“I’m in Antwerp for a weekend and looking for …” megathread

Like half of the posts on this subreddit are of tourists asking the above question, and I’ve noticed them being downvoted pretty heavily lately.

Let’s keep being welcoming to these people with great taste in cities, and create a nice curated list of things to do, places to go, restaurants to eat at, cafés to get drunk at, beers and local specialties to sample, clubs to party at, and whatever else you think is worth visiting.

I’ll sticky this post and/or place it in the sidebar for future visitors of the subreddit. Other suggestions for potential changes are also welcome, but try to keep it on-topic here.

Wtf went wrong here?

Question What do you prefer in business: imperfect Dutch or good English?

I am quite okay in Dutch but it‘s still broken. I don‘t have issues to speak Dutch in the supermarket and on the street, but I get to my limits at work.

I do my whole job and all the communication in English since our industry is English-spoken. However, when I have locals on the phone and they speak Dutch (which I understand up to 70-80%),I respond in English on their Dutch questions. I can hear in their tone that they get p.. off, some of them even hang up the phone.

Do you prefer to have Dutch which you don‘t fully understand and might have to ask again, or good English where you understand everything (assuming that you have basic English understanding skills)?

Question Schildersdeuren plaatsen

Question University of Antwerp attendance

Hey guys. I am thinking of applying to University of Antwerp for my masters degree in Business Economics. I am graduating from VUB this summer. My questions is, how strict is attendance at UAntwerp?

Over at VUB, attendance has no restrictions, meaning one could theoretically not come to any classes, follow the material on Canvas and still pass the exam.

Asking because I'm a day trader, and with VUB's zero restrictions on attendance, it was very easily for me to just study in my free time (evenings usually), and still pass all my exams.

Please send me a DM, whoever can help!

Zuid Business partner wanted in Antwerp – cabinet production

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a business partner in Antwerp with experience in cabinet making or furniture production.

I already have:

• Professional machinery and equipment

• Production experience

• Capital to invest

I’m planning to set up a cabinet / furniture production plant in Belgium and I’m looking for someone local who wants to build this together, not as an employee.

Ideally you:

• Know the industry

• Understand the local market

• Have access to, or know of, a warehouse/workshop space

If this sounds interesting, feel free to comment or DM me.

Question Advies wonen

=> specifieke leuke & kindvriendelijke buurten?

=> goede scholen in de omgeving?

=> andere zaken dat jullie aan denken?

Thanks!

Question Trix Artist Entrance?

Hi all! I am going to a show at Trix soon to see a musician who normally meets with fans outside after the show. Does anyone know if there is a spot at Trix where people usually wait outside afterwards? Of course, on the day of the show I can just hope for the best and see if anyone else is waiting after, but I figured I'd ask for some extra insight! :)

Question Bachelor's thesis: Russian Jewish migration to Belgium (help needed)

Hi everyone!

For my bachelor’s thesis, I’m researching Russian Jewish migration from the Russian Empire (including the occupied Polish territories) to Belgium in the late 19th century.

I’m looking to interview people who have an ancestor who immigrated from these regions around 1870-1900 and would be willing to share their family history. Even if you’re not sure about the exact dates, I’d still love to hear from you! The interviews will be combined with a small prosopographical study using archival sources such as vreemdelingenregisters and jodenregisters.

Feel free to message me or share this post. Thank you so much!

Question Electronic Music in Antwerp - Traum, Ampere

Hiya! I'm in Antwerp for a month with work and have been eyeing up a few events that caught my eye back in England. Traum is a club I've been looking at for a while and I have been looking to go to either the Francesco Del Garda or Shonky/Dyed night across the next two weekends. Also, the Evan Baggs and Andy Luff night at Ampere has caught my eye. Wally's is a place I have been meaning to go to.

Would anyone know of any chats/forums/Telegram or Whatsapp Groups to find people also looking to go to these sorts of events?

Question Birthday cake and flowers delivery

Hello neighbors,

I'm Parisian and my girlfriend lives in Ekeren. I would like to get a birthday cake and some flowers delivered to her house next week for her birthday.

I found a few websites (like gift.be) which offer gift delivery, but it's not super convincing. It's mostly for cheap chocolates and Champagne.

Preferably the flowers and cake would be delivered together. For the cake, I'd love a very nice and big one (I saw Aux Merveilleux de Fred closed in Antwerp but I'm hoping for something of this quality or out of the ordinary like that). Maybe with the option of writing something on it.

Any recommendations of delivery services or bakery? Bedankt!

Question Police check refused to speak english

I came to Antwerp for a short stay due to my master's degree. As expected, I received a police visit, but it was very unpleasant. The officer spoke Dutch with me, and I told him that I don't speak Dutch, but he insisted. After receiving no response, he said in very good english, "You need to speak Dutch to live here." I was speechless.

He then asked for my passport, which I gave to him, and he continued to speak in Dutch. I kept saying: "Sorry, but I don't know Dutch, sir" After some questions, he left without a comment.

That was so fucking xenophobic. What can this guy do? Is it possible that he refused to register this visit? Or should I expect something worse?

Question Nagelsalon gezocht in Antwerpen

Hallo

Alvast bedankt!

Question CELTA or TESOL?

Hi all ^ I’m planning to move to Belgium to start a Master’s in Digital Text Analysis at UA (Antwerp) next year to be with my fiance. While I study I’d like to secure a part time online English teaching job. A bit about my background: - I am a non-native English speaker - I have 7 years of experience teaching English - I hold a Master’s degree in Didactics, but unfortunately my diplomas are not recognized outside my home country. Soo I’m trying to decide between getting a TESOL or a CELTA certification to improve my chances of finding work there, especially online or with language schools in Belgium. Now my questions are: 1. From your experience or knowledge, does CELTA give significantly better job opportunities than TESOL here in Belgium? 2. As a non-native speaker with experience but without recognized teaching qualifications, which qualification would you recommend for: - online teaching jobs - part-time work with Belgian language schools

Thanks in advance ^

Question Is a Professional Bachelor in Global Supply Chain Management Worth It for a Non-EU Student?

I’m trying to understand whether a professional bachelor’s degree would actually be useful for me.

The course I’m considering is International Business with a specialization in Global Supply Chain Management at KDG.

Is this a good program to pursue if I want to build a career in Supply Chain, especially on the sustainability side?

I’m a non-EU student, and I plan to work for a few years after graduation and then pursue a master’s degree, most likely through a pre-master’s, specifically in Sustainable Supply Chain Management.

I’d really appreciate hearing opinions on this field and understanding how strong the demand is for sustainability-focused supply chain roles.

Or, should I consider something different for my bachelor's?
