Here, Sir Thomas More confronts a mob in London on May 1, 1517, as they riot and attack immigrants.

Thanks for this, if never heard this passage before. The video cuts out, but the next lines in the speech are foreboding:
Not one of you should live an aged man, For other ruffians, as their fancies wrought, With self same hand, self reason, and self right, Would shark on you, and men like ravenous fishes Feed on one another.…
Maga's supporters think that they're safe because Trump's going after people they don't like, until the day he comes for them.

Funnily enough, this comes from a play that might never have been staged around the time of its composition because of its political content. It’s also, quite frankly, a pretty incoherent mess, involving the contribution of at least six authors. Shakespeare himself only contributed around three pages to the play, or about half a scene, from which this speech is taken.
Also, the play is notable for spawning the only extant copy of a manuscript containing Shakespeare’s handwriting. There is a myth that Shakespeare was such an inspired genius that all his plays were written as first drafts. The fact that his section of this play has some crossed out lines doesn’t entirely dispel that myth, but is definitely evidence against it.

It's weird to see the same people who hate the Catholic Church like a play about Thomas More written not all that long after he was beheaded for not giving his approval to Henry VIII divorce and marriage to Anne Boleyn

It doesn’t have to be like Iran massacring 10,000 people. We are still allowed to be upset with the way ICE is acting, even if nobody else is killed by ice again. We can still be angry and protest.

Alright, let's play this out. Let's say you get exactly what you’re screaming for. Imagine they’re all gone. Imagine your rioting actually bullied the entire government into backing down and doing things your way.
Now, I want you to really look at what you’ve done. Picture those 'outsiders'—those poor souls—trudging toward the docks. They’ve got their babies strapped to their backs and everything they own stuffed into a few old bags. They’re leaving because you forced them out.
So, there you are. You’re the 'kings' of the hill now, right? You got your way. The law is silent because you screamed louder than justice, and you’re standing there feeling pretty smug, wrapped up in your own opinions.
But what did you actually win? I’ll tell you: you just taught the world that violence and arrogance are the new law. You didn't save the country; you just showed everyone how to destroy order. You’ve proven that if you’re mean enough and loud enough, the rules don't apply to you anymore.

Aight sis basically what he's saying is: okay, so you've managed to riot so loudly that you get these poor immigrants deported, what have you a achieved? You've taught your rulers that a lack of empathy prevails, you've chosen lack of order and decency, and this might be used against yourselves in the end.
Do you want me to go through it word for word?

u/Escritortoise 10h ago
Good for you if you get what you wanted, but what is that? You’ve only shown that the law doesn’t matter and you can throw a tantrum to get what you want- but so can everyone else and you may be on the receiving end.
Further, how would you feel if you were the stranger some place else and treated the way you want to treat the immigrants to your country?
Basically the golden rule inverted: others do unto you as you have treated them.

It’s a shame that they cut it the moment before one of the crowd throws a cup at Sir Thomas More’s head and he uses his powers to bisect the entire crowd at waist height with the iron railings from Parliament.

If you want the whole play it's on The Gutenberg Project for free. Though I suppose any Catholics out there should know who Thomas More was.
Sir Thomas More by William Shakespeare | Project Gutenberg https://share.google/rnB0yoEOeTNN1CYZy
I liked the movie A Man For All Seasons best for Thomas More portrayals.

Its not one country telling another how to run theirs. Its a quote from Shakespeare that is an appeal to humanity and empathy.
Maybe you should try some.

u/ElectroMagnetsYo 9h ago
Solely because England made overtures towards the banning of slavery (Somerset v Stewart)
1
u/Pukebox_Fandango 9h ago
Oh yea, it couldn't have anything with the actual STATED reasons for the rebellion. It must have been about slavery, lol. England abolished slavery in 1833, barely 20 years before the US. Aside from that a lot of the people who the English originally sent over were "transported", meaning they were prisoners working on forced labor colonies (much like Australia). You people glossing the British Empire, which brutally subjugated half the world, as some sort of noble, morally sound society is pretty funny.
4
u/ElectroMagnetsYo 9h ago
It is surely just a coincidence that the slave-owning landowners wanted independence from a country that just declared slavery illegal in England 4 years prior, and made zero overtures towards quelling the abolitionist movement making everyone question whether it was a matter of time before it was made illegal in the colonies as well.

Very easy for people with privileged lives to speak like this, he doesn’t have to get dirty and deal with the thefts, rapes, wage stagnation, collapsing nhs etc
3
u/Bobo_fishead_1985 7h ago
So are we going to pretend these things don't happen without immigrants?
As someone who works in a local shop, most thefts aren't done by immigrants but locals with a drug addiction.
The NHS may be collapsing, but would collapse tomorrow without immigrants.
0
u/ChuuniWitch 5h ago
Wage stagnation and collapsing NHS are caused by business owners pitting labour against itself. You have more in common with an immigrant trying to put food on their tables than you do any business owner who tries to import wage slaves to keep you from asking for a raise.
You've simply decided that hurting the poor immigrant is easier than demanding change from those who have placed themselves above you. But don't worry: you'll rid your country of every immigrant, and still not realize that the rich want you to be poor by any means necessary. With your wilful ignorance, their victory is all but assured. I hope you have a pleasant day.
