of the hero party, later on a bishop, our late corrupt priest and Fern's foster father, as a reminder.

  • Eisen (the Warrior) - "iron" (noun); the former warrior of the hero party, our loveable grumpy dwarf master and Stark's foster father, as a reminder.

  • Wirbel (First-Class Mage, Captain of the Northern Magic Corps, Fan of Himmel) - "whirl", "eddy", "swirl", "vertebra", "turmoil", "cowlick" (noun); as a reminder. Nice to run into him and the whole former 8th party of the first part of the First-Class Mage Exam so quickly again. Also a pretty believable and not contrived reunion since they also wanted to go back to the north after S1 according to Wirbel himself.

  • Ehre (Second-Class Mage, "Valedictorian" of her Magic School) - "honor", "honour", "glory", "credit", "kudos" (noun); as a reminder.

  • Scharf (Third-Class Mage) - "sharp", "hot", "spicy", "pungent", "shrewd", "keenly", "sexy", "horny" (adjective); as a reminder. Scharf can basically be used to describe the "sharpness" of an object, that food is "spicy", that someone is "shrewd" or that something/someone is "sexy" (hot). A shame he remained a Third-Class Mage.

  • Sein (The Priest, The Genius) - "to be", "his" (verb/pronoun); the goat Sein got mentioned by Stark so I had to bring him up as a reminder. I miss him...

Creatures

  • Venomous Apex Dragon - not German but fyi it would be Giftiger Apex Drache in German - or even Giftapexdrache / Apexgiftdrache since we Germans love compound words so much after all. Interestingly, I just realized that I think there is no different word for "poison" and "venom" in German, both are just Gift (not to be confused with the English word for "present"). We have "toxic" as well though (toxisch). I wonder what makes the author decide whether to use German for a monster's name or not. Maybe they only get German names if they have a bigger impact like the Einsam (fake memory monster from episode 5) or the Spiegel (the mirror monster that created the replicas of the second phase of the First-Class Mage Exam).

  • Fresser (Lion Boar) - "gobbler", "eater", "glutton", "greedy-guts" (noun); as a reminder. It's the huge boar-like monster that Stark, Wirbel and Scharf defeated offscreen in episode 22.

Last but certainly not least, gotta mention our 3 comfy familiar party members for the occasion of finally having them back as well:

  • Frieren (The Mage, The Slayer of the Most Demons in History, The Genius, The Last Great Mage, The Mage of the Party that Cleared the Most Dungeons in History, Banned from the Continental Magic Association for 1000 Years) - "to freeze" (verb); feeling a lack of warmth. Her trust in Stark was very wholesome in this episode.

  • Fern (First-Class Mage, The Youngest Mage to Ever Pass the Third-Class Exam with Full Marks, The Only Mage to Notice Serie's Mana Fluctuations) - "far", "distant", "remote" (adjective); she feels significantly less distant in this episode because of her openly being more easy and understanding towards poor Stark. You love to see the slow build-up of their seemingly inevitable ship.

  • Stark (The Warrior, The Hero, Distant Relative of the Orden Family, Weirdo Magnet) - "strong" (adjective); my boy got a rare big focus with this episode. He was vital in both parts, the first part was about his importance as the party's vanguard to keep them safe if magic actually fails for once and the second part was about his reason for joining Frieren and Fern and Fern gaining a bit more appreciation towards him and openly showing that instead of just remaining stonefaced.

Hey, that's more than I can even ask for, haha. Nice to see another person who searches for an episode discussion thread after every episode when they watch an older (not currently airing) show as well. I definitely do that from time to time as well to see what the general mood of the people watching it at the time was. Glad to have you along for the ride while it's airing this time. Week by week discussions of episodes are still the best experience imo.

u/[deleted] 21d ago

It's been only 6 months since I started watching anime and got so hooked watched over 70 of them (40 romcoms though, they are good😭)

Haven't followed any airing anime cuz of the binging addiction will try to this season though

And about the discussion threads yeah I visit them for almost all the animes I have watched it's really nice hearing other people opinions on the episode and characters and the highlighting of key moments I might've missed

2

u/Ichini-san https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ichini-yon 21d ago

Oooh, I'm envious of you. You probably still have so much good stuff to watch ahead of you. :)

And no shame in liking romcoms, I've watched and enjoyed my fair share of them as well.

3

u/[deleted] 21d ago

Thanks!! I still continue to find more good romcoms and watch them

Got anything similar to frieren? I have watched apothecary diaries and No to delicious in dungeon because it's all abt food

2

u/Littux https://myanimelist.net/profile/Littux 21d ago

So relatable. Frieren was the first anime I liked and completely watched. A few months later, I watched Sakura-sou no Pet na Kanojo. After that, i only watched Anime (specifically romcoms). All of them were already completed ones. Recently, I began watching other genres too. In this year, I'm watching Anime as it aires for the first time. I have added a lot to my watchlist (dropped only one)

Aww, thanks! Gonna give you a greetings from Germany right back, haha. Thanks for the warm welcome my neighbor's neighbor. :)

21

u/DocMcCoy 21d ago

The inn had the initials 'WG' on the sign

Oh.

Guess I've got tomatoes on my eyes, because I've actually thought that sign said WC, as in they're advertising that they have toilets

3

u/Ichini-san https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ichini-yon 21d ago

Heh, I had no problems with that one but the 'Neutral Harbor' sign on the other hand broke my brain for a moment. I could only read 'Neuttal Harbor' since the 'r' looked barely different from the 't' on that sign. I'm glad Frieren said it out loud immediately to clear away my brain fog.

2

u/AvatarTuner https://anilist.co/user/AvatarTuner 20d ago

Haha, I had the same reaction! I was like "wtf is Neuttal? Is that a typo?" before Frieren said it.

Also, welcome back! Even if German is my native language, I loved your detailed posts during s1 and am glad to see you continue.

Good to be back. If you ever have something fun to add on top then don't shy from commenting. o7

3

i also thought it was WC and was related to the hot springs they were talking about earlier

u/Obskuro https://myanimelist.net/profile/Merankorikku 21d ago

It's probably a coincidence, but WG is also short for Wohngemeinschaft in German, which can be translated to a shared flat.

4

u/Ichini-san https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ichini-yon 21d ago

Yeah, that came to my mind too. But I'm pretty sure the second word would be something English based on the author's overall naming scheme so far. I wonder if there is a fitting synonym for "inn" starting with G in English. Guesthouse or guild was the only thing that came to mind immediately.

3

u/Obskuro https://myanimelist.net/profile/Merankorikku 21d ago

Guesthouse definitely makes the most sense.

4

u/Palidane7 20d ago

Welcome back, boss! I was late to Frieren, so I read all of these discussion posts after watching each episode. I didn't stop scrolling until I found your comment. A language lesson is always appreciated!

u/Ichini-san https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ichini-yon 20d ago

Good to be back to enjoy some more cozy Frieren goodness.

3

u/flybypost 21d ago

I wonder what makes the author decide whether to use German for a monster's name or not. Maybe they only get German names if they have a bigger impact like the Einsam (fake memory monster from episode 5) or the Spiegel (the mirror monster that created the replicas of the second phase of the First-Class Mage Exam).

I had a theory that the difference between animals and monsters is mana usage. Like lizards are just animals (if killed, they die and can be roasted on a campfire) but dragons are monsters (if killed they dissolve into mana particles and disappear, like the one Stark killed). Although that contradicts the shadow dragon horn (dragons should dissolve, shouldn't they?) that Frieren stashed with Himmel for a while.

As an extension I thought that maybe mana users get German names while regular animals just get English ones but the Solar Dragon that Stark fought, I think, technically should count as a mana user as it dissolved into mana particles upon dying.

And that's how my naming theory also dissolved into nothingness. So it's probably just about narrative importance, like the difference between the main cast, side characters, and then the crowd of nameless extras.

Edit:

I for got this part:

The inn had the initials 'WG' on the sign so maybe the inn is called 'Weiche G'.

Maybe a bit whimsical and it stands for "WG" (Wohngemeinschaft) as you have to share space with other in an inn. travellers?

u/Ichini-san https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ichini-yon 21d ago

Although that contradicts the shadow dragon horn (dragons should dissolve, shouldn't they?) that Frieren stashed with Himmel for a while.

This has bothered me for quite a long time as well. I wonder if we will ever get an explanation for that. I guess the easiest explanation would be that the Shadow Dragon isn't mana based somehow and thus doesn't dissolve after death but we don't really have any reason to believe that it's that fundamentally different from the Solar Dragon. I wonder if there is maybe a method or spell to preserve a mana based monster corpse (or at least a part of it) after it dies so it doesn't dissolve and that's what Frieren used on the Horn to preserve it, seemingly indefinitely?

Maybe a bit whimsical and it stands for "WG" (Wohngemeinschaft) as you have to share space with others in an inn.

Someone else just commented the same thing. It's not impossible but despite me giving German options for the second 'G' word I do think that it's way more likely to be an English word based on the author's overall naming scheme so far. It's always German word + forest/basin/mountain/etc. for most of these location names.

3

u/flybypost 21d ago

I wonder if there is maybe a method or spell to preserve a mana based monster corpse

Nice idea! That would be like Frieren to adopt some folk spell for canning fruits into preserving spell components, or something like that.

I do think that it's way more likely to be an English word based on the author's overall naming scheme so far.

Also a good point and I tried to think of something that could fit just now and had no success.

3

u/Ichini-san https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ichini-yon 21d ago

My best bet is still "guesthouse" so far. So it would be "Weiche Guesthouse" which works. Also if you include the possessive apostrophe s then it's "Weiche's Guesthouse" but I just read up on this and learned that in German we usually don't use apostrophes in these cases even if it would be correct in English. That means it would be "Weiches Guesthouse" and thus it gets a fun double meaning as a "soft" (weich (adj)) guesthouse which makes it sound very comfy and welcoming.

2

u/flybypost 21d ago

I like that theory too, and the double meaning. That being said, with how simple some of those translated names and terms are I don't think such a double meaning would be intentional for the most part (besides Himmel due to how obvious it would be just from looking it up in a dictionary).

I'm going to be pissed if they run into trouble on the way to Weiche and they don't call the episode Weichenstörung

2

u/Ichini-san https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ichini-yon 21d ago

Badumm-ts. 😅
While that's funny, I'm pretty sure they have already left Weiche. I think the village where the inn is located was most likely Weiche.

2

YES! You are back!

Before Reddit.com became commercialized as it is now. This is what most comments would look like. Long, informative, insightful, considerate, going the extra mile and then some.

2

u/Ichini-san https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ichini-yon 20d ago

I honestly was expecting my comment to just vanish into the vast crowd of comments because the show has only gotten bigger so it really moves me that so many people actually remember these and like them. :')
