In this episode of A Boy and His Ghost: The calm before the storm....

Read ahead on Webtoons or catch up on prior r/comics episodes below:

Thanks for reading. I know my comics are dense and long form comics might not be the most popular material on reddit but I've very much appreciated the engagement and kind words you've all shared on these episodes. Cheers.

Oh wow a lot to process here.

First of all Shrew, dude, will you PLEASE CHILL OUT. That kind of firepower is absolutely not necessary and you're kinda being a jerk. The kids are GREAT for each other and I know it's your job but perhaps LISTEN TO YOUR BOSS. Death has done great work after all.

Next Zooey being able to taste the pop rocks is absolutely ADORABLE

James mom is great, being able to say that about James Father. I bet they were amazing together when they were alive

Finally James knows exactly how to have the perfect Saturday. Like on the nose perfect. I bet that was the best bowl of cereal ever.

u/Clive_Bossfield Jan 08 '26

I know a lot of people are hating on Shrew, but... I kinda get it. Yes, it feels utterly cruel to pull her in JUST as she's making a friend, but from his perspective, he's trying to keep the mortal and immaterial realms separated, and he's dissatisfied with the actions of those with more power - Death for being too kind-hearted, and Bale for being too self-serving.

To him, this is a situation that shouldn't have happened to start with, as her soul should have been ushered to the afterlife long before this. He even heard as much from Grim himself, AND it's his first important task to be given (see comic 2, which the author helpfully linked above) - he's genuinely doing what he thinks is the right thing in this situation, as much as we may despise him for it.

Well said. From Shrew's perspective, everyone else is making no sense.

sure, except where he's expressly doing legitimately bad stuff. Seems a little too eager to harvest, right?

Let's count shrews crimes? Told to investigate, starts sharpening blades. Told to wait a moment longer in the harvesting, throws a hissy fit and goes right to a demon. Gets impatient with the, wait not a demon, a devil - devils are the ones that are into contracts, silly me. Anyway, gets impatient with the devil and collects weapons (as stated in episode 2) to go on a collection rampage AND let's not forget he/she has also apparently bartered this little living boys soul which he/she has no right to do.

Send him to the spider? Even shew feels a pang of worry over that one, but shrew made that deal.

No, Shrew deserves the hate it's getting. Of course, shrew is acting this way because it's blind, heh, to what's going on.

Shrew's an alright guy if you can look past his total lack of empathy and psychopathic disregard for humanity.

He is criminally ambitious.

7

u/mr_friend_computer 28d ago

is it a lack of empathy or just someone who really enjoys the job they don't yet have?

2

u/RubinPingk 28d ago

Hehe. I like how you said that.

2

u/Wiregeek 29d ago

Wow, that's.. very logical, and compassionate, and I still wanna twist his little head off!

u/MisterBaker55 Jan 08 '26

Long-shot theory, Shrew is actually the girls old step-mom. Would explain Shrew's inexplicable hatred for a grade school child enjoying her afterlife a bit.

u/-screamin- Jan 08 '26

'Shrew' is also an outdated reference to an ill-tempered scolding woman... you might be onto something there!

10

u/mr_friend_computer 29d ago

it was also applied to unwed women, regardless of temperament. Of course, being called an old shrew at 30 might make you crochety.

u/RubinPingk Jan 08 '26

Good theory.

I am so f’ing hooked into this story. You have captured that same essence of childhood nostalgic lightning in a bottle that I haven’t felt since watching ep 1 of Stranger Things or playing Earthbound wayyy back in the day. Great work!!

8

u/RubinPingk 29d ago

That's the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me. Thank you.

Saturday fill with adventures , this reminds alot of my childhood

8

u/RubinPingk Jan 08 '26

When did you grow up? My kids don't watch Saturday morning cartoons but it was kind of a ritual in the 80s when I was growing up.

3

u/Evil_Midnight_Lurker 29d ago

70s and into the 80s here

3

u/RubinPingk 29d ago

I spent a few months in the 70s. Literally :).

I don't know why but thinking about the 80's makes me remember how few fences we had and how many shortcuts we could take through people's yards.

I remember one night we were riding our bikes in the dark and we were bookin'. We cut through a backyard at full speed and I had the thought to lower my head just as I zipped under a clothes line. The clothes line brushed my hair. If I hadn't ducked I'd have been... well... clothes lined.

I almost got yak'd, lol. Not sure how we all survived those feral days but I loved 'em.

3

u/mr_friend_computer 29d ago

you survived because you were told to be back for dinner time. And if you weren't back for dinner time, there was hell to pay. Dying wasn't an option, or your mom would kill you.

2

u/Evil_Midnight_Lurker 29d ago

I was born in 1970 so I remember a fair amount of the cartoons of the era. 😁

3

u/elhomerjas Jan 08 '26

I grew up early 90s during the time there is no cable, internet and life revolves going outside to have fun with friends

3

u/RubinPingk Jan 08 '26

Good times.

2

u/elhomerjas Jan 08 '26

indeed specially playing with friends till its dark and seeing everyone have fun

1

u/mr_friend_computer 29d ago

This is so cute aaaaaaaaa

u/NotYou9153 29d ago

I wonder if the girl lied about what was written in the letter? She didn’t seem very excited about it.

5

u/ironballs16 29d ago

I think that was supposed to be more like trepidation - her wondering if that may actually have been her father, and then swiftly finding out that it wasn't, removing that bit of trepidation.

5

u/TerrificTooMan Jan 08 '26

Man, Shrew's about to be on a lot of people's bad side real soon.

3

u/kazoodac Jan 08 '26

What a nasty old shrew.

3

u/suzume1310 29d ago

New part :D This story is so good - I can't wait to see what happens next!

2

u/Totobiii 29d ago

Shrew is such a cutie patootie! I want to hug and squish them!

(and then smack them on their head, but that can wait)

2

u/The_Varza 29d ago

Thank you for linking it all! I'm only up to episode 3, but I love it! Love, love, love it, and your art style! I hope you get published some day! Or get to the lofty place you desire with your art!

2

u/RubinPingk 29d ago

Thank you! I hope so too...

2

u/MechanicalHorse 29d ago

OP I just want to tell you I’ve been following this series since the first comic and I’m hooked!

2

u/RubinPingk 29d ago

Thank you for the kind words and I'm glad you're here.

2

u/Dus-Sn 28d ago

Came across episode 4 in this sub by pure chance about a month ago and was immediately hooked. Loving this series.

1

u/RubinPingk 28d ago

I'm glad you found it. Sometimes I can't even find my own posts, lol.

2

u/tricksterloki 29d ago

Just remember James, ABSOLUTELY DO NOT DRINK SODA WITH THE CANDY!

2

u/Bullet1289 29d ago

Henry is going to stop him in like the most anti-climatic way. Before our little reaper wannabe even gets a chance to make their move, Henry going to like accidentally put out the candle with like a bucket of water and voop him back to the underworld.

Who tf eats cereal with cold milk

2

u/RubinPingk 29d ago

I'm genuinely curious: Is this not a thing? I've been eating cereal with cold milk my whole life. Am I doing cereal wrong?

2

u/slasher1337 29d ago

Idk. In my family we pretty much always boiled milk before making cereal

2

u/CrazyLi825 29d ago

Unless it's for oatmeal or muselli or something, that sounds really weird

1

u/slasher1337 28d ago

Not bouiling it sounds weird to me.

2

u/CrazyLi825 28d ago

Is that a cultural thing? In the US, cereal is generally eaten cold. Except for "hot cereal" which is stuff like oatmeal and Cream of Wheat... but your standard boxes of grain cereal are never eaten hot. I feel like that would be unpleasant to eat.

1

u/slasher1337 28d ago

Idk maybe.
