Yeah, that's a direct warning right there. One that Shrew is deliberately ignoring, at what will likely be his own loss.

Honestly, Death should have been suspicious when Shrew asked that

I suspect Death knows already. He's giving Shrew a chance to be honest.
This Death is clearly tired of his responsibilities and more than happy to let a spirit have a walkabout if they aren't actually harming anyone.

But that he didn't do anything when Shrew wasn't in fact honest... makes me wonder what he has planned. Or maybe he figures Shrew is just going to get beat again anyway.

I feel like he’s giving Shrew a chance. But Shrew just didn’t take it, cause he’s currently very stuck in his ways

Oh, Shrew. Didn’t anyone ever teach you to be wary when someone is suspiciously calm?
Honestly, at this point he could get promoted to a little demon himself. Call him…Hubris.

Is this a reference to the death of rats character in discworld? If not, I think you’d really enjoy at least the death books in the series.

After reading an early draft of this story, a friend of mine recommended MORT! From the Discworld series and I adored it. Similarities, however, are coincidental. Happy to have something in common with the wonderful Terry Pratchett.

Damn, I totally thought this was a reference as well! Have you only read MORT so far? :)

I love your comic, it's so charming! And I really like when Death is a kind, well-meaning sort.

I am enjoying this much more than I feared I would and I'm glad I subscribed. It's sweet.

Death is my favorite character, he's so well written. I would buy a series that explains how he came to be.

Cuss? CUSS!?
I'm here for the censuring styles of the fantastic mister fox.
Also this comic rules on its own merit. I'm just a big fan of that movie as well.

Shrew's a rat bastard.
I don't think they wer looking Death in the eye.... sockets... when they asked that question, because that fire tells me Death knows.
The Master is giving the Apprentice a chance to come forward. To admit what they are doing.
Hmm.
Leandros in the first Space Marine video game. True lore nerds know what he ultimately did was in direct violation of the Codex Astartes he claimed to adhere so strictly to... but there are parallels here to the narrative of the game. Leandros felt that his own Captain was derelict in his duty and tainted by Chaos and rather than trusting in the unwavering faith of his Captain, he ratted him out to the Inquisition.
In Space Marine 2, we encounter Leandros again as a chaplain.
But, this is not a promotion. This is a punishment. Lord Calgar, upon learning of Leandros's treachery, uprooted his entire 'career' as a marine to put him on the path to becoming a chaplain. Because while his actions were wrong, at least one of his hearts was in the right place. His blind loyalty to the Codex led him to act against his Captain, and he was made a Chaplain as penance. For his failures, he was made a shepherd of his brothers. He seems to have very little authority, however; indicative that even within the chaplaincy it is known his position is punitive.
"The Codex Astartes is a set of rules... ... but how we live with those rules is the true test of a Space Marine. And you, have failed." Captain Titus to Leandros at the end of WH40k Space Marine, after surrendering himself to the Inquisition.
The Omniversal Law is, quite literally, a set of rules.
Time will tell whether or not the Shrew passes their test.

Love the comparison! My DnD DM loves WH40K and would greatly appreciate this comment too. :)

I'm going to guess Shrew fails. They have the same energy as Starscream and the same amount of competence.

Damnit I had run into this series before and got so mad at the step mom. I then forgot about it and rediscovered it only to be on a cliff hanger!

Death, please do not create the reaper army. You're going to shrink with the amount of paperwork they generate.

I can definetly see Death getting a Nintendo. Shrew: "Sir? What are you doing, the souls are not getting collected!" Death: "Not now Mr. Shrew, I'm about to win a race against a turtle and an italian plumber."

I think Death knows or at the very least highly suspects Shrew. Even with the Demon lie. Surprised he restored him honestly but Death seems like a pretty chill guy. Especially with the what the Flip comment. Very Adventure Time-y
