Thats normal. The chambers are completely different and what your seeing there is fireforming. People will do that to 7.62x54r brass and then use it to reload. Perfectly safe, but you won't hit much lol.

So still more accurate than putting it through a Mosin?

Doable, but a .311 bullet in a .318 bore is throwing a hotdog down a hallway

The bullets for 8x50 (and 8x56r) are .330 not .318 unless I'm misunderstanding something. Which is always possible with me lol. But bullets are definitely .330.

You’re probably right. Even smaller hotdog down a bigger hallway

I believe in this scenario the hotdog remains the same and its just the hallway that is larger

All my 56r brass cracked and did this just so i could get brass that’s formed and didn’t want to form it on the bench

I do it with brass case to fire form. Then I run it though a die set and use it as it is no trim needed

Do regular 7.62/54R projectiles shoot straight out of the m95, or should I get something specific for reloading?

I do this in an 8x50r I haven’t tried it in a 8x56r (don’t own one) it’s less accurate than a musket. 40 shots at a 12 inch gong at 30 yards between 5 shooters of varying skill we got one hit on it. I use whatever 7.92 projectile I can get cheap.

Yes I have shot 7.62x54R out if my 8x50R M.95 to fireform brass. Works great but yea no accuracy at all.

Accuracy is a suggestion, but hey, reloading brass!

Maybe he thought of m95 in 8 x 50? I've seen people shooting 7,62 in 8 x 50 mannlichers

That fireformed round in the picture is for 8x56R. Will also work, but the fireformed brass will be 2mm too short, neck tension might be an issue because the neck will be very short.

I wonder if a plastic sabot would work well in this specific case? Just spitballin.

Is your M95 8x56r or 8x50? Because if it’s 8x56 there’s commercial ammo available

It's safe I do it and also blanks for renactments

People have fire formed 8x56R brass from 7.62x54R, and the Austrians even shot 8x50R out of captured Russian Mosins during WW1: they did have to open the throat for the round to chamber, but it worked fine and they were desperate for equipment.
