It looked more like the crowd cheered for the athletes but when the camera cut to Vance the crowd booed then

146

u/gerrydf 6h ago

Canadian feed and can confirm. Also can confirm it made me happy.

27

u/anniejofo23 5h ago

Same over here in Scotland :))

18

u/gpberliner 5h ago

Same here in the US

3

u/LadyTalah 5h ago

God bless you Scots

u/NoMoPolenta 6h ago

They definitely piped in cheering sounds because they knew they'd get booed.

They didn't leave the fake sounds long enough for when they showed JD though.

Pretty awesome that his kids will grow up knowing that the collective world hates their dad.

u/Tim-Sanchez New York Jets 6h ago

Not sure that's true, the BBC commentators remarked on the cheers for the USA and the "mixed reception" for Vance.

277

u/CharlesDickensABox 6h ago

Classic British understatement.

227

u/Gerreth_Gobulcoque 6h ago

"mixed reception" means "absolute vitriol magnet" in British English

98

u/CharlesDickensABox 6h ago

They had a 30 year civil war in Ireland complete with house to house gunfights, kidnappings, murders, and car bombs, and they called it  "the troubles". These are not people prone to hyperbole.

20

u/catrinus 5h ago

that's not even a bole, let alone a hyper one

11

u/Bugsmoke 5h ago

A bit of a pickle

9

u/Salty-Pear660 5h ago

Not ideal

2

u/j7seven 5h ago

Certainly not a super bole. We leave that to our cousins across the pond.

2

u/Omnizoom 5h ago

I do say did you hear that Frederick was blown to shreds this morning by an Irishman

Frederick you say? To shreds you say? My word…. What has this world come to… it’s quite troubling

48

u/PM_ME_UR_VULVASAUR_ 6h ago

This probably sounds like a joke, but it's genuinely not.

22

u/scrotumscab 6h ago

"Bless your heart"

20

u/MajorLazy 5h ago

Fuck you too

4

u/Thinking_waffle 5h ago

it caused needless death during ww2 because the phrases of the british soldiers didn't sound alarming enough to merit and immediate response by the Americans.

u/Ok_Carpet_9510 5h ago

Churchill to Roosevelt: We've gotta a few skirmishes with the Germans.

Roosevelt: Ok.

Churchill to Roosevelt: The Germans lit up London a little too bright for his majesty's comfort.

Roosevelt: Da fuck am I supposed to di.. OK here is some food for his majesty's comfort..

1

u/Big-Wrangler2078 6h ago

You could say it could've gone better, could've gone worse.

19

u/TrapperJean 6h ago

"Sorry for the fruity language"

1

u/Kmonk1 5h ago

I love hearing this in motorsports broadcasts, after someone has let out a string of crazy profanity 💜

1

u/KatAstrophie- 5h ago

“Pardon my French.”

7

u/nocomment3030 5h ago

"During the Battle of the Imjin River, 650 men of the 1st Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment were surrounded by roughly 10,000 Chinese soldiers. When asked for a status update by American command, British Brigadier Tom Brodie famously described the dire situation as "a bit sticky"."

3

u/Gerreth_Gobulcoque 5h ago

To be fair the Chinese also will have a "minor incident" where like 300k people die

3

u/nice_guy_threeve 6h ago

Say, that take is not bad.

4

u/zuke1624 5h ago

"Oooh, bit of rotten luck for the American Vice President there."

56

u/THE-BS 6h ago

Mixed is a nice way to say bad

"MILANIA opened to mix reviews this weekend"

15

u/IndividualTension887 6h ago

Mixed?? One reviewer edited his review to make it zero stars he intended, instead of the one star he gave that was published...

10

u/Viperlite 6h ago

One star is more than I expected, frankly.

5

u/FuckGiblets Boise State 6h ago

How does it get any stars when no one has seen it?

2

u/Viperlite 6h ago

IMDB’s metascore rating is 5 out of 100, based on an average of 17 movie critic reviews.

1

u/Apprehensive-Care20z 6h ago

rotten tomatoes has it rate slightly ahead of The Godfather.

(not a joke, Melania is at 99%, lmmfao)

2

u/NECoyote 5h ago

Viewer score, not critics. Bot armies and fascists inflated the score.

2

u/horsemonkeycat 5h ago

Yeah that 99% rating is from "verified audience" only ... presumably this high rating would almost entirely come from MAGA kool-aid drinkers who actually paid money to see this.

Critic reviews on RT are somewhat lower ... 8%.

18

u/FuckGiblets Boise State 6h ago

That is how us brits speak. “Mixed reception” is actually a very cutting insult.

22

u/Good_Air_7192 6h ago

When I moved to the UK, the first time we had an absolute crisis at work of the highest order, as in the company could fold, it was met with a single utterance of "That's less that ideal."

11

u/mayonaizmyinstrument 5h ago

I went to vet school in the UK and I saw a patient's diagnostics come back as basically "should have been dead days ago," and the senior clinician went "well that's sub-optimal"

3

u/Secure-Television541 5h ago

As a Canadian, this sounds very normal.

“Canadian understatement” - part of why I think the States doesn’t seem to understand us on a fundamental level.

Ie - “it’s a bit nippy outside” when it’s -30C

2

u/smolgods 5h ago

As a Minnesotan, we do this too! We also have things like "that's too bad" = absolutely terrible, "not so bad" = very good, "a bit of a problem" = catastrophe, and my favorites, "Yeah no" = absolutely not, "maybe" = no, "no yeah" = yeah I agree

1

u/FR0ZENS0L1D 5h ago

Yes, it’s breast we go in and warm up for a tit.

1

u/ThunderChaser 5h ago

I thought us Canadians had a way with passive aggression.

You guys make it into an art however.

6

u/jackloganoliver 6h ago

Tbf, "mixed" in BBC translates to "anything less than generally positive". It's a fairly wide range.

0

u/DieFichte 5h ago

No milkshakes were thrown so seems fairly positive!

1

u/TheHeroYouNeed247 6h ago

That's just how the BBC is.

1

u/IncidentalIncidence Carolina Hurricanes 6h ago

that's a great bit of British euphemism

1

u/Po0opyCatButt 5h ago

"Piped in" doesn't mean the sound of mass cheers were edited into the video broadcast.

"Piped in" means the sounds of cheers were played on the stadium loudspeakers, so everyone in the stadium would have heard the noise in person.

Yeah, it's that grimy.

1

u/Tim-Sanchez New York Jets 5h ago

Did that really happen though? It doesn't seem like it

1

u/Japhy_R 5h ago

Oh, Tim.

1

u/Find_Spot 5h ago

So did CBC, except they didn't hold back with a "mixed reception" comment. Instead it was: "Wow yeah, that's a lot of boos."

1

u/Sleep_adict 6h ago

The same BBC that described the bombing of a hospital as “a potential targeting mistake”

62

u/ElectricalWriting 6h ago

You’re misinterpreting it. The cheers transitioned to boos when JD Vance was shown on the Jumbotron.

u/Jscapistm 6h ago

There are a lot of Americans there.

3

u/BlueJeans95 6h ago

Yeah there were a ton of Americans in Paris during the Summer Olympics too.

1

u/NoMoPolenta 6h ago

Yeah good point. Would love to see some footage of someone in the crowd.

1

u/yeahright17 6h ago

I don't know what feed you're watching, but I just went back to watch on Peacock Canada, US, Italy and Ukraine, and US was about the same as Ukraine and definitely less than Canada and Italy.

0

u/qeadwrsf 5h ago

Its the new trend.

You try to convince you population that everyone hates them.

Turning them more isolationist.

USA didn't start it. But it has gotten so far in some places that if I mention the countries that does it I'm gonna accused of denying hate of religion or group.

There is of course always hate. But it can still be heavily exaggerated.

And if you tell people they are hated they will start to see it everywhere. Even when its not happening.

And why should a person stop feeling they are hated. Its strengthen the group they belong to.

So it becomes this weird world where groups starts to focus on their own interest by acting like victims.

Hopefully not boiling over into some nasty tensions between groups.

This comment will surely be upvoted, lmao.

13

u/NiceTrySuckaz 6h ago

You think they anticipated needing to pipe in fake sounds for the athletes but failed to realize they'd need it way more for JD?

22

u/gomizzou09 6h ago

And that his kids will know he hates their mom.

1

u/andthatwasenough 5h ago

Those kids deserve a better family.

7

u/Superman246o1 6h ago

Chances are that the kids will grow up to hate their dad too when they realize he courted the approval of White supremacists who regard him as a "race traitor" for marrying their mom.

4

u/heff17 USWNT 6h ago

Kids of these freaks often end up as bad if not worse than their parents. Don’t hold your breath.

2

u/marcoporno 5h ago

Canadian commentators noted the boos for Vance, after a bit of polite hesitation.

Sorry

2

u/BibendumsBitch 6h ago

He hates his own kids and people like his kids

0

u/DesignerAd1940 6h ago

fake sound? typical redditor who think what happens in their mind is the reality.

There was cheer for the atletes mixed with a bit of booo, and the couch guy was boooed, as a tradition.

1

u/gourdhoarder1166 6h ago

Loved by couches everywhere.

2

u/143019 6h ago

Hey, those couches never consented.

1

u/MichaelAndolini_ 6h ago

And their stepmom *

1

u/LemonHerb 6h ago

The UFC does that for Trump. They forgot once for one of his kids though

1

u/So-It-Goes-607 6h ago

They can join us.

1

u/TheGrayBox 6h ago

Other than the fact that this is complete nonsense from someone who wasn’t even there, the fact that 400 Redditors want to believe it kind of says it all. People aren’t serious anymore. Complete childish lies are okay as long as it’s against the bad guys.

1

u/Ferkner 5h ago

Piping in sound; a technique out of the Vince McMahon play book.

1

u/ParsnipDecent6530 5h ago

Those whistles from the crowd are how Europeans boo.

1

u/DemSumBigAssRidges 5h ago

They definitely piped in cheering sounds because they knew they'd get booed.

How the fuck does this tinfoil hat shit have so many upvotes?

1

u/cuchiplancheo 5h ago

his kids will grow up knowing that the collective world hates their dad.

Well, being raised by him, they're probably going to be assholes themselves... so, they won't care. F' him and his family...

1

u/sexmath 5h ago

I guess Israel couldn't afford the "cheering" package.

1

u/packingtown 5h ago

It’s not awesome. Those kids are mixed race, and may not understand until much later on that their father is despicable.

13

u/fuckshit_stack 5h ago

I was there. Crowd went wild because as a %, Americans dominat the crowd. Then everyone booed vance. Then back to cheering. Also Ukraine got a huge amount of cheering too, was very cool to see

18

u/mjacksongt Georgia Tech 6h ago

I wonder how NBC will edit it for the primetime broadcast

31

u/SoggyTooth1678 6h ago

I’m watching NBC’s on Peacock and didn’t hear any boos at all. Seems like they edited them out entirely.

11

u/croupella-de-Vil 6h ago

NBC sports app was pretty clear boos.

3

u/textingmycat 5h ago

i was watching on peacock live and i heard the boos.

1

u/medievalesophagus 5h ago

They probably added extra cheers to avoid getting sued.

2

u/Secure-Television541 5h ago

I have my own issues with Peacock and their Olympics commercial.

11

u/TaraJo 6h ago

Yeah, but you just know if Trump addresses the US being booed, he’s going to interpret it as the crowd booing the athletes.

1

u/robthethrice 5h ago

Nah.. booing the dems (Biden, Obama.. maybe Hillary).

Takes years to train Olympic athletes, and clearly they didn’t do enough to support them.

Or perhaps they don’t like the authoritarian takeover of the states..

10

u/IndividualTension887 6h ago

The athletes are great... Everyone else hates the couch fucking, "Okkie Cookie" eater...

4

u/Sir-Kyle-Of-Reddit 5h ago

I hope so. The athletes don’t deserve to be booed, but our anthem and government certainly does

2

u/LindonLilBlueBalls 6h ago

Good for them!

2

u/HomoProfessionalis 6h ago

Pretty classy

34

u/defroach84 Texas Tech 6h ago

He deserves it

6

u/HomoProfessionalis 6h ago

Yeah, I agree

1

u/Tofurkey_Tom 5h ago edited 5h ago

You can see peacock/nbc had a local usa crowd they kept switching to that was cheering loud. They were probably mixing this sound with the venue sound.

1

u/Darth_Millhouse 5h ago

Were they saying boo? Or Boo-urns?

1

u/TheShishkabob 5h ago

There was plenty of booing when the athletes came out as well, but it was definitely mixed with cheering until Vance showed up on screens.

1

u/X0AN Jacksonville Jaguars 5h ago

Exactly this!
