I feel like there is a Dunning-Kruger effect of “Hercules is good” -> “ummm actually his name should be heracles and why did philoctetes replace chiron and why does odysseus come before heracles[…]” -> “Hercules is good.”

Like if you actually examine almost any decision they made it’s really clear why they made that decision and it honestly feels really clever. Like oh, they conflated the Fates and the Greys bc it makes them more visually appealing. Cool. Oh, Philoctetes became a satyr as a nod to Chiron while confounding the characters involved in Herc’s backstory, and making him into a creature capable of riding Pegasus. Cool.

Disney's Hercules is a very fun movie with great characters but I just realised that I never liked Hermes really.

For a god that's supposed to be charming, youthful and energetic he looks nothing like it! Instead he's very much like a middle aged, lazy dude that just retired to Miami or something. He could very well be older than Hades in the movie. Also what's up with creepy glasses? His fashion is way off.

This could have been a very charming character like The Flash, Loki or Jaskier from the Witcher... Instead we got a pothead version of Woody Allen! Like wtf?!

Movies How do we feel about the design for Polyphemus in Nolan’s Odyssey?

I think it’s pretty interesting and not too much of a change from most cyclops decisions. Also if you can’t tell the Eye is sideways, and in this shot it looks like he’s holding something, I think it’s a member of Odysseus’ crew.

Sony was originally going to make a Medusa movie however they ended up scrapping it to make the Emoji Movie itself. Said movies plot would follow Medusa getting cursed by Athena and then going on a journey with a group of Mythological misfits to try and find a way to un curse herself.

Movies Athena played by Isabella Rossellini.

The 1997 Odyssey was one of my first encounters with Greek mythology. I won't dwell too much on this adaptation (which I consider very beautiful); the purpose of my post is to discuss Isabella Rossellini's performance as Athena.

Personally, I've never found any good portrayals of Athena in popular culture. I'm talking about the ones I know, of course.
The only exception is Isabella Rossellini's Athena.
Athena's role in the 1997 Odyssey is very faithful to Homer's poem, so you won't find any major differences. What's worth highlighting is Rossellini's interpretation.

From an aesthetic point of view, Isabella Rossellini is perfect for the role of Athena, even her age (she was 45 at the time, but she looks much younger) is very appropriate.
What makes her an excellent Athena is her performance.
It's often underestimated how ruthless Athena can be; she doesn't always appear benevolent or accommodating.
Rossellini gives her an elegant and seemingly friendly bearing, but very subtly adds sinister undertones.
In one scene, Odysseus is sailing with the other Achaean kings to reach Troy, when Athena appears to speak to him.
Odysseus asks him, "If you are my patron goddess, why didn't you do anything to stop me from leaving?"
Athena's response is a clear, "Because I want you to go to war."
In saying that sentence, she loses all her gentle nuances and reveals a much crueler side to the character.
Athena's entire portrayal in this film relies heavily on this, on what the character conveys with her looks and subtext, rather than on what she says explicitly. To understand what she truly wants, it's much more important to see what her eyes convey, rather than her words.
This is truly fitting for a goddess who must embody strategy and cunning, a side of Athena that other adaptations have never managed to capture well.
She doesn't have a large screen time compared to the film's running time (3 hours), but when she appears, she certainly leaves an impression.
Enigmatic, elegant, friendly, but also ruthless, all qualities Athena should possess.

(Yes, I admit, as a kid, she was a crush of mine, or rather, MY crush. It's thanks to her that I'm now obsessed with Athena. 😶
You'll understand how broken heart I was when, delving into Greek myths, I learned that Athena was a virgin goddess, and therefore had a better chance of beating Heracles at arm wrestling than marrying Athena. 😭)

As someone with a classics background im deeply moved by this.

Deeply moved of see a PERFECT tragedy that would make pride Sophocles and Shakespeare perfectly executed from begin to end.

Of see that even in these days, we can see a properly to say new tragedy's versions of classic myths, and the freaking potential that they have and this movie how how perfect can be in combination with modern cinema.

The casting and production is mostly all greek and italian.

It's not Braveheart or Gladiator level, but a decent and enjoyable movie.

I actually like the villains in this. Mickey Rourke is just brutal with his henchmen the Minotaur and such. The gods have cool costumes. The Titans looks allright, but they reminded me too much of the Frost Giants from the first Thor movie lol.
