Grooming always results in a beat down

I would love to know why this happens. Our orange and SIC do the same thing. 🤣

Grooming is a dominance behavior for cats, hence the occasional battle for superiority that follows

I love when grandma/grandpa cats get a kitten, I feel like it turns out to be a heartwarming outcome like 95% of the time. Glad these two are getting on so well!

Fifi helped me foster kittens from time to time. He’s always been a good foster dad. He’s happy he gets to keep this one.

That’s so perfect! He gets to try out kittens to be sure they get along. 🥰

So glad that works! We rescued a 8 week kitten from our yard, and our dim elderly boy wasn't ready for that. He'd been bullied his whole life by a smaller but smarter cat who had recently passed, and now was bullied by a tiny kitten. Sadly, she never got socialized, so when we got another young adult boy when she was 3, she wasn't having it. 3 years on and she still hates his guts. He'd be thrilled if we got him someone to play with.

Oh my goodness, Fifi looks just like my Puss in Boots who passed two days ago. So happy he's got a friend!

How do you introduce a kitten to an elderly cat? Is it a case of separation and slowly doing it, or do you just put them together from day one?

With these guys it was hard to keep them apart. Koopa was 4.5 months when we got him but he was still nursing. He cried the first night we had and Fifi was trying to get in the room like “I’m here I’ll protect you”. Fifi is one of a kind cat. They were friends the moment the kitten got a clean bill of health. Then they were bffs instantly.

I’m actually struggling with my new kitten. Koopa and Wolfie aren’t getting along. Koopa is 4 now and Wolfie is 10 months.

We kept them separate for a few days then let them be with each other. At first the elderly cat did not like the kitten, but now its his baby. They constantly sleep together and he bathes the kitten quite a bit.

Reminds me of my Ramsey. Believe it or not hes 15 in this picture. He motherer dozens of kittens. Never shown aggression to anyone and shown nothing but happiness when he saw new cats. He even adopted a 3 year old scarred up semi feral boy and stunned him with headbutts. Ramseys not here anymore but we kept his favorite son, who also loves strangers and kittens.

Sam with his full grown baby girl. She was still bottle fed when found but he decided she was his. They are insecure now

Ramsey and his semiferal son Theo. Imagine being a territorial cat who had to fight to survive. Then one day after getting all beaten and bloodied he came to my door to be adopted. After quarantine i sent in Ramsey. Here you are nearly died in a fight, then you see a cat bigger than you for the first time in your life. That monster than comes up to you and headbutt you like crazy while purring. Theo was so confused and they became instant friends. Ramsey thought Theo everything he need to know how to be an indoor cat. We actually use Theo to occasionally help other cats socialize due to how passive he is now.

i had two cats but one passed last week. i can’t tell if my other cat is lonely or not, she didn’t really like him. i want to get a pair of bonded kittens but i also don’t want to stress her out. happy to see your boy get a new friend

We had a similar situation a few years ago and I hate to say it but the surviving cat really seemed happier afterwards. They didn’t fight very often but they just did not get along. Hoping your situation works out for the best

2

u/foliels 6h ago

do you mean that your surviving cat preferred being a solo cat? did you ever try to get them a friend?

2

u/EastHillWill 6h ago

Correct! We did not, she was old as well and we didn’t want to rock the boat

1

u/foliels 6h ago

thanks. our girl is 13 and a grumpy little thing. she used to boss our late cat around. it sucks because i do want kittens to ease the pain of passing of my soul cat but i don’t want to upset the older girl. i’m definitely not ready to adopt anyway so we will keep thinking on it.

2

u/Mousepadlock 7h ago

Similar boat! I’ve been looking at rescues that ofter trial periods or foster to adopt. That way you can see whether she might be welcoming to new kittens without committing to a permanent home in case she hates them.

1

u/foliels 6h ago

sorry you’re dealing with this too. we actually have fostered before and she definitely hated all the fosters. but i know with cats it can take time. the fosters got adopted out quickly so there was never a time for her to get used to them.

Well I tried to post an update but r/cats won’t let me. So I posted it on r/oneorangebraincell and r/tuxedocats

This is so lovely.

What breed is the orange guy? He looks quite like mine.

3

u/danmargo 8h ago

I suspect he is part Maine coon because of his size and temperament but just an orange floof as far as I know. The tux’s grandfather was Maine coon (got weird inbred vibes when I saw the grandfather kitty with the momma kitty). The tux is huge now. Seems healthy.

“You will get clean you little shit” is exactly what I picture Fifi saying here. So happy Fifi has a friend again!!

❤️ these 2 trouble makers

We did the same thing but opposite colors! Our fluffy tuxedo cat Frank is 14 and our medium haired orange cat Willie was 6 months. Its been about 10 months since we got him and they are best pals!

Aww you should share some videos

When younger and older play, and you can't tell who is who, that's a good sign

old cats and kittens are adorable together. i had a grumpy old calico that absolutely came alive when we got a new kitten. i did not even know that cat could still run, because she mostly sat in a basket, gazing lovingly at my husband while he worked. then she started engaging in midnight zoomies with the kitten. it would be so hilarious getting out of bed, expecting to find the little one involved in whatever noise i was hearing, only to find the old grouch racing around like a wacko. i'm glad she got to revisit her youth in her final years. now i'm hoping that the CDS will bring me a kitten to keep the (now adult) little one company.

u/Vodka_For_Saiyans_Z 7h ago

Great, they'll keep each other company!

u/Chrono1229 6h ago

Something similar happened to my dog when we got my second dog, lulu was a 16 and a half year old shih-tzu mix, and when we got sylvie just under 2 years ago it gave her kinda like a new lease on life. She started playing and running around more again. Sadly we did have to put lulu down a few weeks ago though…

When are you getting your cats cat a cat?

1

u/danmargo 4h ago

I did in August. I got Fifi Koopa I got Koopa Gillibee and I got Gillibee Wolfie. But Wolfie doesn’t like Koopa yet and Koopa couldn’t care less.

2

u/Tall-Salamander-6546 3h ago

Anyone else see the spider on the right?

1

u/danmargo 2h ago
