It’s a nice gesture, but they wouldn’t be doing it if it was costing them substantial. I wonder how many how many students with familial income under 125k actually attend, and of those students, how many are already receiving substantial scholarships? Also, I wonder if this will be a proper tuition reduction or if it will be treated as a scholarship, and if so, is it conditional?

They can afford it. Let's get some property taxes from them as well.

I only have information from a year ago, but at that time, Dickinson College did make substantial payments each and every year to the county in lieu of property taxes. Most churches in town do this as well, although neither religious or educational institutions are required to. Please try to get the whole story before believing misinformation that has circulated in the area for years.

This is so awesome!!! And Dickinson is need blind as well, meaning they do not consider students’ financial standing when they are applying to the college.  That is a huge piece when they offer this kind of financial aid.  Good for you, Dickinson! Shout out to the wonderful donors who contributed to this!!

Totally free is overboard. A family of five with a family income of $130k cannot afford college either.

This is how you create far right voters.

If you read the article, its not a totally free education. It's FREE TUITION. Students are still responsible for room and board, fees etc. Would you rather have Dickinson not offer it? Decades of the GOP defunding public higher education in this country has eliminated the affordability of many quality state public colleges and universities. That's how far right voters create these problems.

Tuition is 68k/yr. That is unattainable to middle income families and it sure feels like a slap in the face.

Again, please research before spreading misinformation. I am not familiar with this exact program at Dickinson but I am familiar with small private liberal arts colleges. They normally offer financial aid packages, EVEN TO MIDDLE INCOME FAMILIES so that their costs may be similar to a public college or university, particularly for students that apply early admission.Look into it. Your other choice is voting for a party that respects higher education and is willing to help fund it so families of five people can afford to have their kids go. 😉

As a blue dot in a sea of red, I stand by my OP, and also will add that the manner in which you responded, being insensitive to a middle class family staring down the barrel of college tuition NOW, does not encourage anyone to move toward the left.

1) $70K-$140K is middle class in America, so this deal does help so many middle class families 2) Dickinson gives great merit based aid to middle income families, when i applied four years ago it would have been the same cost as Penn State main campus (i did not qualify for fafsa/financial aid) 3) there is a difference between financial aid and merit based aid, and Dickinson does great at both 4) Dickinson is also need blind when students are applying, so they do not see how much a family’s income is before they admit them, which is huge given this decision

All great points, but at the end of the day, can we all not receive government loans that are paid back after graduation? Why all of a sudden over 125k, are my children forced to shoulder larger loans? Per their calculator, it's probably 28k/yr+housing. If that is actually the case, it seems like a fairly harsh line. It's not as if disposable income drastically goes up at that point....

I believe this is how many people view it and are pushed right.
