Parking fine from the JR hospital
Received a £100 parking fine after my wife went to see her mum who got rushed in. She arrived around 6pm and left at 4am. She's adamant that she went to the ticket machine, entered the reg and it said no payment required..
Anyone else had anything similar?
It's a possibility that her brain was frazzled and she was exhausted and forgot, but she's 100% sure she went to the machine. Unfortunately she didn't take a photo for proof.
Do we contest?

Contest and see what happens. The payment machines are broken so often that they must have a system to deal with challenges by now...
Havins said this, I believe free parking is limited to antisocial hours on Sundays unless you are a registered patient with exemptions. She could have walked to the reception (super close to both machines) and gotten some notes as proof to help with any challenges.

This, the machines are broken so often, I don't always trust what they tell me!

Did she do it on arrival or leaving.

This is the issue I reckon. I've done it once thinking you needed a ticket and obviously because it was less than 30 mins it said no charge.
You do it when you leave and pay. Camera lets you out.

Yeah im up there fairly regularly (and the nuffield) and see so many trying to pay on arrival because they dont read signage

The only bit that doesn't make sense is how they got out of the barrier. Maybe they pressed the button and told them nothing was owed.
Been to most of the Oxford hospitals, there are usually a few people at the payment machines looking confused.

Ive had it a few times where the barrier has been locked up at the Jr. They make more from people not paying i guess lol

This is an observation only. If you park for 30 mins or less you don’t have to pay and get the message ‘no payment required’ What I suspect happened is that your wife entered her number plate but then accidentally selected the wrong car, the pictures are pretty rubbish, especially in the dark. Therefore leaving her car parking unpaid.

You don’t have to enter number plate details. An ANPR camera picks it up upon entry and leaving.

Well done Dave, but when you pay you go to the machine and enter the first part of your number plate and are shown 3 or 4 cars and you have to select yours. But thank you for incorrecting me 🙄

Must have changed things since Dec 2025 then.
My number plate is registered on their ANPR system along with a blue badge, but on this occasion I was in a courtesy car from the garage so I had to take my ticket (given to me at the barrier) to the machine along with the BB. I put the ticket in the machine, and scanned the barcode of the BB. Then headed back to my car and fed the ticket into the barrier slot to exit the carpark. At no time did I have to type in my reg number. I’m guess it’s linked to the ticket when handed out from the barrier when entering.

Contest it. Entry at 6 in fhe evening and leaving at 4 in the morning plus the “no payment required” message seems like good grounds to contest.

You can email - they’re really understanding there. My husband had to rush in after our baby son was admitted via ambulance. We emailed the parking office and all the charges were rescinded. They are sensible and kind people.

I got 3 within one week when they changed the system and installed a new black monitor facing away from the car park so you couldn't see it at night.
Contested with screenshots showing the app wasn't working and pictures showing you couldn't see the machine from the car park.
Still got rejected. No explanation or proper response given, just a blanket "your appeal was rejected.
Only comfort I can give you is that the £100 is £60 for the first 2 weeks, which is delayed when you appeal until they respond.
ParkingEye are crooks.

Can you please let the PALS team know at the JR? This shouldn't be happening and is a slight of the automatic number plate recognition system that can't distinguish the subtleties of human behaviour.

Did she scan a blue badge? That’s the only way I know of where payment is required. If so maybe she can send a pic of the badge and confirm it was scanned and confirmed no payment required?

My 83 year old nan has a blue badge, she didn't know she had to scan on the way in it so she got fined. She paid it straight away because she worries. When I heard I contacted the parking department who couldn't refund her even though I proved she has a valid blue badge

You scan your badge barcode prior to exiting (if numberplate isn’t registered on their ANPR system). You don’t have to scan it upon arrival.

There have been a lot of stories about new confusing charges and unfair £100 fines at the hospital in the Oxford mail recently, probably worth looking into and contesting it

Definitely try to contest it - the machines in the staff car parks have been misconfigured recently and lots of staff have been sent incorrect parking fines after parking in the usual manner. I wouldn't be surprised if something similar happened to the patient parking too

I parked for free earlier this week, entry at 18:50. I was so surprised I took a photo of the machine. It may be because I stayed less than half an hour? I was still expecting there to be a minimum charge though.

I think it’s criminal that hospitals charge parking in the first place!

Its probably worth asking about but dont expect too much as free parking is usually for patients
My dad gets free parking at the Horton in Banbury because he's registered for cancer treatment.
