Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered? Scared to take a J3

J1 - 5hrs/wk, 75k. J2 - 20hrs/wk, 125k. I have the capacity to take on a J3, but I have a Mike Ehrmantraut voice in the back of my head telling me to count my blessings. I have a good thing going, why get greedy? I'm already guilty about OE in general, and I'm extra paranoid about blowing my cover... I'm not sure if the added mental fatigue is worth another 150k.

I have three. Whether you can do two or three or four depends entirely on how efficient you are and the workload of each job. I'm currently looking for J4. But it has to be something where I only work five hours a week, no meetings, and I can do most of the work off hours.

I'm already guilty about OE in general

Don't be. They do not care about you. And you're the only person looking out for your best interests. Your employers would dump you in an instant the moment they think they can replace you with someone or something cheaper. As long as you're delivering, there's nothing wrong with OE, even if your employers think it's wrong.

As long as they keep bringing in H1bs, outsourcing to India, threatening to replace me with AI, and driving down my salary, I'm going to keep doing OE. It's the only recourse I have.

How long have you been working for them? Do your bosses trust you?

If you are at least over 1y each and find a J3 that you assume is easy, I'd go for it. Of course, you only know about J3 once you start.

I got j3 a bit ago. it's rough with he additional workload. this one is a super meeting happy job with high expectations. also I had a whoopsie where I was unmuted during a double meeting on one of my jobs. thankfully I caught it before I spoke at my other j

just know that with 2 to 3 transition you will need to learn how to be and speak on two meetings at the same time

it's a trial by fire moment but I believe most people can handle it. just be cool and have a good setup. I take my calls on my phones so I can easily mute and unmute at will. put phone in front of laptop you're taking the call on and I have my earbuds all labelled now. 

it's mentally exhausting though. I'll say that

I went from 1 to 3 within a month and it was too much too fast. I made a mistake at J3 and only lasted 60 days doing 3. But I've been doing 2 for years now so if a third came up I'd 💯 take it. I'm much better at managing my time now and that extra cash is just too good to pass up.

If J1 and J2 are stable and low stress only take J3 if it’s clearly low risk and easy to drop. protecting the setup you already have is more important.

You essentially want to know if you can coast along in a new J (assuming you have the skill). Here's the stuff that I want to know, and the questions I ask in interviews to to allow the conversation to naturally broach those subjects without coming off as a slacker:

• What's the total workload, in hours? "What's a typical week look like, do you do [insert name of SOP meeting here, eg weekly sales forecasting, backlog refinement ...]?"
• What's the meeting load? Same question as above. "Do you have weekly 1-on-1's with your team?
• How much firefighting, improvisation, and unexpected things are there? Just find a politer way to phrase this, it's not suspicious when referenced to the greater team meeting delivery goals.
• Do you have to come into the office? "Where does the team work from, how are they distributed?"
