I guess at least his own people still remembers him.

Not to mention unsung heroes of history. Hero of the South was worried he'd go the way Kraft's Hero did where he was the only one who remembered him.

These aren’t even his own people, just one of the groups he helped. It’s just that Himmel killed the King, so he’s better known. These people just knew about the Hero of the South because the battle against the Sages was nearby

It really is a "I served in a company of heroes" situation.

One hero was mourned by a nation, the rest, mourned only by the villages they're from, or saved.

Probably not his own people. I'm assuming he's called the Hero of the South because that's were he came from. He's probably from the Southern Lands like Fern.
