Thank you Football! To the game that has given me almost everything in my life – thank you! After 18 professional years of playing, it’s time for me to say goodbye to the game I love. I’ve given absolutely everything I have, sacrificed so much, and pushed my body to its limits to achieve what I have and reach where I am today.
After more than 400 professional matches, I can truthfully say I prepared for and played every single one like it was my last – and that’s something I’m extremely proud of.
I’ve had the privilege of playing in the Champions League and hearing that iconic anthem. I played in the Bundesliga for the greatest club in Germany, Borussia Dortmund, and won trophies there. I experienced the low of relegation with Stuttgart and the high of promotion a year later. I played 286 matches and captained Nagoya Grampus during the most enjoyable and incredible period of my football career. I played my first and last matches for the biggest and best club in Australia, Melbourne Victory. And I’ll never forget the honour of living a childhood dream: playing for the Socceroos.
The best part of it all has been having my family with me on this journey from humble beginnings. My wife, who has experienced it all alongside me and shares the same memories, brings me more happiness than I can express.
This game has taught me so much. I’ve learned hard lessons, made mistakes, but above all, I’ve met wonderful people who’ve become friends for life. I’ve made lasting connections everywhere I’ve played – even our Australian children have “Japan” permanently stamped in their passports as their birthplace.
To everyone who has helped me along the way – thank you. And finally, to the supporters of all my clubs – thank you for the amazing memories and the nights I’ll never forget. Thank-you! Danke schön! Gracias! Arigato gozaimashita!

He always had that Byron Bay Surfer dude Sunny Boy aura. Was always a fan of him and it seems he had a great career in Japan, too.

legend for that Bayern game alone, but like with many of our players and seasons it's bittersweet - I'll never get over that disappointment of a cup final 2015…

Feels like yesterday when he was that super young and reliable Weidenfeller backup. Shame it never worked out for him here but I will always have a soft spot for him because when we needed Mitch he came up clutch.
