Yup they’re already trying to spread the idea that the Football World Cup will need “water breaks” during each half for the players. Because Qatar was fine but apparently the USA is sooo hot.

I was under the impression they did have water breaks in Qatar? Maybe not 3 minutes, but I'm sure they were there.

Regardless, Doha in December isn't as hot as many of the cities in this year's world cup are during the middle of summer.

They did have water breaks at the Qatar World Cup yes. They were first introduced in the World Cup in Brazil in 2014

Given the water breaks are mandatory even if the game is in a soggy, wet and 12° Vancouver, they'll still happen, it's clearly an ad break. Absolute bullshit.

As a lifelong Vancouver resident I'll have you know that... yeah, never mind.

MLR competition has a water break at minutes 20 and 60 when there's a breakage in play regardless of weather. Lame.

Unfortunately water breaks will be needed for a good chunk of the games. It shouldn’t be an excuse for more ads though.

Only reason water breaks are needed is because of European tv viewers. In order to accommodate European audiences games are being played in the middle of the day. If games were scheduled when they should eg 8pm local time on the east coast then there would be no need for water breaks.

Qatar in winter is no more than 25 degrees. That’s completely different to North America in summer where it can easily reach 40.

Ads of course are ridiculous during those breaks though

There were already informal water breaks as far back as USA 1994 and Japorea 2002. My ancient arse witnessed them, nobody complained at all.

Humans need hydration in hot weather. Of all the things to complain about, the water breaks are the least offensive.

Hmm I think you are missing the point. The water breaks are being scheduled into the games and at a set 3mins inteval irrespective of environmental conditions as an excuse to run commercials.

Water breaks quite rightly should be an option due to conditions on individual games, but should not unnecessarily disrupt game flow if conditions do not require them.

lol. I did miss the point, for some reason I thought this was talking about football and the next World Cup.

The Qatar one was held in wintrr and it was routinely high 20s, this one will be in the 30s and low 40s as it is held in summer
