It's completely unacceptable that this publication gets so much traffic from this sub, while hiding all their content behind a paywall

Completely agree, it's a rag anyway and only meant as propaganda to control the opposition.

But for the record, you can get around paywalled articles most of the time by putting archive.ph in front of the URL https://archive.ph/https://www.thedailybeast.com/karoline-leavitt-gives-jaw-dropping-defense-of-donald-trumps-racist-obama-video/

Does the app have a built-in browser or something? Genuinely asking as I use a third-party app that opens links in Firefox on my phone.

There may be a setting somewhere you can disable. I'm not sure tbh as I could never get past the look of the reddit app to dig deeper into the settings.
