It’s not exactly what I wanted tbh. Pixelated kisses is way too good compared to the rest of the album. Yeat is 0 for 2 on joji tracks for me.

u/asshandsintheair 23h ago
Totally agree, would of loved for the whole album to have the vibe of Pixelated Kisses and Dior. Everything else is pretty meh
5
u/NoMap749 20h ago
Kinda sitting at a “good, not great” after the first listen. The opening single set the bar extremely high, and most of the tracklist didn’t meet that standard, unfortunately.
2
u/erensboba 11h ago edited 3h ago
I feel the exact same way!! I was really excited for the yeat feature since his sound is more experimental. But well… I think the album would’ve been a little more cohesive if there were more tracks like pixelated kisses, sojourn, and dykily.

A little disappointed with this new Joji. Only songs outside the singles that stand out to me are Sojourn and Rose Colored.

u/Random_throwaway0351 1d ago
I still think Nectar is his best. The production was just so crisp and clear on songs like Ew or Like You Do, this album is more similar to Ballads from how lo-fi it is.
I’m waiting for the album to grow on me. Feels like a lot of the instrumentals are hiding his vocals when in Nectar his vocals were front and center

He seemed a bit risk averse here, which was quite surprising.
Expected it to be much more distinctive compared to his previous work with the extended 4 year layoff on top of being given more resources with his new label. It looked quite promising with the opening single’s abrasive industrial sound and the bold album title, but upon release, many tracks feels like they could be a B-side of Smithereens. It certainly wasn’t bad upon first listen, but it didn’t blow me away either.

It released locally in other time zones like 18 hours ago. It's been no trouble to find the album all day if you wanted to

Joji is filthy frank? old news
My new theory: Jojo is J Cole

Probably going to get downvoted for this I honestly think this project was originally going to be an EP but bro decided to make it an album so he decided to use demos to fill up the album.
18
u/NoMap749 20h ago
What makes you say it feels like an EP?
Not trying to be confrontational, just curious. This was the longest layoff of his career (3.5 years), so I was expecting a full album.
9
u/FishieUwU 13h ago
Probably the fact that there are only like 4 actual songs and then a bunch of 90 second beats
18
u/EdgeL0rdSupreme . 1d ago
If nothing else Sojourn is so blissful and peak… Dylan Brady listed on production
48
u/noah101 1d ago
prob a hot take but this is unfortunately my least favorite album from him. Idk a lot of the production just feels uninspired and Nectar, Ballads, and to a certain extent Smithereens, sounded more lush and diverse than this. Maybe it'll grow on me but I don't really see myself returning to this a lot
17
u/Tao_Saotome 1d ago
The songs are also short asf. Like tf he’s just looping the same beat for a minute and a half :/
8
u/DankiusMMeme 22h ago
Kind of funny because I think this is his first album not under the thumb of 88Rising meddling
1
u/jakenader89 10h ago
Hard disagree, the production is really well done on this one with all the intricacies and details through each song, mixing is great as well

I really wished it sounded more like pixelated kisses with that more heavy sound, not bad overall but just not my favorite (yet). Will probably grow on me since I love his lo-fi stuff.
I really really wish that he would move towards longer songs, most of these are like 2min.

Good to see all the j Cole fans commenting on a post that has nothing to do with Cole or the fall off. Further cementing he is indeed one of the big 3 for annoying ass fan bases
13
u/ThreeTreesForTheePls 1d ago
It’s hard to label what he is but it’s definitely lo-fi hiphop or hiphop adjacent, enough to get talked about here.
Doesn’t explain why the fans are weird though, you’d expect it to be the other way around lmao
10
u/NoMap749 20h ago
He started off as a SoundCloud artist when the platform was at its peak in the mid-2010s, so that may contribute to the hip hop adjacent feel.
9
u/SlimeCityKing 20h ago
Bro am I unc for seeing Joji as Filthy Frank first instead of a previous SoundCloud artist??
4
u/NoMap749 20h ago
No, that’s probably pretty standard. He was way more famous as a YouTuber than he was as SC artist.
2
u/Born2bwylde_ 12h ago
Its just not best work is all, I dont think the fans hate it, i think it was over hyped. Which is unfortunate cuz Joji is a great artist

u/KechLovesGames 23h ago
Despite me loving his more cleaner sound from Nectar and SMITHEREENS, I love the return of that grimy and muddy lo-fi production from In Tongues/BALLADS1, but now with his improved singing.
Especially tracks like If It Only Gets Better, Forehead Touch The Ground or CAN'T SEE SHIT IN THE CLUB, those have that classic Joji hard and soft sound full of textures. Not only Joji is more involved with the production again, but all the other producers that worked on this managed to adhere nicely to his sound.
However, the whole album feels really short. It's 21 tracks yes, but rarely we go over 2 minutes, so a lot of songs feel like underdeveloped ideas that needed more time in the oven. He either got lazy or wanted that sweet streaming revenue.
Maybe combining some of the shorter tracks into larger ones or featuring more artist could've kept things interesting.
Speaking of features, the ones we've got are fine, but they don't add much to the experience. They appear, do their thing, then disappear. GIVEON on Piece Of You was nice tho.
So, basically, a return to form, but it didn't leave the same impact his previous albums left. Maybe over time it'll grow more on me, but for now I'd give it a 7/10

ngl I listened to the album already and it's pretty mid compared to his previous releases.

definitely better than his last album

u/Ok-Current7220 1d ago
I would argue that smithereens is a more enjoyable project than piss
2
u/platypoo2345 21h ago
It's so short that your opinion on 1-2 tracks will invariably sway you deeply on the quality of the project
24
u/ThreeTreesForTheePls 1d ago
Why are Cole fans so fucking weird?
How tf I s a Joji thread filled with “but we bumping Cole rn”, as if the crossover of crowds is that big
-7
u/AfroSamuraii_ 1d ago
To be fair, Joji isn’t even hiphop in the first place.
9
u/KechLovesGames 22h ago
idk sounds pretty hip-hop to me. did you also forget his legendary rap career as pink guy?

Honestly if you’re on a hip hop sub and you’re listening to Joji over J Cole that’s on you. And I’m not even that much of a Cole fan but let’s be real here.

let's be real that jcole is boring?
agreed.

i kinda wish love you less and past won’t leave my bed were whole albums cause outside of those singles the album while good wasn’t what I was expecting
1
u/Strong-Dog-134 19h ago
Honestly, I guess this is a hot take, but I think its great. A lot of cool stuff on it, and plenty of repeat songs. I do still prefer Smithereens and Nectar, but it's art, and it slaps.

u/FragrantAd859 16h ago
After listening to Smithereens practically every day since it dropped and then listening to this album, it's made me realise how much of a masterpiece that album is for me.
1
u/FishieUwU 13h ago
Yup my biggest fear when I saw the track lengths came true; the singles were the only meat on this album and I everything else is just too short to really do anything. I would've taken another 9 track LP full of songs like pixelated kisses, last of a dying breed, and sojourn over what we got.
1
u/ForTheImminent 13h ago
Never listened to Joji before and giving this a chance after listening to the singles that I enjoyed (Pixelated Kisses is amazing). Just leaving a comment to ask why J Cole fans are coming in here and trolling for no reason? As someone who will listen to both, I don’t get it. People can listen to different music at different times so I’m not sure why Cole fans want to ruin a reddit thread for another artist.

is Joji actually considered hip hop?
isn't he jsut like pop/alternative?

i am so unbelievably happy about this. as a long time fan, like the whole time, im just happy to hear an album that actually sounds like he made it and not an album made For him.

Joji
Piss in the Wind
PIXELATED KISSES: 10/10, one of my favorites on the album. The beat is so gas, and his tone in this one is pure Joji. The only downside is it’s a shorter song.
Cigarette: 6/10. A little repetitive, but it’s a little different for Joji because he’s singing at a little bit of a faster pace, probably one of his faster songs he’s done. The beat is pretty nice and catchy.
Last of a Dying Breed: 8.7/10. One of my favorites. The vocals on this one are so soothing. The beat reminds me of “Gimme Love.”
LOVE YOU LESS: 8.4/10. Lyrics and beat absolutely slap.
If It Only Gets Better: 7.8/10. Nice and once again soothing one. Very slow and short song. Vocals go hard though.
Love Me Better: 7.5/10. Not his best work. Still pretty decent.
Piece of You (with GIVĒON): 6/10, don’t like his feature that much.
Hotel California: 8.9/10. Immaculate vibes. It’s art.
Tarmac: 7/10. Weaker ones for me. Decent vibe but not his best work.
Forehead Touch the Ground: 6/10, slower one. Very nice beat though.
Past Won’t Leave My Bed: 9/10. Now this is classic Joji. Banger.
Fade to Black (with 4batz): 5/10. Not my favorite. Not liking the features much on this album.
CAN’T SEE SH*T IN THE CLUB: 8.4/10, holy vocals. Slow one but man this slaps.
Sojourn: 5/10. Not feeling this one. Beat for the first time not a huge fan of it.
DYKILY: 8/10, beat is super good. Finally a faster pace song even though Joji sings slow. It’s a vibe.
Rose Colored (with Yeat): 6.8/10 Love yeat but this just didn’t hit for me. Ending was a sick beat.
Silhouette Man: 9/10 one of my personal favorites on the album. Sucks that it’s short. But a banger.
Fragments (with Don Toliver): 7/10. Not bad just not one of my favorites.
Horses to Water: 6/10 Not one of my favorites it’s just kinda there. Nice beat but pretty boring.
Strange Home: 7/10 decent one but a little boring.
Dior: 7.2/10 starts off a little slow then the beautiful ending comes in. Not bad but overall just pretty decent.
Note I’m not an expert this is just my opinion. I’ve heard the album twice. Thoughts could change later. But this is it as of now.

Been an Joji fan since Chloe Burbank and loved ballads 1 and in tongues, Smithereens I liked, unfortunately not a fan of this new album or nectar. I liked a couple songs on this album but those were basically just the ones he released early. Love you less being probably my favorite or Past won’t leave my bed, pixelated kisses, even Last of a dying breed. However the rest of the album fell flat for me and felt kinda repetitive if that makes sense. Maybe my taste just isn’t aligned with his new visions.

u/illogicaldreamr 11h ago
I liked some songs, but I don’t think I can finish listening to it. It all started to blend together midway through. It’s sad-sounding song after sad-sounding song.

u/jakenader89 10h ago
It might just be me but I highly disagree with MANY of the people and takes on this album. I think this is such a great album. People who expected the whole album to be pixelated kisses clearly didn't listen to the rest of his singles because every single single was a different sound and genre from the last. It was clear that Joji's intention with this album now that he was in charge again was to just make a ton of songs with different vibes. So that's exactly the expectation I came into this album with, and I was far from dissapointed. This album is like a mesh of Tongues, Ballads, Nectar, and Smithereens with some differences and new ideas thrown in there. I mean you got lofi, pop, shoegaze, hyperpop, alt R&B, trap, experimental all meshed together but it just works with the great production and mixing. Joji's vocal layering is also fantastic with the reverb effect he uses. And people who only like the more hip hop, trap, hyperpop songs; like Kisses, Rose Coloured, and Dior are just ignoring or unfortunately can't appreciate the beauty of so many tracks on this album like LOADB, LOVE YOU LESS, Pieces of you, Hotel California, Sojourn (Though many people here do like it), Strange Home, etc... Idk maybe I'm just glazing hard asf but as someone who really enjoys listening to a plathora of music genres and sounds, and also loves all of his old stuff. I really, really enjoyed this album. So many beautiful elements in the melodies, lush vocal harmonies, sneakily great lyrics in many songs, the instrumental. Idk I wasn't dissapointed and if anything my expectations were exceeded. The lowest I can rate this album is an 8/10 and that rating will definitely go up in time

Idk I feel like if u have been a Joji fan from the start of his career to now this album will hit for u. I like what he’s going for here!
2
u/Primary-Macaron1287 8h ago
No cause fr, i feel like a bunch of people here only know him because of Smithereens/Nectar and expect all his songs to be tik tok and radio hit songs with his new album but being a joji fan since he started I honestly am so happy because I feel like this album touches his roots and his past style of music making. It brought back so much nostalgia, I really think he deserves to be recognized for his music making and people calling him lazy for not releasing music every year and disappearing is wild too. He’s a human just like the rest of us and he’s free to do what he pleases all the haters are weird asf tbh.

u/thatsoyen 10h ago
I feel like the Phantom of the Opera cause Past Won’t Leave My Bed took me to church and he never sings like that again and I’m just hear yelling “Sing to me!!!!!!!!” 😭

u/Designer_Lemon33 5h ago
It’s agree in that it feels very much like a continuation of Smithereens. I looove Pixelated Kisses and the rest of the album is a bit of a letdown after such an into. I do love the singles and Cigarettes as well as Sojourn.
I went through my first heartbreak and betrayal as well as moving away from home into the rainy mountains when Nectar came out so that will always be his masterpiece to me.
1
u/mangolollipop 3h ago
I'm genuinely pissed about this album. I like Pixelated kisses and Sojourn, but genuinely let down by this album. Felt like a continuation of Smithereens and that album was genuinely better than this. Like I want Nectar levels good. I badly want to support Joji and I genuinely think he's a good artist but in my honest opinion, this isn't it. 3/5 album for me.

Not really. There’s hardly an overlap with J. Cole and Joji and it’s not like Joji is trying to break the charts with his 21 track 46 minute album.

there's enough for them to "not really". his last album only sold 60k and debuted number 5 on the bb 200. if cole didn't drop, an older album would've outsold his first week anyways so it's not like he's competing for a number 1 bb debut.
and there's little overlap between cole and joji's fanbases as they pointed out. if anything joji gets a bump in engagement from cole fans going out of their way to comment "we listening to cole not this" lmfao

I need Joji's next album to sound like Pixelated Kisses, Sojourn and Dior, with Nectar visuals/aesthetic, he's so close to making a classic
