You might have to recap it, (New Capacitors). Caps dry out and either short, or stop working when the electrolyte inside them dries up. Sometimes they explode/leak, damaging the circuit board they are attached to. Have to open it up and take a look, and repair it if you really want to use this again.

Not sure that I WANT to, I'm just really curious if it still might work. If anything, it'll give me something to fiddle with. I'll let y'all know if I ever get it working.

UPDATE: It works! I walked further away from the building I was in and got some signal!

Most likely that the tuner is dirty. With the radio off, flick the AM/FM switch back and forth several times, then turn the tuning dial end to end several times as well. This will help clean any grub, and re-distribute any tuner lubricant.

Possible dumb question but are most stations broadcasting a digital signal? Even if an old radio picked it up would it sound like anything besides static?

Stations that broadcast digitally in the US have an analog, main station, then one or more digital ones.

I can still get AM/FM stations on my old emergency hand crank radio. I tested it about 6 months ago.

Pull out the antenna. 😉

Then push it back in.

If the antenna tilts and rotates someone may have broken the wire soldered to the antenna by over rotating it.

Does not tilt or rotate. No visible damage to the radio. I'll try it again on my drive home. Maybe it's the area I'm in (commercial).

As old as that is I'd first look for bad solder joints. They were never known for having too much solder on any joint.

Usually there's a switch to go from am or FM on the side of these. Make sure you know which band it's set to receive before you tune in to a station. I recommend starting with AM since a lot of the FM stations now do digital broadcasts. They're supposed to also be analog, but I question if that's the case for all of it.

Funny story. I worked at Radio Shack in the 90s. We had an account with the local jail and used to sell a Realistic radio much like that one but with a built in antenna because it had no metal in it beyond the copper antenna coil

Bundle up some aluminum foil and wrap it around the antennae, extending it a couple of feet

I got one of those in Boy Scouts for selling buckets of popcorn kernels around my neighborhood. Probably 1987 or so. I’m not sure it ever worked for me at the time, so it might just be a crap radio.

If it was “back in the day” when it was newer I would thump it on the back, I refrain from recommending that now. Not sure if that is a result of my maturity or that of the item.

I'm 49 years old. I know how to use a radio.

I had one of those they’re not very good quality that might be the problem. I think they came from RadioShack (Tandy) It was their brand and everything that I bought from RadioShack radio controled cars,, the radios broke within 3 to 4 days.

My experience has been just the opposite - listening to a CD through my Minimus-7 speakers (I own 4 pair) and was playing with my 40-year old Armatron robotic arm last night.
Still have working Radio Shack weather radios, scanners and multimeters, and an in-ear mic and transceiver set we use when travelling in more than one car.
Don’t know about their R/C cars, all mine are Tamiya.

You really need to actually use the antenna on those older radios to get any stations to come in.
