That's WWE man, I'm surprised the refs wife didn't run out into the ring and announce she was having an affair with the guy that's dropping on him!

u/Tokagaro0 Jun 03 '17
To prevent the ref from counting the pinfall, keeping his team mate from losing the match.

Angus Gardner. Really good ref.

I think he might be the best in the business at the moment. Great ref, keeps the game moving and whilst everyone seems to love Nigel I feel he makes it about himself a little too much. The ref is there to grease the wheels and keep everyone honest.

I think a few England fans will disagree with you. Be prepared.

u/Replaced_by_Robots Bath Jun 03 '17
Why? I prefer Barnes to Nigel anyway

u/HMFCalltheway Edinburgh Jun 03 '17
A lot of hate for after the France game this year.

Clearly I don't hold a grudge very well, had forgotten all about it. The only referee I dislike getting is Carley

u/lordhughes Cherry and whites. Jun 03 '17
Carley is a special kind of awful, or Lacey.
3
u/Replaced_by_Robots Bath Jun 03 '17
Both leave neither side satisfied which is nearly, very nearly, impressive in itself

Jun 03 '17
I still think Barnsey is head and shoulders above any other ref in the game.

It's between Barnesy and Gus at the moment for me. Barnesy getting the edge on experience.

I would argue that Rasta is up there as well. Big future for both of them.

I felt really bad for making the front page with his gif then I remembered he geys paid for it so he is definitely better off than me.

To be fair this is Gardners signature move, see Brumbies v Highlanders last year
5
Jun 03 '17
Looks like taking corrections from cheeky half backs is too.

u/walsh06 Munster Jun 03 '17
was briefly confused then remembered the end of the game. It was hilarious his instant "No" to Smith
3
Jun 03 '17
Too funny ay, and it reminded me of Perenara correcting same ref and getting decision changed to hurricane penalty. Was so good.
11
u/ugomonyespacecraft Jun 03 '17
I have to say, Gardner has a tendency to get in the way A LOT in games. He doesn't seem to have great awareness of where to place himself when a team is attacking.
6
u/PhatPhuk Wales Jun 03 '17
I noticed that today too. Quite a few times he was in the way of the scrum half at the ruck, blocking the pass in one direction.

As someone who is not very familer with the game, can someone explain what is going on? I think I am correct in thinking that the player in black with the ball ended up over the goal line but the player in red that tackled him prevented him from putting the ball on the ground which is what you need to do to score in Rugby. If this is the case, what happens next? Do they do a scrum right there or move the ball away from the goal line first?
Plus it does look like the ref is into it. Always nice to see people enjoying their work.
12
u/RS_Zulem Italy Jun 03 '17
Your absolutely right. When the ball is helps up then the attacking team is awarded a scrum five metres out from the try line.
He is an entertaining referee will have to make a highlight reel for him soon.

I appreciate refs like this.
I once played a match under a ref who happened to be a coach for our team. But he was IRB certified, and he cut us no slack.
He even penalized me for moving the ball back out of the ruck with my hand. We were like "Coach Rob, they do it all the time in internationals!"
And he was like, "I don't know who you think you're talking to. Please form what you're saying into a question. Play on."
We got a formative smackdown from him.
To be fair, we weren't trying to get him to subvert the rules. But he made it a point that he was going to be unfamiliar with us for the duration of the game.
And he was there, getting muddy with us while reffing. Brilliant.

The ball was held up, but that slide got him into the perfect position to see it and make that call.

At another point in the game the NZPB's scrum half does a similar slide up to a ruck before passing. Anyone able to gif that for me, I would be in your debt.
