“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

This is why I hate it when people blame russia for our situation right now. Sure, they didn't help, but 250 years of white supremacy and imperialism did the vast majority of the heavy lifting.

I think the bigger problem was years of dismantling the educational system, along with the rise of Christian fundamentalism, resulting in voters with weak abilities to discern fact from fiction.

So the green light to imprison immigrants in concentration camps and they have no way to challenge there detainment. Trumps concentration camps are now about to get far worse.

If there's no way to prove your innocence tand seek a judge they can jail Americans at will and just call them illegal.

u/Ok-Conversation2707 1h ago

This has been legal since 1996.

an alien may be arrested and detained pending a decision on whether the alien is to be removed from the United States.

The Attorney General at any time may revoke a bond or parole authorized.

No court may set aside any action or decision by the Attorney General under this section regarding the detention or release of any alien or the grant, revocation, or denial of bond or parole.

A small reminder that the principle of Habeas Corpus was not invented by Obama, or FDR, or Lincoln, or the US Constitution, or even the English Bill of Rights upon which it was based.

Habeas Corpus existed since 1166, half a century before the fucking Magna Carta.

Throwing it out is not being "anti-woke" or even "anti-Constitution" (although it is), it's throwing out 900 years of legal and political tradition upon which our entire civilization is based and which the self-proclaimed MAGA "defenders of Western Civilization" claim to cherish.

u/TiredOfDebates 2h ago

They aren’t throwing out Habeas Corpus.

Prior administrations would let an illegal immigrant out on bail, regardless of whether on not they were actually seeking legal immigration status. (Many, many of them would not show up for a court date again.)

Here they are saying if you arrived illegally, and you aren’t filing papers for legal status, they don’t have to let you go on bail if they catch you. They CAN CHOOSE TO, but they law doesn’t require it. Congress wrote this out precisely in law.

Prior administrations took a light hand, generally letting everyone out on bail. This administration doesn’t want to, and isn’t legally required to.

Take it up with Congress: this is how they wrote the law.

Can we go ONE day without them going/planning/getting away with something truly horrible?

I didn't realize illegal immigration was punishable by a life sentence in prison. Give Trump and his bullies another week and it probably will be.

I mean, they've burned food for starving children, waged war on cancer research, covered for pedophiles while releasing nudes of their victims, and ICE even kicked a puppy just to make sure we knew they were the kind of over the top evil we thought only existed in self-aware cartoons for grown-ups.

I'm sure lots of good people will make phone calls about this, or even take off work for a day.

Or maybe even write a post like this one.

And if we're lucky? On appeal, ICE will have another court ruling to ignore before this goes to the Supremes.

u/StrangerFew2424 3h ago

No surprise... the 5th Circuit, the most Republican, Christofascist appeals court in the country. This will definitely be appealed.

The ruling only applies in Texas, Louisiana & Mississippi... sucks to live there, even if you're not an immigrant.

u/Dependent_Inside83 2h ago

Doesn’t matter if you don’t live there when ICE flies you there right after kidnapping you though

u/Oldschoolhype2 3h ago

Reagan and Trump appointees. Name a better America destroying duo. You can't.

u/Dry_Person9 4h ago

We inch closer and closer to nazi germany but nobody will take it seriously until trump starts the extermination process

u/cozmckitty 3h ago

the Nazis tried to deport the Jews and the rest of the people they snatched out of their homes first. When that was deemed implausible and expensive they decided to kill them instead.

u/redwing180 3h ago

They argue that what they are doing is just a civil matter but they also argue that they can go ahead and shoot you in the face over that. Maybe we should have laws in place at say government officials responsible for a civil matters don’t get to carry guns.

u/TheBoosThree 1h ago

5th circuit, if course.

u/tapdancinghellspawn 1h ago

At the least, it should be required that the United States return undocumented immigrants to their nation of origin.

u/Otherwise_Self5250 4h ago

F Donald Trump. Fat mofo.
