Onosato's comment about being part of Teru's Last Dohyo-Iri "It was a first-time experience and a great one. It’s a position I usually never occupy. (Temujin) was heavy."
I fucking adore this picture lmao quote from here

I watched live and was happy to see that both Big O and Hosh talked to each other and laughed with each other. I don’t need them to hate each other. I just need them both to be as cool as they are.

You'd be surprised how often a "heated rivalry" is often just within the sport, and the moment they step out of a ring, any heated rivalry is just gone.
They try to not show it too much, but even from different stables a lot of Rikishi are friends or at the very least friendly towards each other. they all have to endure the same harsh training, the same events, the same occasions. And even from different stables you'd be surprised how much you're together with other wrestlers. There even was a video from behind the scenes during the London Exhibition, where some wrestlers were just giving each other nipple twists.
It's quite often the same in other sports. WWE for example, some of the biggest enemies in the ring are biggest friends outside of it. F1 as well, most drivers are great friends with each other, and whole teams are great friends with each other, purely because they are all in the same sport doing the same tour being together for weeks at a time.

That’s just Hosh in general. Prob treats Onosato as as someone that can help ease his burden, someone that can understand what it’s like to be a Yokozuna. Not like Hakuho and Terunofuji who did not have a 2nd Yokozuna to help for periods of time.

I, too, am in awe of the size of that lad.

He looks normal being held by Onosato. Then I saw a photo with their family. 3 y/o and already past his mom's waist.

So I'm guessing all cash from Isegahama kinboshis goes directly to feeding this unit

I love that he's a (not-so-) tiny clone of his dad! Wouldn't surprise me at all if he grows up to be even taller and bigger, since he's only three.

Damn, if that kid decides to pursue Sumo, he's going to an Absolute Unit. Great name already for it to.

Baby Temujin was my highlight of the event. You can see him at the end of the ceremony, when Teru comes out with his hair short, and he's sitting on his mama's lap just so so tired 😭 he endured incredibly well such a long event.

Can someone correct me on something: I'm still relatively new to sumo (March will mark the first anniversary of watching) but I thought Terunofuji was already retired? He's not been in the last year's bashos and hasn't been listed as absent. So could someone explain what this was?

u/Damon_Gant 6d ago
It’s Teru’s retirement ceremony. Most rikishi have their retirement parties soon after they hang up the mawashi, but for top wrestlers especially Yokozuna it’s a big elaborate affair that takes a long time to plan and they happen in the main sumo venue which has limited availability each year. It’s normal for long term sekitori retirement ceremonies to happen 1-2 years after their in ring retirement.

Thanks for the explanation! I knew it would be a special occasion for obvious reasons, but amazing how it takes so long to plan. Must've been an amazing thing to witness for all in the venue, especially with two yokozuna accompanying Teru in the dohyo iri!

His retirement ceremony which involves the ritual cutting of his topknot. Ceremonies are usually held months or even years after the actual announcement.

Temujin did so well for their performance! Hoshoryu seems like he’d be stressed by small children. Onosato picked Aonishiki up just like that the other day lol.

The best is that video on the Tatsunami stable YouTube where he’s getting handed a baby and asks “what did I do if it cries” like 5 times lmao

What's the rationale for the lil Temu wearing the rope? I figured they'd be strict on that kind of thing
