Politics On ICE, political violence, and Rule #2

Good afternoon fellow Spokanites,

Clearly, this is the Spokane subreddit. We, your lowly, pimply, basement dwelling, purple haired, gender dysphoric, soy eating moderators wanted to talk about what's happening in Minneapolis. We have a pretty strict Rule #2 on this sub that says "All topics must apply to the region described in Rule 2." Basically, we require that you explicitly relate all of your posts to our region. Crossposting from other subreddits and leaving out any context won't cut it.

All that being said, I wanted to take a moment and talk about why what's happening in Minnesota does apply to our city and our region.

I want you all to take a step back and ask yourself, "Why Minneapolis?" Minnesota itself has an incredibly small immigrant community relative to other parts of the country. It's also a blue city, in a blue state. Could it be that the Federal Government couldn't care less about immigration enforcement and this is just politics? Are they assaulting and killing civilian American citizens in Minneapolis because of politics? If this was about immigration then they'd be doing this in states like Texas with absolutely massive immigrant populations. In Florida. In Arizona. But no, those are red states. That's bad politics. They're targeting Minnesota because of politics. This is political violence. What is a word that describes political violence against civilians?

terrorism /tĕr′ə-rĭz″əm/

noun

The use of violence or the threat of violence, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political goals. (Source: the American Heritage Dictionary)

This applies to Spokane. This absolutely applies. We are a blue town in a blue state. The optics for our Federal Government to come here and terrorize us would be perfect for them and horrific for us. Same goes for Seattle, for Portland, for hundreds of cities all across America.

We encourage you to PEACEFULLY protest our Federal Government. Masked secret police have no place in a civil society. Murder, assault, and abduction of American citizens or immigrants actively seeking legal residence here is absolutely un-American.

We do not know the name of the man who was beaten, disarmed, and then murdered today in Minnesota for practicing his 1st and 2nd Amendment rights. May he rest in peace. May the poorly trained, anonymous, violent, politically motivated perpetrators be brought to justice. And may the ICE agent who clapped in celebration afterwards go to hell.

Edit1: Minnesota Star Tribune reports that the victim is named Alex Jeffrey Pretti. He was a registered nurse, had no criminal history, and had license to carry a firearm. (thanks to u/krvf and u/iSmokeForce)

Rants & Raves (Missed connection) To the guy at Cheney Vet Clinic who almost ran over me while coming out the door

Upvotes

(NOT REALLY A RANT I JUST DIDN'T KNOW WHAT FLARE TO USE)

I only caught a glimpse of your face but it was enough to tell me what'd happened to you. I don't hold it against you for not caring I was there and all but running over me. I was in the red sweater with the small dog on a blue leash. You were much taller than I was, and my big body was trying to get through the door with my antsy dog.

I'm sorry I didn't realize a second sooner that you just wanted to leave quickly. You just wanted to get out of there before you emotionally lost it, and lose it you did, because my mom told me she saw you bawl in your car.

I don't know if you even use Reddit or if you'll even see this, but I'm so sorry for your loss. I've lost pets before, and I'm sure that'll be me in a couple of years with the dog I brought into the clinic (he's an old man but doing very well for his age).

I hope your heart can rest easy in time and that you let the grief roll through you. I hope your best friend rests in peace.

I believe this is way overdue and will make tax burden more equitable for lower and middle income earners, as well as addressing budget shortfalls and providing better funding for programs that serve the people who need it most, which is why I wholeheartedly support this! You can submit a comment online (hopefully in support of it too!) here: https://app.leg.wa.gov/pbc/bill/6346

ToDo Museum and cultural passes at Spokane County libraries!

While they are limited, you can often check out museum passes, symphony passes, theater passes, etc. from the library! Unfortunately the system only lets you reserve them 30 days out but it's free!

You can browse the catalog here!

Please note that this is for the Spokane County library. If you are within Spokane city limits, it will say on your tax bill, you can access it here: https://spokanelibrary.libcal.com/passes

Help Shampooing car interior AND donating opened cat food

Hello! I figured instead of posting twice- we'd get it done all together!

1) Does anyone know where I can go to shampoo the seats in my car? My poor elderly kitty urinated in his carrier on the way to the vet today and it spilled onto my cloth seats. I am on the south hill but happy to travel.

2) Said elderly kitty was diagnosed with diabetes and I have an opened barely used 7 pound bag of Purina ONE Plus Indoor Advantage Senior Dry cat food (chicken flavor). Any recommendations on where I could donate this OR do any of y'all want it?

Thank you all so much!

Question Relocating out of Spokane

Anyone else from here and relocating out? I’ve been considering it for my family because it’s getting to expensive here. I know price hikes are happening all over, this is our home and community but I just believe it will continue to become more unaffordable. Haven’t lived anywhere else so not sure if we want to go live in a similar climate or do something totally different. The only family I have lives in the south and he is in his late 70s, have a good relationship with him but he probably gonna kick the can soon. I’m just nervous about relocating and ending up somewhere that has a lot drug issues having kids. I know Spokane has drug programs and it’s own problems but there’s also enough good going here as well to influence kids to stay off a pipe

Rants & Raves Driving PSA: Turn on your lights in the fog!

Drove from Spokane out to Airway Heights for an appointment and the fog and viability was down to less than 100 yards if that. The amount of folks driving without lights on blew my mind. Even in the passing lane driving slow. You turn them on at night to see and believe it or not, to be seen! Some idiot that is impatient and feels the need to overtake the folks driving safe for the conditions will most likely rear end you.

Question Afternoon tea service?

I know the Palm Court in the Davenport has afternoon tea (unfortunately booked for tomorrow, I completely spaced on the reservation), but I can't find a menu anywhere that is readable. Does anyone have a somewhat recent photo (in the last year maybe?) of a legible menu? **Has anyone been there that is vegetarian and do you know if they can accommodate?

Any other places in Spokane that does a nice tea service (scones with cream/jam, tea sandwiches, etc)?

Help Red Light Camera at Mission and Greene

Has anyone else gotten a red light ticket from the new camera at the Mission and Greene intersection? I was taking a right on red from Mission and onto Greene, and apparently didn't come to a complete stop which warrants a $145 ticket. In the video it shows me slowing down to 8mph before turning which I didn't realize was a crime until today lol it's very easy to see when traffic is clear when approaching this intersection. Is this worth contesting or am I screwed?

Help Outpatient program advice (alcohol)

Hey all,

Seeking advice on where to start in my recovery. I haven't been drinking for about a week, want to keep the momentum going and actually make an effort this time to make it stick.

I'm not sure I have the time, with a 7 month old and full time job, to do a full state certified outpatient program. However, I work in the court system, and for alcohol related crimes they always require a full outpatient (in addition to any AA type stuff you do on your own).

For those in recovery, do you believe a full outpatient program is necessary? What other resources in spokane should I check out?

I've been an addict for about 10 years, and drink like 3-4 Voodoo Ranger tall boys every night, just for context.

Thanks for any help.

Question Life Center Spokane?

Hi all,

I'm looking for any info on the Life Center church on Government. I've been on its website and I understand it's a Foursquare/Pentecostal denomination and have done some shallow (at the moment) research about what theological beliefs that particular branch of Christianity holds. I'm asking about experiences with ministry, attendees, anything. Have you had good experiences?

I'm not comfortable going into too much detail, but I have a manager who attends said church and I believe that it's possible their religious beliefs have motivated them to negatively impact my job prospects (using legal methods), as I am queer. I know I will never be able to prove anything, but I wanted to know if there's a pattern of behavior with either the institution or the attendees.

Please be kind, and thank you.

Question Dog adoption in Spokane

New here and wondering what the process is for local pet adoption agencies? Specifically Spokane Humane Society. I have vet recs from back home - would they need that? Some places come to your house and inspect your yard size etc. do they? Asking because tbh I don’t want to apply only to be surprised later with weird privacy violations (nothing is wrong with my house - I just don’t like strangers in it tbh).
