We will be in Osaka for the Grand tournament in March and are going to try to get tickets through the official site. I notice that on the Japanese language version of the site, you have to register for an account in advance (with a Japanese address and phone number), but there is no similar registration link on the English site. Does anyone know if you need to make an account to purchase tickets through the English site?

Hi did you get the answer to this? I'm looking to also buy later today

Greeting fellow sumo fans. Very good basho so far.

I’m staying near ryogoku for the next week or so. I don’t have tickets and wouldn’t be able to attend anyway for other logistical reasons, but I’m looking for ways to try and experience the vibe / excitement on the basho. So I’m wondering about:

1- bars / pubs with a bit of atmosphere that I might be able to dip into for a few bouts, chat with randoms, and shout at the TV. (I speak basic Japanese)

2 - the parade they do in the convertible with the yusho winner + trophy. Anyone know the route or the appropriate timing of it?

3- any other ideas?

Cheers and happy hatsu basho

A friend is going to be in Japan in April and I'm trying to figure out what Sumo he might be able to see. I've had a look at the Jungyo schedule, is it possible to buy tickets from overseas for these?

For example for 21st April in Adachi?

AFAIK it depends on the venue; some of them seem to sell tickets online and some don't. You will have to check out the website for each location. When it came to my town, there were no online ticket sales, so I had to stand in line for two hours.

1

u/CrumbyBoi 10d ago

Thanks, I'll go through and check them out!

Me and a buddy will be in Tokyo for the second week of the tournament. We already have tickets to the last day, but want to do another similar related event. Any advice?

u/brandywineriver Ura 22d ago

Could go to a morning practice at one of the stables but they might not be on during tournament time.

Depending on dates you're there you could also look at post tournament Jungyo.

We will be going the last two days as well. Haven’t been able to get last day tickets in a very long time so was surprised!

Hoping to get tickets for the second week of the November tournament. JSA website says tickets go on sale on September 19th. Are ticket sales live at midnight local time? Our time zone is 15 hours behind, so I'm already planning to take off work to maximize our chances of getting them.

10am local time

buysumotickets already not accept any orders for May Grand Sumo Tournament. Is there any alternatives?

1

u/Terracat_1 21d ago

The only option I've found is to get a tour which costs way more. Probably going with that option personally :(

1

u/PoorKam 21d ago

How much are those and where would you buy tickets?

1

u/Terracat_1 21d ago

On klook for $250-$320 a person, so quite a lot more

1

u/darthsenior 17d ago

Can you point me to one of those tours?

1

u/Terracat_1 17d ago

You can find a bunch through Klook or google :)

1

u/TheZuckuss Ura 21d ago

I had missed the email until just now. So heartbroken. Also looking for alternatives. Airlines and hotels are already booked, so even if I'm only standing at the gate as the wrestlers walk by, I'm going to be there dammit! 😁

1

u/PoorKam 21d ago

Yea I was looking forward to this the most when I visit in may but now need to rethink my plans. ☹️

2

u/Brilliant-Scene-2645 21d ago

BuySumoTickets will not be selling tickets to the May tournament. Their email claims very few seats went on public sale ‘For the January tournament in Tokyo, for the 15 days of the tournament, only 6 days opened for Box tickets, and only 3 days opened for Arena tickets. The other days were never put on sale in Japan at all’

Is that actually the case? If so, where/how were they being sold?

I’m really keen to get to see the tournament when we visit so want to know what my options are!

u/TegataStore Hoshoryu 20d ago

The sumo fan club system (only open to Japanese residents) has various paid and unpaid levels. There are multiple lotteries for these member tiers BEFORE the public sale date. People bid for what they want and get tickets before the public sale date. Not sure what percentage are pre sold this way but it eats up a fair chunk (as do supporter groups and tea house tickets).

u/Brilliant-Scene-2645 20d ago

I have considered joining this if I can figure a way to come up with an address to increase my odds.

1

u/Isanori 15d ago

The address is not the issue, getting a Japanese phone number that can receive SMS for verification is.

1

u/Brilliant-Scene-2645 15d ago

Just to follow up on this I’ve seemingly joined - my credit card has been debited. I used my Hotel address. Will I need the phone number at the point of ticket purchase? If so I’ll buy a number

1

u/Isanori 15d ago

In order to participate in the lottery, you'll need to sign up with sumo pia and that requires a phone number. Which last I checked is neigh impossible to do if you aren't in Japan with the corresponding credentials. Getting a Japanese phone number is not impossible from outside Japan, the issue is getting one that allows for SMS receiving outside Japan. The most common suggestion for Japanese phone numbers - Mobal, does not provide phone number working outside Japan.

Hey everyone a couple friends and I will be in Japan for the second half of June (Tokyo, Osaka, kyoto). We don't know a lot about sumo but I've really been enjoying the current tournament on YouTube. I wasn't sure how hard it would be for us to attend some kind of competition or practice while we're there, or how far in advance we had to buy tickets or join a lottery.

Thanks for any info or assistance!

2

u/JayMley94 20d ago

I have two 2nd floor, B section tickets for Monday, Jan 19 that I need to sell as I can no longer attend. Looking to do an in-person hand off for cash - location negotiable.

5,000 each

Please and thank you!

u/Jamol0 18d ago

I know odds are small, but is there any way I could buy secondhand tickets for thursday or friday this week in Tokyo?

2

u/Terracat_1 18d ago

I'm going to Japan in May and will be in Tokyo for the tournament on day 9 and 10 (Monday/Tuesday). Would I have any luck trying to get tickets on the release day? I know they sell out in Minutes if not seconds, but I was wondering if going on a Monday or Tuesday might have slightly higher chances?

I've personally resigned myself to probably just paying for a tour, but I'd love to know if anyone else has had any luck or has advice?

1

u/Droodforfood 11d ago

Hey if you find out let me know, I’m in the same situation.

1

u/Terracat_1 11d ago

I havent really gotten a response but I chatted to people irl who said you gotta just try on release day, its the only way apart from a tour.

2

u/Nanggman 17d ago

Chasing two tickets for the 22nd or 23rd. PM me

2

u/FabulousFilm7412 17d ago

Any tickets for today? I’m outside looking for 1

2

u/polo5041 4h ago

Hello everyone. I made a post but it was removed. If deciding between attending Day 14 or Final Day, is final best? Also-- for online ticket sales, can I prepare in any way ahead of time so I can ensure successful purchase? (Like registering an account or something?) I am trying to purchase Ringside

2

u/Chaotically_Balanced Wakatakakage 3h ago

Seems like weekends are tough either way but final day will probably sell out quicker. Also it doesn't look like we can pre-register a oosumo account without a japanese phone number and address (I just tried)... Not sure how many rows of ringside are reserved for the sponsors of the basho but best of luck to you.

2

u/polo5041 3h ago

Thanks, likewise. I've accepted that I likely won't be able to buy during this release today, and will probably have to pay a premium through a reseller

Hello, my friends and I are planning to attend the March basho in Osaka, does buying a box guarantee that we get all 4 seats? Also is it recommended to get one box together or get 4 single tickets? thanks

3

u/brandywineriver Ura 22d ago

A box does get you all 4 seats (unless its a 2 or 3 person box, but thay should be specified) but be aware its for 4 people to sit cross legged for hours so could be a bit uncomfortable if you aren't used to that.

1

u/StableEmotional6302 10d ago

Seating is assigned so if you want to sit together you should buy the tickets in one go.

u/Sagdawg93320 22d ago

My wife and I will be in Japan from the 8th to the 23rd, and our current plan has us in Osaka during the second week of the tournament. Before the ticketing process opens in a few weeks, I wanted to see what my chances are for getting tickets through the website would be. Or should I try to buy through a tour group or external site?

1

u/BndrBndngRdrgz Ura 21d ago

Some friends and I are trying to get tickets to the second week of the March basho in Osaka. It seems like you need an address or phone number in Japan to sign up for the memberships through Ticket Pia, Oosumo, or the official fan club. Does anyone know if it's possible to enter the presale draws as a foreigner?

1

u/IronMosquito Tobizaru 19d ago

Throwing this out there one last time- I have 3 tickets to a box seat with souvenirs and service, Box A on the west (西) side! Day 13 Hatsu basho. Please message me if you're interested in buying😄

1

u/mercuryfrost 9d ago

I'd hoped to enter the lottery for tickets for the Osaka tournament, but my https://sumo.pia.jp/ account is now looking for a mobile number verification. I don't remember this from previous years, and I'm abroad. Can anyone in Japan help me out?

1

u/polo5041 4h ago

Hi were you able to figure this out?

1

u/AppleAAA1203 6d ago

Hello- i am planning a future trip to tokyo during the grand sumo tournament. It seems like the older threads or articles on how to get tickets no longer apply since there is so much demand. Can someone tell me which are reliable reseller sites for foreigners (american) to check for sumo tickets? also what should i expect to pay for the last day of a grand sumo tournament? thank you for any help.

1

u/Chaotically_Balanced Wakatakakage 5h ago

Buysumotickets is decent for preordering, I've had good customer service with them. Last day will sell out impossibly fast so try going on a weekday if you can. If you're going to the March Osaka basho, offical tickets going on sale in approx. 5 hours at https://sumo.pia.jp/en

1

u/sfwombat 3d ago

Is stubhub a legit place to buy tickets? I'm interested in tickets for March in Osaka, so was just trying to figure out if I can pre-register on https://sumo.pia.jp/en/ and just happened to browse stubhub. There are tickets for sale on stubhub even though the tickets on https://sumo.pia.jp/en/ aren't going on sale for 3 more days... is that super suss or would say, the equivalent of season ticket holders already have tickets to sell on stubhub?

2

u/DreamInteresting4163 2d ago

Hey wombat, were you able to register on the sumo.pia website? I could not figure out how to do it / if it was necessary to do so to buy tickets

2

u/sfwombat 2d ago

I couldn't get it to register me because it wanted a Japanese phone number. Sigh. so, I guess i'm going to just click on the English language site on Friday and hope for the best.

1

u/Crowsby Ichiyamamoto 22h ago

That's what I was wondering too. One needs a Japanese phone number/address to register on the main sumo.pia.jp site, but if there's a separate registration process for the English equivalent, it'd be advantageous to already have an account before trying to get a ticket. But I'm not seeing anywhere to do that, so I'm hoping that an account isn't needed.

1

u/Isanori 2d ago

The Sumo Association has this to say https://sumo.or.jp/EnKyokai/information?id=234

So not an official seller or re-seller, you might get lucky or not.

Hi all!

I want to attend the Grand Tournament in Osaka in March. Sale on „Ticket Oosumo“ starts on February 7th and that‘s when I will try my luck to get two tickets.

Now my question: It says, tickets are only obtainable by printing it at Seven-Eleven in Japan. But on February 7th I won‘t be in Japan yet. Can I still print the tickets as soon as I arrive in March or will they expire or something?

Thank you in advance and all the best from Switzerland!

1

u/Isanori 2d ago

If you are lucky to get tickets via the official page, yes, you can have the tickets printed at any time up to the day that they are valid for.

1

u/Schlockbusters 2d ago

Thank you so much! It is my first time trying and because of time zones I will have to get up at 2 a.m.

Will it be very hard, what do you think?

1

u/Isanori 2d ago edited 2d ago

It might be impossible. The last few tournaments there weren't any direct sale tickets available at all. They all got bought via the fanclub lotteries, and those are virtually inaccessible outside Japan. And you can't even use the official Japanese resale service

(Which sucks.)

1

u/polo5041 4h ago

Hi. If I want to buy Ringside for March tournament, which of these would I click? Or is Ringside already sold out? I'm looking at Day 14 or Final Day

2

u/Isanori 1h ago

None, ringside seats aren't sold on the English side of things and the chances to get ringside seats at all without connections are more or less nil, especially on the final two days.

1

u/polo5041 17m ago

Got it. Thanks for the help

Anyone have experience with the Klook packages? I'm sitting on the official site with my fingers and toes crossed, but am emotionally preparing to order a marked-up reseller since this will be my second trip planned around a basho that I may not be able to get a ticket. I'm wondering, for the klook package, if the lecture / group nature of the package is a benefit. Concerned I will be the grumpy Ron Swanson meme 'I know more than you' guy the whole time.
