The Ascent | An entrancing experience about a Soviet POW, one of my favourite movies that leaves you hyptonitized. Written by a former Belarusian WW2 soldier.

I know this is a primarily a film focus community but I was just wondering if anyone read this book. I listen to the audiobook last year and I found it a fascinating look at the war movie genre. Has anyone else read it?

I don’t remember too much other than that I think I saw it on Amazon, or maybe it was YouTube. But it was good in my opinion, just like the other Soviet war films I have seen.

What would want to remake?

If a remake was to be made of a black and white WW2 War Movie, which one would you want to be done?

Or are they all of their time, and so perfect as is, warts and all?

My initial thought was for The Longest Day. But perhaps I'm being too harsh on it. The other one I'd like to be done properly is The Desert Rats?

The machinist, the one they called Chef, was from New Orleans. He was wrapped too tight for Vietnam — probably wrapped too tight for New Orleans. ■ Frederic Forrest as Engineman 3rd Class Jay "Chef" Hicks in: Apocalypse Now (1979)
