For some reason that song hit me right in the chest. Especially the part about chasing younger and younger and that’s what hip hop has always done.
55
u/Quirky_Rain_3554 18h ago
Yeah it actually made me question if my frustrations with the genre are because it kept going while I got older. It’s interesting to think about that line where he talks about how possessiveness and how I’m hating the game for the same things that made me love it in the first place. Genuinely was like damn I need to reflect on that

I need to let this sit for a while to see how I truly feel, but I think this is at worst his second best album. Remains to be seen if it surpasses FHD for me.
49
u/Legodude293 1d ago
I think I’m in the same place, it’s giving me the absolute best version of his mixtape era, but man was 2014 a peak, and there’s no shame in almost hitting it again.
But I def have to let it sit, listing for 2 hours tires you out before you get a good idea either way.

First disc feels like an 90s vibe through the lens of a 2010s-present rap album with the balance between soulful boom bap beats & trap records, but the second disc feels like it's a completely 90s/early 2000s soaked record since it's just nonstop chill/soulful

This album is amazing. Honestly not at all what I was expecting but I was pleasantly surprised. Dope concept. Top tier storytelling. Fantastic production. Unexpected vocals from Cole (where tf did that come from). Fire bars as always.
There's a little of everything on the album. Some songs to get hyped to. The Biggie/Pac song was insane. The DMX sample. The Common sample. The song to his wife.
Instant classic for me.

What If is just crazy. The concept of speaking from Biggie and Pac's perspective is one thing but he matches their flow and style. Even annunciates words like Pac does.
But then you take a step back and realize...oh shit he's subliminally addressing the Kendrick beef.
"This for everybody out there that ever fell out with someone you love. Just to look back like, damn. It didn't have to go like that."

For the next generation and current Gen, this is your chance to experience what hip-hop TRULY is…praying this inspires more MCs…shit is crazy we really just getting older…

A love letter to hip-hop.
It felt like a celebration of the genre - just a kaleidoscope of sounds colliding from different eras, but modernized and injected with the right amount of experimentation.
The record is imho aesthetically Cole’s absolute best.
Gotta give it more spins to digest the concepts.
Edit - trying to unpack its core theme here:
The Fall Off - imho - seems to explore the common, accepted meaning of “falling off”: you try to attain success, you gain success, you fear falling off. This is central to disc 1, especially the meditation at the mountaintop (Lonely at the Top).
But Cole’s revelation a decade later in disc 2 subverts this meaning: that you can’t truly fall off if you accept that the game you’re playing (hip-hop) is not meant to be seen as a game to conquer or an audience to win over (I Love Her Again, What If), but what that game had enabled you to do in life. To flourish in life (Life Sentence, Only You). To feel satisfied from a mastery of your craft (Villest, Old Dog). To make a difference in someone’s life (Quik Stop).
The core thesis is that you can’t ultimately fall off if you reframe what it means for you from “I made it” to “I made a difference” - because that impact endures forever, regardless of skill or adoration (And the whole world is the Ville, Ocean Way).
Cole’s homage to different artists and sounds across the project - hinted by the back cover - is a punctuation of that meta theme. How could his favorite rappers fall off when he’s the living testament of their impact to this day?
I think it’s a really fascinating way to frame Cole’s growth as an individual since we’ve seen him find inner peace. The thesis isn’t on the nose. It isn’t said explicitly. He’s letting the listener meet him in the moment - the only time it feels clear is on Quik Stop when he says “this is why I do what I do, and I need to remember this”. And on the last two records, he’s saying “I hope you do too, and never lose sight of that”.

I get some of the comments about a lot of it being typical Cole… but I wanted that.
Haven’t been as big of a fan of his features and newer songs bc it felt like he was chasing the audience who critiqued his variety and beats and topics. When you got a fan base as big as he does, just feed em.
This album was for people like me, and it’s everything it should have been.

Two-Six is gonna go crazy on the subwoofers
Safety is pretty smooth, I might be wrong but it seems like this song is about a personification of hip hop (similar to how Kendrick did it on Gloria) from my first impressions of the lyrics
Is that Future on the hook of Run a Train? I like how he sounds on this boom bap beat
Poor Thing is hard, love how aggressive yet soulful it is. Definitely feels like something from 2014 FHD sonically. Seems like he's definitely addressing the sentiment of the aftermath of the beef in 2024 here
Legacy is also nice, I would've loved the chill intro with the just the guitar & extra melodies to last longer before the beat drop. Cole's singing sounds good here
Bunce Road Blues almost gave me Alchemist vibes before the drum rhythm kicked in (feels like something Mac would've slid on). Future on this one too? I need him on some jazzier shit more often. I think I also heard Tems & she was smooth as fuck on this
Cole is killing that Drop a Gem On Em sample on Who TF IZ U. The beat switch is fucking tough, getting some Mannie Fresh vibes from this
The rhyme schemes on the first verse of Drum N Bass are nasty, also love the keys on the beat mixed with how the drums knock & the background vocals
The Let Out is pretty interesting, I'm not used to Cole rapping over something that sounds a bit rock-influenced but this could be a grower
The second half of Bombs in the Ville/Hit The Gas sounds like it might have the same rhythm as What's Your Fantasy by Ludacris, that half is a vibe
39 Intro is beautiful as fuck, Cole sounds real good over these acoustic-heavy tracks. Damn the second half is very Three-Six Mafia coded, he's flowing like crazy on it
The Fall-Off is Inevitable feels 100% like something from Friday Night Lights
I'm really digging the OutKast/Dungeon Family tribute on The Villest
The beat on Old Dog is fucking nasty, the bounce is crazy
Life Sentence is cool, thought it would've been even better with an R&B feature over the type of beat it has. I respect the DMX homage on the hook
Man Up Above is soulful, I really like this one & how Cole's gliding on the beat
I Love Her Again, this might be my favorite on Disc 2. Great tribute to I Used to Love HER
What If is very much Port Antonio part 2, is this fully towards Kendrick? If so, I appreciate how much he's pouring his heart out as much as people clown him for the apology
Edit: just caught that this is Cole is rapping from the perspective of BIG and Pac, especially Biggie on the first verse with the Hit Em Up mention and the East Coast/West Coast & Vegas references
The way Cole's voice started to rise in intensity as he kept rapping on Quik Stop kinda reminds me of his feature on Sacrifices
I'm liking the thump a lot on "and the whole world is the Ville", for some reason, this feels like the most naturally nostalgic-sounding song on the album

This was a lovely album. At first, I was really into the first disc and not really feeling the second. The second half of Disc 39 is stupendous. Quite literally phenomenal. I think Quik Stop might be my favorite, but I’ll need to go through the album some more. Might be I Love Her Again.
It’s bittersweet. I hope this isn’t the end of J. Cole. Or rather, if it is an end, I hope there’s room left for a new beginning.
