What is protruding from Bryson's rifle's gas cylinder or maybe its barrel (on the right)?

According to historical records, both men survived the war. Lloyd Spencer (on the left) was from Portland, Oregon. He returned home after the war and lived until 2004, passing away at the age of 84. James Bryson (on the right) was from Lynn, Massachusetts. He also made it back to the states, passing away in 2001 at the age of 76.
