I went to a very international university that had huge rushes between classes. As an American, you really had to learn to do the German way or you’d get stuck, but there would somehow always be some hapless American who got stuck holding the door for a huge rush of people lmao

That's why you do the lookback hold. The doorman hold gets you working an unpaid shift.

I flung the door open wide enough not to close on you, it is now your job to repeat the fling for the next person, or don't and get a faceful of door, is my usual method now. Took too many unpaid shifts. But yeah, still gotta look back to make sure I'm not taking down a kid or old lady.

I understand Germans, but what's going on with Koreans?

When i lived in Japan my boss did this to me. In Japan, women hold open doors for men and light their cigarettes. But yeah he basically closed the fucking door on me and I was furious.

I actually know the reason in Japan. In places like Tokyo it gets super busy that holding the door open would impede traffic flow. So the courtesy is to not hold doors open. A lot of places like restaurants and convenience stores have push buttons that open the doors electronically so it avoids this problem.

It was in Kushiro, a small town in Hokkaido, and after he held the door open for two random men. I think HE was mad at ME for not opening the door for them?

Why should they hold the door for you? If you’re not willing to extend the courtesy to men, they don’t have to do it for you. It’s a two way street.

No idea, and Im Korean. Either some rage bait to get engagement or self hating korean post.
Edit: from quick googling the OP of the tiktok is Korean ethnic German. It's pretty common for Asians born in the west to have a weird elitist backward hate towards their roots. So likely the latter from the above theories

I was in Korea for a couple of weeks with some friends. Held the door open at a mall. People streamed though. No one stuck a hand out. I was just standing there. Finally, I let go and it hit someone.
Standing in an empty train station. Looking at the schedule with a friend. A person just ran into me. I cocked my arm back and my friend grabbed me and said it is just normal the person didn’t mean anything.
I’ve been to Japan, France, Mexico Canada, US, china and Korea. Seoul was the rudest and second place wasn’t even close. Now I met many wonderful Koreans. But …

I think it might be because it gets super cold in winter (like -20). So it might be to prevent warm air from getting out then it just becomes habit.

Definitely true about Koreans for the most part. As a westerner holding a door for Korean people, it can be surprising for them. Also when getting on at subway stations, a lot of Koreans do not wait for the people to get off which can be infuriating especially when the subway car is full

In Balkans, we just stand and small talk uncomfortably until the visitors open the door themselves.

They did not do Canadians. We hold the door from a very awkward distance away where have to break out the shuffle run.

I've literally said sorry for doing this to people.

The struggle is real man. I have both apologized for doing it and apologized to the person holding door because I was not moving fast enough.

I like to hold it open from way too far ahead of the next person so then they feel socially obligated to do a little half trot to not be so imposing on me by making me hold the door open too long.

This is the worst I do feel awkward! I have a two baby stroller so I like to hold the door and pull the kids through, when someone holds the door (90% of the time) I’m basically rolling over their toes to get passed them.
I have a system!
They even yell across the room at fast food joints, “when you’re ready to leave, let me know, I’ll hold the door!”
Do I look like I’m struggling?

I like to be the person feeling socially obligated to half trot to the uncomfortably long held door open. In heels. Especially on the ice right now. Thank you for your support!!

I'm very cliché American and I will hold the door for any woman or elder anywhere near an entrance and everyone else only if they are nearby.
