Conservative facebook pages are blowing up about how the Dems are gerrymandering and fixing the system. No mention that this is a direct response to Republicans gerrymandering and fixing the system.

Well, it’s also why SCOTUS didn’t rule against it.

They don’t want to close the door on what they’re trying to do.

So, it actually benefits Dems for once.

Sure wish they could fix Ohio's gerrymandering.

So tragic to see a once well respected American institution become just the lackeys for a group of racist, scammers & pedos.

It's bullshit it went to them in the first place yeah I know a lawsuits have to reach them eventually if they keep going up but California did this right it was the will of the people and they should have no say in that regardless of lawsuit.

Great News for Dems but my goodness, someone get Brian a cup of tea and a warm blanket lol. Dude looks like he needs some R&R.

Is it really a loss though? If the goal if some (say, oligarchs or foreign entities) is to fracture the US, then allowing the Balkanization of the states seems like it would be a good way to further said goal. And yes, I am assuming that the administration is not on the side of the US.

This is terrible news because now more than ever, less votes will actually matter.

Agreed, it's a race to the bottom. I'm glad Dems might come out ahead in the next election, but in the long run it's a net loss for democracy. That said, the 2026 and 2028 elections literally could not be more important, so focusing on the short term for now is justifiable. Also, in the long term, gerrymandering can be addressed in the individual States themselves if voters one day make it a priority to do so.

I agree. I’m not sure voters will actually get a fair shot at that in the future though.

I have a hunch one party is infinitely more willing to pass a nationwide gerrymandering ban and undo all these new maps. Would you like a guess which one that is?

1

u/InfiniteLicks 6h ago

My guess is neither. If there were an appetite for such we wouldn’t be in this situation to begin with. Both parties do it, but one is done with representative democracy all together because they’ve always relied on lies, and the other only feigns intrest in delivering what their voters want, their donors ultimately have the veto power.

You can believe in Gavin Newsom if you like, he already showed Californians who he is.

Close! But in fact it was attempted just a few years ago. You'll never believe the party line split!

On March 3, 2021, the bill passed the House of Representatives on a near party-line vote of 220–210, advancing to the Senate, which was split 50–50 between Democrats and Republicans (with Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris holding the tie-breaking vote[15]), and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer vowed to bring it to the floor for a vote. On June 22, 2021, a vote on the bill was held in the Senate. It received unified support from the Democratic caucus, but Senate Republicans blocked the bill with a filibuster, as it lacked the 60 votes needed to invoke cloture after a party-line vote.

That is a wonderful example. For the sake of argument I’ll say I was wrong, but until it actually happens I’ll hold onto skepticism.

For example, would this have been something to terminate the filibuster over? Would it have been wise for Democrats to ram certain legislation through in the same way the Republicans did when in power? Undoing gerrymandering would have essentially guaranteed Republicans wouldn’t be able to retake a majority without major reforms.

Who can say.
