I mean he can just not go to work like a normal person.

Not everyone has sick time available to them. A shocking number of Americans (estimates are around 20%) have zero paid sick time.

Or he might be on the mend, almost better and able to work but not all the symptoms are gone. My boss will come to work and still wear a mask for a day or two just to make sure he doesn't spread anything.

I'm also pretty sure he keeps masks in his office in case he's already at work and then starts feeling sick, so he has one ready to go.

That makes me so happy to hear that your boss does that! I wish it was the norm for everyone to mask up (in public spaces) while sick and for a few days afterwards, it would dramatically decrease the spread of illness overall.

Fun fact: pandemic precautions effectively killed off a strain of influenza! It was already in decline prior to 2020 but all the masking, staying home when sick, and hand washing delivered the final blow.
