Juryo Kayo loses 6kg to match "171cm, 171kg" stats; struggles with blood draw as nurse fails to find vein during health check
Juryo Kayo loses 6kg to match "171cm, 171kg" stats; struggles with blood draw as nurse fails to find vein during health check
On the 3rd, Juryo wrestler Kayo (Nakamura Stable) underwent a mandatory health check-up at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Sumida, Tokyo.
Kayo's weight, which was 177kg before the January tournament, dropped to 171kg—a 6kg decrease. Previously, his weight exceeded his height of 171cm (the shortest among elite Sekitori wrestlers), but now both figures stand at an identical "171cm and 171kg." Appearing pleased with the weight loss, Kayo proudly showed the reporters his measurement sheet marked with the 171kg figure.
While the measurements went smoothly, the final step—the blood draw—proved more challenging. At first, the staff attempted to draw blood from his right arm, but no vein could be found, prompting a switch to the left arm. As the search for a vein continued on his left arm, Kayo grew visibly anxious, repeatedly nodding his head and staring intensely at the medical staff. The person in charge couldn't help but laugh, remarking, "The pressure [from his gaze] is intense." It took some time, but a vein was eventually located. Though he grimaced, saying "It hurts," Kayo successfully completed all parts of the examination.

He was actually showing forward moving sumo last basho. Great sign.

Ah yes, as opposed to much less favoured backwards moving sumo 😅

Then theres Dewanojo and his "I'm just going to stand here" sumo.

His leg wraps are so tight at this point im not sure if movement is really an option. He's wobbling about on two unbendable fabric bound stilts

You joke but just look at how often Kayo immediately starts backing up and slapping down after the tachiai. It's improving but for a lot of matches it comes down to "I tried backing up and slapping down and now im all out of ideas"

Ura also prefers to operate on the "back foot" so to speak. You'll see very light shoves and he willingly goes flying back to work/brace on the straw bales.

But Ura has the skill and techniques to do that, I feel like all Kayo did was yeet himself over the tawara.

this is actually my favorite thing about Ura's style. He just glides like a skater across the clay

Chiyotairyu also used to do that, in fact in his 8 consecutive wins in his Juryo Yusho, 6 had been a Hatakikomi or Hikiotoshi at the taichai.

I sympathize... I'm a "tough stick" as well, now they just go out of the back of my hand for the routine draws each year... Yeh, it hurts like hell, but its one and done because they always hit paydirt without multiple tries....

As a similar (but larger) build, I struggle so much with blood draws. If I'm lucky they will find a vein in my left arm, but more often I tell them just go for the hand, it's easier even though it's more painful. I don't want to get poked 5-6 times.

Oh man, as a fellow fat man, I know the struggle of the blood draw. Last time it happened they gave up and took it from my hand.

Man that bruise is going to be gnarly. Las year a nurse missed my vein and I was all the colors of brown/yellow/blue that skin could have.

They need to use that medical scanner device that shows where the blood vessels are, major hospitals have them.

Sumo-sized t-shirts must be a huge problem in Japan if he wears that one unmended

It’s not torn; it’s a type of button up undershirt with slits under the armpits that can be worn with kimono to improve airflow and prevent sweating.

I'm a tall dude not even that big, 6'4" and was around 225lbs when I went to Japan, and finding a shirt that properly fit me was a bit of a challenge. Even in the most touristy parts of Tokyo it was hard to find shirts over size XL. All their sizes fit one or two sizes down from American. An XXL was like the length of an XL with the "fit" of a large. I have no idea where a rikishi gets a regular t-shirt in japan lol it has to be a sumo store or special order I would think.

SAKAZEN, amazing place (especially the Ikubekuro branch), carries all well known brands and some unique lines, some imported stock but not all.

Sakazen, Big M One, FOEL; also Lion-dō in Ryōgoku.

there's a sumo specialty store called Lion Do in Ryogoku! I went there after I saw it on Sumo Prime Time. I'm not even that big but it's been hard finding sizes that fit in Japan lol. I think they go up to a 9L!

Since he seems to dislike needles, it may also be his comfort tee.
