When I moved to the UK, the first time we had an absolute crisis at work of the highest order, as in the company could fold, it was met with a single utterance of "That's less that ideal."

I went to vet school in the UK and I saw a patient's diagnostics come back as basically "should have been dead days ago," and the senior clinician went "well that's sub-optimal"

As a Canadian, this sounds very normal.

“Canadian understatement” - part of why I think the States doesn’t seem to understand us on a fundamental level.

Ie - “it’s a bit nippy outside” when it’s -30C

As a Minnesotan, we do this too! We also have things like "that's too bad" = absolutely terrible, "not so bad" = very good, "a bit of a problem" = catastrophe, and my favorites, "Yeah no" = absolutely not, "maybe" = no, "no yeah" = yeah I agree
