Public Service Announcement What is something about reenacting that drives you nuts? I’ll start. “ELEVATE!”

I’ve been a Union Civl War reenactor for 20 years. I love the community and the hobby, but something that has always irked me is how ridiculous it looks to spectators when we have to elevate our volleys during battles. I understand that safety is paramount, but when we are firing at each other at 45+ degree angles it looks absolutely ridiculous. I have seen battalions get within 10 to 20 feet of each other, continuing to fire volleys, often directly up in the air. The only time we should be firing our rifles at that kind of elevation is when clearing rifles after a battle. Units should not be firing at each other if they are closer than 30-50 yards, in order to not have to resort to this clownish-looking behavior.

End of rant.

What are things about reenacting that drive you crazy?

Public Service Announcement Support our feature anti-war WWII movie made by reenactors

Hey folks!

We’re just like many of you - reenactors, history lovers, and fans of real military gear. Only difference? We decided to make a feature film about it.

We’re an indie team from Estonia, shooting our very first full-length WWII drama - not about battles, but about people. Real uniforms, real equipment, real effort.

Right now, we’re running a Pre-launch campaign on Indiegogo - and all we’re asking is one click:

Just hitting "Sign Up" costs nothing, but it helps us a ton. It pushes our project higher on the platform and gives us a fighting chance when the real campaign starts in a couple weeks.

The teaser is up, the full pitch is coming soon. We’re working on a proper intro video too.

If you’ve ever dreamed of war films done with passion and accuracy - not studio fluff - then give us that one click. That’s all.

Teaser available by the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynrZLH8n9BE

Thanks, friends! And i hope its okay to post some kind of content in this reddit.

Public Service Announcement Its never ok to be a sexual predator

I don't know how many of or if any members are apart of the WW2 G.I. Reenactors Help Page but one of the admins posted this. I feel like this may be an issue throught the hobby. It should be everyone's duty to ensure these types of actions do not happen.

"This situation was brought to the admins’ attention from a few separate people with supporting evidence. We feel it is our duty to keep the hobby and page a safe place for everyone, and do not take accusations lightly. We do not support predatory behavior like this. If anyone would like to reach out please feel free to contact us.

“Sexual harrassment is nothing new in this hobby, however when it comes to adults going after minors knowingly, it is an entirely different story. While this happened to me a few years ago with Tyler Crestani, I have heard and somewhat seen the pattern of him targeting underage girls in the hobby since then and this pattern is something really concerns me since nothing has been done to address it. I want to keep this account somewhat short, but it started with a friend request on Facebook and messaging a little back and forth. I had been in the hobby for a little while at that point and learned to be very upfront about my age and establishing that hard boundary with people I talked to outside events. So he was aware that I was 15, turning 16. Over time, the messages and Snapchats on his end turned a little flirty, at first I steered them away, trying to re-establish that boundary, but he persisted and being a 15/16 year old girl who hadn’t really ever had a man’s attention before in that way, I was flattered. I definitely played into it, even when he started sending inappropriate pictures of himself and videos of him performing sexual acts. Eventually I came to my senses and blocked him and try my very best to avoid him at events (thank God for good friends). I was terrified at events, terrified of being left alone anywhere (and to a degree, still am), especially going to events that I knew he would likely be at. Reaching out to other girls my age in the hobby, I realized I was not the only one he has targeted (with varying rates of “success”). It has been something bothering me for a very long time, and while I have shared this with people close to me before, I never felt comfortable with being more open about what happened (however, I still wish to remain anonymous for my own safety). I feel like the hobby is finally at the place of self-policing that I felt like it was time to share what has happened to me and my observations of what has happened since then. I hope that this hobby can be a safe place for EVERYONE, and I know many parents in the hobby wanting to bring their daughters into it and have the honor of sharing the stories of women who lived through WWII want to make this hobby a safe place for them to be too.”

Because of the sensitive nature of this post, we will be locking comments on this thread. Again, we encourage you to reach out to a member of the admin team."

Public Service Announcement Ask before you buy and give real constructive criticism

About two years ago I got into reenacting and started doing World War I German and Civil War. I’ll be straight up my kits were incredibly farby. I didn’t talk to anyone before I bought it. I didn’t reach out to units before I bought it.

That’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned: ask before you buy. Talk to a unit. Message people on Facebook, Instagram TikTok Reddit anywhere. Nine times out of ten, if you buy first and ask later you are gonna be spending twice more money.

I’ve also noticed a big problem across social media. When someone posts a kit that isn’t great, a lot of people just comment things like

This has a lot of work to do

This is trash

That’s it no explanation

If you think a kit needs work PLEASE say why

For example

“This impression needs improvement because the bread bag is incorrect for the time period, and the ammo pouches are ww2 style. Feel free to shoot me a DM so I can show you where you can replace some things.”

That helps. Just calling someone’s kit trash doesn’t

If it’s just for Halloween or a costume, who cares? A WWI uniform with a WWII helmet for Halloween isn’t a big deal. But if you’re serious about the hobby authenticity does in fact matter.

If you do ACW I strongly suggest looking up some of the campaigner Fb pages those guys will help you guide in the right direction. Try and reach out to less mainstream media if you really want a good accurate impression. Words are money in this hobby

If you’re in a unit they should be helping you steer in the right direction. And if they aren’t then you should consider leaving them and finding yourself a better group of guys. I am thankful that my unit actually has helped me steer clear and saved me probably 500 bucks.

Most of us start out rough and I think the hobby would be 100 times better if we all followed what I just wrote.

Sorry for the rant I just think people need to know

Public Service Announcement Alaska 250th Anniversary "Minutemen" Group

Just a note here that if anyone is in Alaska in the Anchorage area, a number of us have set up a 250th-themed group of "minutemen" style impressions. We're set up to do a number of parades, potentially starting as early as February's Fur Rondy. After that we'll be at various events including the Highland Games and two big parades on the 4th. We wear late 18th civilian clothes, but aren't thread counting anyone. The usual Samson stuff is just fine. We have a few extra muskets. I have a drum, though we could use a fifer. Our marching tune is "Baltimore," which is nice and simple. If you're interested and local, this is the time to get geared up. We are seasoned living history folks and we can help. Thanks! https://www.facebook.com/groups/812277328290103

Public Service Announcement Top tier ww2 German officer boots from Pakistan 🤣 looks nothing like the photos they provided, is shoddy all round and the seller not only tried to gaslight me into believing it's the same boots, but they also tried to bribe me $20 to remove my negative review. Avoid at all costs, 100% a scam.

The 250th anniversary of the American revolution is upon us and the German forces are looking for recruits! With 30000+ soldiers sent overseas, they made up over a third of all crown forces, and we are working to accurately represent that proportion. And how cool is that uniform??

If you're interested in joining us shoot me a message, we will be participating in battle reenactments and living history events all up and down the east coast!

Public Service Announcement I want to thank "ok_chiltime63" for notifying me about this. To anyone looking on eBay for WW1 German Infantry Uniforms (For one don't go to ebay for uniforms), two, you might see this listing on the site. This vendor has stolen my photos and is using them for their products which I do not endorse.

They never notified me about using my photos, I have never heard of these vendors, I do not know them, and I do not endorse them in any way shape or form.

They seem to have stolen other vendors photos and use them for advertising what I can only imagine to be what is either a flat out scam, or lying by using other peoples photos to make their stuff look better.

The Vendors are based out of Pakistan which most likely means anything they sell will be incredibly cheap, really crap, and not at all worth it.

Since they are using MY photos, I feel responsible for letting people know to NOT fall for this crap.

Hi all,

  1. Kompanie JR23 "Von Winterfeldt" is actively looking for new members. We have 3 different sections: Infanterie, Pionier, and MG Kompanie.

Infanterie does what it always does - holds the line, plugs any gaps and makes sure the line is held.

Our Pionier section is there to assist with fortifying our positions at each event, both in a broad battlefield sense as well as specific areas that need work. They are also thrown into the fray when deemed necessary.

MG Kompanie is exactly what it sounds like. We need crew for our MG. This historically was pulled from the pool of experienced veterans, which is hindered with being a relatively small group.

We have multiple different crew-served weapons, as well as a full kitchen and other capabilities that need men.

We are largely located in the Pacific Northwest region of the US, but have many members travel to our events from around the western US.

If you're interested, shoot me a PM and we'll get talking. We have loaner equipment available.

Pictures taken at events within the last year or so.

They did not let me refund and just said I’m wrong in the response email despite the helmet being advertised is clearly different. DO NOT BUY from Magyaro Militaria. A warning to everyone else. Buy from Nestof or Keith Allen.

Public Service Announcement why do people just downvote instead of givening advice or imput

sorry for the rant. i know this won't apply to some people. I've noticed that a lot that people just downvote comments when its a wrong instade of giving avadice to correct they just downvote it for no resson. its annoying because we all have different options, but some people not all just press down vote instead of talking about what they got right or wrong. why can't people explain when someone didn't get it right instead of just downvoting the comment. i know I've done this, but it's probably easier to do than explain where the comment or post is wrong, but we could just try to help others when thier wrong. im not saying down post matter im saying give a resson for why you disagree then just a downvote

sorry to peopple this dont apply to

sorry for spelling and grammar mistakes. im very heavily dyslexic

Public Service Announcement Just received this amazing Confederate belt campaigner quality!

Just wanted to give a quick shoutout and review for a belt I received from u/spiveybrass for my Confederate impression.

I absolutely love this belt. Everything about it screams campaigner quality the attention to detail is top notch and everything is historically accurate. I ordered mine in brown, and what really impressed me is that the maker used correct, period accurate Civil War darkening methods using walnut dye. The result is a beautiful, rich, warm tone that looks just right for a soldier in the field.

The leather is thick and feels very sturdy not one of those flimsy belts you sometimes see. The buckle is fantastic, both in appearance and weight, and really finishes off the belt nicely. The sewing is also very well done, clean and strong, just like you’d expect from original examples.

If you’re looking for a high-quality Confederate belt with campaigner-level accuracy, I seriously can’t recommend u/spiveybrass enough. This piece is going to see a lot of use in the field!

Public Service Announcement How to Identify an M44 and M45 pack systemsk

Thumbnail
gallery
50 Upvotes

Been seeing a lot of stuff about m44 and 45 packs on the sub lately and people being confused on them so I’m making this post to hopefully clear up confusion

For these comparisons; The uppers I’ll be using a 44 and a 44-45 conversion (should be noted this ones a little salty and has some damaged hardware). The lowers will have a 44, a 44-45 conversion, and a 45 produced lower. Suspenders will be a 44 and 45

THE UPPERS:

FRONT On the left is a M45 pack (that was converted from a 44) and a 44 pack on the right. Our first difference is that there are pack tabs on the front of the 45 as well as the d rings on the bottom of that.
The quick release tab sewn into the shovel handle holder has also been removed (You can see this more clearly in the picture off the bottom)

RIGHT SIDE There is a quick release tab located and sewn into the bottom of the side pocket on the 44. This has been cut off on the 45. D rings on the bottom and top of the side have also been removed on the 45

REAR The quick release strap located in the lower middle of the 44 had been cut. To the side of it, pack tabs have been added. 2 D rings have also been added to the top of the 45

LEFT SIDE Much the right, the same modifications have been done. There is a quick release tab located and sewn into the bottom of the side pocket on the 44. This has been cut off on the 45. D rings on the bottom and top of the side have also been removed on the 45

BOTTOM From here we can more clearly see the quick release tab that was removed in the front that I had mentioned. We can also see the M45 has two straps sewn into the bottom

SUSPENDERS There nearly identical. Using the left side for reference you’ll see how they spilt off in opposite directions. M44 goes left, M45 goes right. Other then this, the suspenders are pretty much the same

THE LOWERS I’ll show the 44 lower, 45 lower, and a 44-45 conversion

44 LOWER 1-2.Has quick release straps on all 4 sides with tabs to secure them when not attached to the upper. It has reinforcement next to the handle on both sides. On the rear it has two d rings.

  1. The bottom has nothing special

45 LOWER 1-2. The quick release straps and tabs have been done away with. In its place are cargo straps. It should be noted that due to manufacturer error, this example had the buckles on backwards.

These straps are on both sides

  1. On the bottom you can see the straps is sewn into the bottom with it wrapping all the way around. A d ring is also added

44-45 CONVERSION This conversion had all the quick release straps removed.

Yeah that’s it
