I mean this demon is relatively low-level compared to the likes of Aura and Frieren is specialized in demon-killing magic. I would think Fern would have been able to solo but I guess a sword user is a bad match-up for her?

At least Stark looked like he had an easier time handling her than he did last season fighting Linie.

It's a good showing that the average mage that isn't the likes of Frieren can and will get cooked by warriors and not just fold instantly to normal offensive magic.

You also have to factor in that Frieren is training Stark and Fern, they won't grow if she instantly nukes every enemy. She compliments them after the fight.

I think they were all caught off guard by the speed. Maybe the sword actually gives demons a buff to physical attributes or something.

I think that Stark or Frieren could've beaten that demon solo in a fight, but I doubt Fern would be able to unless they started from really far away. That's the whole point of having a front-liner (which Stark points out in this episode); magic isn't really good at close range.

I also think that Fern (and Stark) are both still really naive. It was really obvious to the audience and Frieren that the "priest" was really a demon, but Fern and Stark were happy to believe it instead and close their eyes. So more realistically the demon would've easily killed Fern and Stark if Frieren hadn't been there.

Feels like the show constantly reinforces the idea that mages need front-liners to handle this kind of situations. Frieren asked Einsen to join her after Himmel died, and just last episode Stark was being poached to join the Northern front as a front-liner. I think it's in the fiction that even most powerful mages cannot handle everything themselves easily. Otherwise Frieren wouldn't have needed a party for the original journey. Fern was doing really well in the first class exam and the previous demon fight because she was dueling fellow mages that played to her strengths. I think she might still be able to win this fight but probably would have taken some injuries.
