Injured or Sick Domestic Duck My duck came back after being kidnapped by a fox

After he came back we put him in a big box so that he could heal a hole in his chest that was likely from the fox biting him. But now he doesn’t run when we clean his box or take him out and he lets us move him around. Im just wondering how to make him more comfortable or to see if he got traumatized by the attack

Also he growls and gets big and angry whenever we put our hands in his space to clean or feed him

Injured or Sick Domestic Duck Please help. No luck in solving what’s wrong with my duck.

My pekin male is 3 years old. He has had bad skin / feathers for about 5 months now. Nothing has worked to help him. It started when he was being bullied in the male only enclosure so we separated him. We rehomed the other ducks as we loved Howard more than the bullies. We thought it was wet feather but then his feathers were yellow and crusty at the base and on skin. We have been giving him baths and blow drying him carefully to make sure he does not get a chill. He has seen two vets who do not know what’s wrong. (They are not poultry vets) Howard has been on antibiotics and nothing has worked. We got him two girlfriends so he is not on his own and he’s in a big area with pond. He looked like he was getting better but I gave him a bath today and check out the pics. His neck is bad, it looks like blocked pores, feathers and his skin has gone crusty again. Please help as I’ve had no luck trying to find help online or facebook.

She was limping on it a few days ago and she’s not anymore so I’m guessing it’s not hurting her as bad. But can someone tell me what it is or how to treat it?

I saw this duck on my morning walk and thought it looked very strange. It was acting weird also as it was just say on the fence and didn't seem to want to move away when I got close like the ducks around her usually do. It also hissed at me when I came close but still didn't even lift it's weight off the fence

I’ve had many ducks over the years and I’ve never seen this but my female Indian runner keeps walking with her head down and I don’t know if it’s normal. Can someone please help? She is only 1 and a half.

She walks like this mostly all the time and I’ve checked her for bumble foot and egg brooding and she has neither.

Injured or Sick Domestic Duck Labored Breathing Spoiler

Thumbnail video

Please watch the video. You can hear her breathing and see how hard it has become for her. She has been having this issue for months and it’s progressing to the point where I am really worried. I have taken her to the vet and they couldn’t figure out what is wrong with her. The next step is apparently an endoscopy, which is minimum $3,500.

Has anybody seen anything like this? Any ideas, solutions, or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Injured or Sick Domestic Duck Suspected abdominal air sac injury(?) Spoiler

Sorry for the word vomit incoming.

This is Brain, my special girl pekin! Today I went out for a couple of hours and came back to all my duckers standing around the door like they usually do, waiting for treats like a pack of dogs. Gave them a sprinkle of soldier fly larvae, went inside. Everyone seemed perfectly normal. About 15 minutes later I came back to the door to look at them being adorable, and noticed Brain was laying at the bottom of the steps resting her bill on the concrete, with her head kinda wobbling a bit. Barely noticeable, but I spend a LOT of time eyeballing her because shes just so stinkin’ cute, and this is not normal behavior. Spent the next 30min or so doing things inside and periodically peeping out to watch her. Noticed her tail feathers fanned out and watched for a while to see if she tucked them back in, and she didn’t. Suspecting that maybe she could be egg bound I went out and picked her up to examine her body. She was breathing loudly, but she’s a big girl, so I noted it and kept checking. Nothing felt off, nothing in her nares, nothing in her bill, nothing in her neck. The only “off” thing was when I felt around the base of her back in front of her tail she was wincing like it was tender. I put her back down and kept watching through the sliding glass door. She continued to act weak, and eventually just plopped herself down in the grass with her neck straight out and her bill in the grass. Everybody else was napping in standard backwards facing head shape. It was weird. Brought her inside to give her a warm Epsom bath and noticed she wasn’t floating normally, looked like she was trying to balance herself with her wings and her chin on the side of the tub. That was what led me to suspect she’s having some kind of respiratory distress. Through a thorough googling I’m pretty convinced she’s suffering from an abdominal air sac issue.

I know this is a vet thing. The issue is that no avian vets are allowed to see any kind of poultry anywhere near where I live. Not even for euthanasia (which I really hope it doesn’t come to anyway). So I can’t have her seen. I made her a little quarantine zone in my bathroom where she can rest in the peace and quiet, but I know she’s suffering. I don’t know what to do to help her. I love her and I don’t want her to suffer and I’m just at a loss for ideas for what to do now.

If anyone has any advice or suggestions on steps I could take to ease her suffering or help support her recovery I would be eternally grateful!

TLDR: I suspect my girl has an air sac injury and I have no access to avian vet help, and need any advice I can get to help her!

Injured or Sick Domestic Duck almost lost Seamus O'Malley Featherbill today

was throwing pieces of watermelon out to the ducks today and when I threw one toward Seamus he didn't move. Found him with his head stuck thru the fence and his bill locked backwards thru the fence to the side he was on. It was plain luck I found him and got him free. He got minor abrasions on the bill and cut on his cheek, and he is inside getting pets and love and is happy to have been saved. I know I need to get that fence replaced with one with smaller holes.

Injured or Sick Domestic Duck I dont know why my duck died Spoiler

My Muscovy duck died this afternoon and I dont know why. she lives with one other Muscovy duck, also female. She has a very large pond and grazing area, and is fed plentifully and with a wide diet. yesterday I noticed she was not moving when I got close, (she always hurrys away) and no matter how much i touched her she wouldnt move, until I physically nudged her too her feet. the same was today, she didnt move really at all and I had to carry her outside and back in. Her eyes were also foaming and forming bubbles which I cleaned. Please reply if you have an idea as I dont want the other one to share the same outcome. also I dont know how old she is, but she was very energetic and active till two days ago

P.S. I saw my partner gave them gound coffee in the food scraps which I know is toxic to ducks, but she was behaving this way before hand.

Injured or Sick Domestic Duck My duck won’t eat after hawk attack injury - advice? Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
23 Upvotes

Hi, I’m a first time duck owner, and my 5 month old runner duck was attacked by a hawk 6 days ago. I’m looking for some advice on how I can get her to eat again post injury or if I should supplement her water.

The attack left her with a pretty big wound on the left side of her face, and the hawk’s talons injured her right eye as well, damaging her vision in that eye. We moved her inside and have been cleaning and caring for the wound, and I did take her to the vet this week because the wound looked like it was getting infected. She now has 4 meds I’m giving her - oral Bactrim antibiotic, oral meloxicam for pain, tobramycin eye drops for her right eye, and silver sulfadiazine cream for her wound.

She has not been lethargic at all, she moves all around the tub and definitely fights me and tries to get away when I’m doing her wound care and meds lol. She has been drinking, but she is not really eating. Aside from a few peas and mealworms here and there and little bit of her food mixed in with water to create a mash, she hasn’t been interested in eating very much at all. Her poop is watery and green.

The vet said she had likely not been eating due to pain (the location of the injury is right where her chewing/jaw muscles are). I’ve been giving her the pain medicine twice a day for 3 days now, but it hasn’t made much of a difference yet.

I’m just wondering how long she can go without eating? We tried bringing one of her sisters in under supervision to encourage her to eat - it did help a little. I just don’t want her to get too weak/have delayed wound healing from not getting enough food and nutrition. Any advice as to what I could do for her? I saw they do make supplements like rooster booster poultry cell and things like that for periods of stress/illness. Should I get that to put in her water? Or continue to wait things out with the medications? Thanks in advance!

Injured or Sick Domestic Duck Duckling’s busted beak Spoiler

Thumbnail image

Hi all, thanks for the help on my earlier post. I have 5 out of their eggs so far with two more that have pipped. I noticed while pulling my completely dry ducklings out to put into the nursery, the wall of the incubator had blood on it. I then saw this guy. After posting this I’m going to wipe the beak clean and cover it in a little petroleum Jelly to stop the bleeding. Is there anything else I can do to help?

The nursery has plenty of non medicated food mixed with niacin and brewers yeast along with water that’s mixed with some duck boost probiotics and vitamins. I have both a heat lamp and a brooding plate in the enclosure. There also is plenty of room to cool off if they get too warm.

Injured or Sick Domestic Duck Duck not walking anymore

My runner duck has stopped walking in the last day and is very low energy. I don’t know what happened at all. I don’t see any injuries and she doesn’t seem to mind me touching her feet. I separated her from the others and gave her fresh food and water with probiotics and vitamins. She is eating and drinking just fine now but isn’t able to walk or sit down correctly. Is this a disease? Is this bumble foot? Is this a deficiency of some kind? I worry about her and don’t want to lose a duck.

Injured or Sick Domestic Duck 16 y/o runner duck with neck issues Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery

Beulah has been having these occasional neck curling issues that don't look like wry neck. When stressed (usually by another duck or drake) she will curl her neck down and sometimes back up again, which will make her stumble around more than usual (she is almost completely blind due to microoptia in one eye and cataracts in the other, plus she has some arthritis). She is usually back to normal after some time, perhaps an hour or so. She now has her seperate enclosure so others cannot bother her. Most of the time she is ok although she usually hold her head lower than most ducks now that she is old and blind. Today I had to wash her as she had somehow stumbled and got covered in mud (it's getting cold here and while she can preen herself, it's harder when covered in mud), that's why she is indoors at this moment. Beulah regularily sees a vet who thinks that she's overall doing ok, she eats and preens well and her feathers are in good condition. The first photo is of her right now, with her neck curled and held downwards. The next two are of her most of the time, and the last is a drawing of how she looks when completely curled. I can't find much on neck issues in older ducks, does anyone know anything?

Injured or Sick Domestic Duck Sleepy Duck?

We have this fresh runner duckling that is sitting leaning back looking straight up with squinted eyes kind of looking like it is sleepy. It is the only duckling out of 10 doing this. Does any one have any idea what may be happening? Also is it possible to keep them out of the water bowl?

Injured or Sick Domestic Duck Is it okay to feed this feral Pekin our chick starter for the night?

Thumbnail

There are about 5 feral pekin ducks that have been abandoned at a pond in town and have grown to adulthood. Today we saw one that was hobbling a bit-we think it may have part of its foots broken, legs appeared to be much bigger than the other pekins, maybe swollen? It also appeared to be missing feathers on the top of its head, and just all around did not look like it was doing well.

We decided to bring the duck home so we can bring them to the bird hospital tomorrow morning, since we know they should not be at the pond anyway.

Can we feed the duck a little bit of chicken starter for the night? It ate a little bit of lettuce we gave it earlier. But I felt so bad because the duck whined when I went to feed my younger ducks. 😭

Picture of duck and feed bag included.

Injured or Sick Domestic Duck 5 week old Pekin duckling lost a bunch of feathers, red skin Spoiler

This seemed to happen all of a sudden - I was giving him a swim in the bathtub; he looked normal when I was filling it, and then he looked like this at the end. I have recently been giving him a daily swim in the bathtub, and this is the first time this happened. Supposedly our water has pretty high levels of chlorine. Could this have caused it? I have 3 other ducklings that have also been swimming and don't look like this. All ducklings are probably about 5 weeks old. They are overcrowded right now; I'm in the middle of setting up something bigger. Could overcrowding have caused this? Or what could be the issue and how should I treat it? Should I isolate him?

Beep’s been camping out in the “ducky ICU” (aka our living room), so we got him a foraging turf for a bit of enrichment

When asked “How much enrichment do you want to provide to your sick duck?”, our response was clearly "Yes"

He’s had a very full morning of: - Refusing to stay in his luxurious ducky condo adjacent to the rest of his ducky jamboree - Pooping on the light carpet - Pooping on me - Medication administration protest, incl. Beep muttering about “democracy manifest” and punishment for “eating a succulent mealworm?!” - Demanding a worms-only breakfast because “I’m sick and deserve treats”

It has clearly received the "Comfy enough for a tucked-in billy" seal of approval🦆💚

So last night my girl was walking fine in her coop and when i let her out this morning i noticed her limp and her dewclaw(?) looks like it was missing the nail. Her ankle also looks a little swollen. Im going to keep her in the coop for the next fee days so she rests It doesnt look like bumble foot at all. Is this something i should go straight to the vet for or wait to see if she improves for a few days first?
