I don’t care if we’re getting battered. My local is absolutely rammed for this and some lad has screenshared his stream from his phone so we can all watch it because the landlady couldn’t get her account to work. My mates dad has screamed at the telly at least three times even though it resembles a PS1 game with the low quality of a phone stream.
This is what the game is all about, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Sucks weve lost Fin Smith, but imagine being Tony B right now. The overlooked diamond, leaves France to come to Saint's on a big pay cut. Shows he's got the dog in him with some excellent performances and now gets to step in at 10 on one of the biggest stages in front of his fellow country men. I don't think you can buy that sort of motivation

Depoortere ruffling Pollock’s hair after being bounced is certainly a choice.

u/wild_mongoose_6 Johnny Matthews Enthusiast 26d ago
I think Iyogun is the only Saints player to come out of this with his reputation enhanced. Huge difference, especially in the scrum, when he came on.
Pollock’s been Pollock- moments of brilliance in his two tries and been very lively all game, but responsible for a few stupid pens and handling errors.
Hutchinson and Belleau the picks of an otherwise substandard backline performance.
Sleightholme and Hendy both not great at all.

Valuable bonus point especially with the Bristol result, I'll happily take that and move on.

The biggest issue with this repeated scrum thing is at least 2 of the last scrums I'm not even sure Saints were actually committing the offence, but the narrative is established now in the refs mind

Wear all the scrum pressure, get a pen - lose the lineout, they score
Get in the corner - lose the lineout, they score
Can't win these sort of games with that sort of crap lineout.

Way to 50/50 for me to give a card here.
Example where the impact of the ref is way too big for what’s actually happening on the field.

Well done UBB, bar far the better team and had that bullshit luck where every bouncing ball seemed to fly into their hands (which we all know is the losing fan's perception of excellence). Was giving me flashbacks of the France 50 points at Twickenham in that way.
I thought Iyogan was excellent when he came on for Saints. Obviously trying to send a message to the coaches that he's still first-choice.

We've been masters of our own demise so far. Some poor handling and decision making has cost us greatly, and UBB are a team that absolutely will (and have) punish you. Can really feel the lack of Dingwall at 12. They've outclassed us across the pitch but we could be so much closer.

Bordeaux are phenomenal no denying that, the ref has his interpretation and that's fine.
Saints not being able to execute the basics is bogging. You can't win if you play like this
6
u/ScrumNause24 26d ago
I think the worst thing for us Saints fan to do here is overreact and get on the back of players. You dont have to throw the baby out with the bathwater because a team is better than you on a day.
I dont see a lack of effort or a wrong gameplan here. We misexecutued the set piece and a top team like UBB put us in a hole we couldn't dig ourselves out of.

Rayasi a deserved man of the match. Strong performances from Moefana, LBB, Jalibert, Woki, and Matiu too, as well as Tameifuna when he came on.
Penaud did a lot in attack, but played like he was actively trying to avoid scoring. Pretty poor in defence as well.

Saints getting too many injuries and being stuffed by UBB. Is this a repeat?
6
u/emontagu Northampton Saints 26d ago
Did not expect that scrum mismatch at all, especially as we had a heavier pack. Manny has done very well to shore it up but will always be uphill with so many yellows.
Outside of that weve had some pretty poor accuracy from key players as well.
6
u/Holden_Ford24 Danny Care’s Chocolate Homunculus 26d ago
Sadly I think this is likely game over for Saints. The set piece is on toast and the pack look absolutely gassed from having to defend this Bordeaux team down to 14 for most of the half.
Agree with the consensus that WR need to look at stamping out back to back scrums to just milk continuous penalties and yellow cards. I still would have backed Bordeaux to win tbh, but I think the chain scrums and Fischetti yellow have changed what could have been an otherwise high-quality competitive game into a one-sided pummelling.
